22.01.2022 Over the past 18 months, the town of Corowa (just outside of Albury, NSW) has been gripped by suicide. Jaimes Walch, a Corowa local and counsellor has been a man on a mission in trying to combat the epidemic. So, its no surprise that when a theatre production about suicide titled "Marooned" (and based on a true story) first hit the Southbank Theatre in Melbourne, that Jaimes lobbied the Council and local Health Services to bring the play to Corowa. He was successful. . Maroo...ned will be performed in Corowa over two nights only - tonight and tomorrow night - and I'm delighted to be able to make the journey down there to see it. 18.01.2022 I have a heavy heart this morning. Federal Circuit Court Judge His Honour Guy Andrew has passed away. Whatever has been said of His Honour in the media over the last few months is not a true reflection of who this gentleman really was. By all reports from friends and colleagues of mine in Brisbane who appeared before His Honour, he was a kind and compassionate man who was the first person to step up and assist in mentoring junior court staff and members of the profession. He... was the same as the rest of us, the lawyers, the Dads and Mums, the children - everyone - who are really trying our best to work with the cards we've been dealt in this system. Am I shocked? No. Am I sad? Hell yes. His Honours passing is reflective of the extraordinary pressure and mental toll faced by those who practice in this jurisdiction, and of the emotional toll faced by all that inevitably live through it as involved parties. 02.01.2022 Urgent applications to the Family Court have surged by almost 40 per cent since the coronavirus pandemic hit, as families crumble under the pressures of social isolation, financial stress and family abuse... Faced with unprecedented pressures on families and demands on the courts, Chief Justice Alstergren will on Wednesday launch a new COVID-19 list, which he will oversee, to hear cases that have been generated or aggravated by the crisis. Urgent cases will be "triaged" by ...a registrar and heard by a judge within 72 hours. . . . Ultimately, we wouldn't need a COVID-19 List if separated parents used some old fashioned common sense and a bit of communication. If changeover cannot be facilitated at the usual venue (like school, for example), then pick somewhere else. It doesn't matter where. Concerned about travel restrictions? Travelling across borders is permitted for the purposes of changeover, whether you like it or not. Concerned about the other parent not practicing social distancing as much as you'd like? Well, I'm sorry - but that won't cut the mustard either. Parenting arrangements must be complied with. Lawyers and those associated with the facilitation of the law and justice in the family law courts are absolutely exhausted. We cannot fix everything within the time you'd like.
