23.01.2022 This is where it all began All the way back in 1984 (the year I turned 11 eek). My flamenco journey started with my family - my Nana saw an interview on TV with a woman who was starting the first Spanish Dance school here in Perth, and she arranged for my cousins and I to go for lessons. We all took lessons together for a year, and in these pictures, we would have done a little show together at the end of the year for my grandparents, aunties and uncles. The setting i...s the patio out the back of Nana’s house, around the fountain, very Spanish style as you can see! One of my favourite parts of performing has always been the curtsy at the end (à la third photo above) and not just because it’s over . I love the grand gesture, the overall feeling and the chance to smile and connect with the audience. One of the greatest joys flamenco has given me is dancing for, and with, my family. While only my sister continued classes with me after this first year, a few of my much younger cousins have also learnt flamenco. The highlight of the year for me was always putting on a show with them at the annual family Christmas Eve party. And I know it was a highlight of my Nana’s year too to see her grandchildren dancing flamenco, which is something she missed very much after moving away from Spain. I am so thankful that today we have the internet, YouTube and all of these other platforms which bring us instant access to everyone around the world. We can now indulge in as much flamenco as we want, watch the latest tablao shows in Spain, check out the flamenco festivals and shop all the latest flamenco fashions. It’s a dream! #flamencojourney #flamencoesmivida #theflamencocoach #beginnerflamenco #vivaespaña See more

10.01.2022 These tips are totally guaranteed to get you dancing flamenco better, faster . . . PRACTICE SLOWLY. No one goes from zero to hero in a minute..... I have heard this advice from a few different professional flamenco dancers, even the ones with the most fanciest of footwork. And this is how they get there. Start slowly, get the muscle memory, and focus on the movement patterns that you want to achieve. It doesn’t hurt to look in the mirror too, just to check you look how you think you look. Then you can work on the speed.. ELBOWS ON TOP. Always!!! If you want to achieve the 'flamenco look', this is key. Whenever you are moving your arms, keep the elbows on top. Say no more. This is just how it is Listen to A LOT of flamenco. A LOT!!! Again, this is advice I've heard from a lot of different professional dancers. And it works. When you're listening to flamenco for the pure enjoyment factor, you really do get the music and rhythms into your body and mind. This all helps when you're learning to dance. I use these tips on a daily basis they help you no matter what level of flamenco you are at. I hope they help you too If you’re new to flamenco and wondering what music to listen to, I have made a Spotify playlist just for you with a few of my favourites I like to listen to in the car, around the house, and in my home office. Copy and paste the link below to your browser to open the playlist. Enjoy! https://open.spotify.com/playlist/0iJ5qw0fTFuX6brsDXv6wN See more
