25.01.2022 For anyone wanting to escape to Spring in Paris right now... (I'm thinking of my fellow Melburnians!) Images from Paris in Bloom - a beautiful book created by @georgiannalane to sweep readers away on a beautiful, flower-filled tour of the city’s dreamiest floral locations, and to provide practical knowledge of Parisian flora, enabling them to recognize with accuracy many of the different blooming flowers encountered along the way. https://theflowerpress.com.au//paris-and-flowers-another-/
20.01.2022 Ah travel, remember that euphoric feeling of exploring a completely different part of the world, having your mind blown by sights and smells and incredible experiences. I’m not sure what my life would look like without travel.. I met my husband (Patrick) travelling, became fiercely independent and resilient from solo travel and learnt some hard truths about the world This pic was taken back in 2009 in Hanoi, Vietnam when Patrick and I lived there for a year. ... While it’s a lovely image of flowers on a bike and an otherwise an interesting capture of life in Vietnam, I am all too aware that in most cases the conditions of those selling flowers on their bikes in Vietnam are far from fair and in some cases are slave labour. While living in Vietnam I volunteered some time with Blue Dragon Children’s Foundation who work to free young people from slavery, rescue them from trafficking situations and help street kids back to school and have opportunities to break out of the poverty cycle. @bluedragonchildren I am proud to now sit on the Board of this incredible organisation, and this week I am supposed to be walking a marathon to raise funds for them. However, I have a sprained ankle so have passed the baton to Patrick (and a team of mates) who will walk the marathon length on my behalf. I know 2020 has been hard on everyone, but for some it's exacerbated an already awful situation. And for organisations doing critical work like Blue Dragon, donations and funding are even harder to find. If you have a little change to spare, please help us help Blue Dragon. Thank you

14.01.2022 Dried flowers. They’ve come back in a big way. I chatted to author of Everlastings, Bex Partridge of @botanical_tales about this comeback, her favorites for drying and the importance of distinguishing naturally dried and chemically altered and dyed flowers. Article in link
13.01.2022 "I think there are a number of factors at play here with the resurgence in people's interest and acceptance of dried flowers." Just posted a Q and A with Bex Partridge, author of Everlastings, a beautiful book on dried flowers released earlier this year. Bex talks us through her thoughts on the comeback of dried flowers, her favourites to work with and the need for distinction between real dried flowers and chemically altered botanicals.... Stay tuned for a GIVEAWAY of this stunning book later this week. Image: Copyright photography Laura Edwards 2020 from Everlastings by Bex Partridge published by Hardie Grant. See more
12.01.2022 As the shackles on Melbourne are lifted, yet other parts of the world lockdown again, I just wanted to share a bit of a project that kept us happily distracted these last few months. I wasn't going to share this at first because I'm not sure if my ambitious plan will work but, as with most things, it's not always about the end result.. So in the depth of Melbourne's lockdown Winter, with kids at home, holidays cancelled and a vibe of uncertainty, I hit the seed catalogues pre...tty hard. You'd be right to question was I starting a flower farm. The thing is, we in inner-Melbourne, and don’t have access to the ground, much less a farm. So the kids and I gave ourselves a challenge to grow as many cut flowers as possible in containers from seed. We've used old baskets, planters and a few new pots. The aim - to have loads of flowers for picking, for the house, as well as a balcony teeming with life and colour to share with urban pollinators. There's many reasons we took on this project and while I'm looking forward to the flowers, the journey thus far has already ticked so many boxes. I’ve just published a post about what we're growing and how this project got us through lockdown - in the link. What has got you through this time? Or indeed what are you hoping will get you through if you've just gone back into lockdown? Take care x https://theflowerpress.com.au//growing-flowers-in-small-s/

04.01.2022 Flower consumers have a right to know where their flowers come from - just like fruit and veg. This is a petition to make ‘country of origin’ labelling mandatory. The issues with Imported flowers are many and varied. For a start there is the risk to our biosecurity, they have much higher travel miles, refrigeration, packaging and then there is the use of pesticides or sprays for longevity and devitalisation at the destination (depending on the country). There are also many social justice issues around flower farm workers not being paid a living wage and being exposed to poor working conditions. Dr Lucy Nairn has set up this petition and expands on these issues the link. Please sign and share. x
04.01.2022 If you’re still looking for a present or a holiday treat for yourself, this is a very special kind of garden book. The Garden State, By Richard Allen and Photography by Kimbal Baker is a coffee-table book of grand proportions exploring garden design, planting and history in almost equal measure.... With vivid storytelling, Allen has highlighted the fascinating history of some of Victoria’s oldest and interesting private gardens. From Cranford and Mernda Heights in the Dandenongs to Noorilim in Nagambie. Glenrannoch, Bolobek and Dreamthorpe in Mt Macedon to the Native Garden by the Myers in Dunkeld, you’ll get lost in the history and stories behind these properties and gardens. So many favourites but being from the Western district Victoria, absolutely loved reading about Mawallock in Stockyard Hill and the Native Garden in Dunkeld. My kind of holiday reading. More info in the link ‘New Garden Books’ Enjoy, Ann x @thamesandhudsonau @littletwigflowers
