22.01.2022 Daydreaming . Hanging around

21.01.2022 In the beginning it seems impossible and you often feel like a complete beginner, even stupid. When you get back to the beginning - to what Id call nothing going on . Its like finding neutral and out of that everything can arise. Neutral with your horse takes respect , time and a real path of communication. They are already and always there. We just have to catch up

21.01.2022 What Kind of Orange is your Horse? "Horses want to please us and if a horse refuses to work for us, we have to consider that he may be in pain, does not underst...and what is asked of him, or is physically not able to deliver. I have ridden thousands of horses, and I can count on the fingers of one hand the times I met a horse who truly did not want to work because of his character. I can count many times over the horses who I found to be in pain or sore, were confused... " In the past, we have talked on this page about how "Touch Means You are Not Alone" and what touch communicates to our horses, how it can soothe, calm, reassure, encourage, welcome, shelter but also reward, vitalize and above all else bond and connect us together. By the same token, when you touch your horse carefully and pay attention to how the muscles feel under your hand: soft, knotty, hot, cold, dry, jelly or wood like, you get all kinds of clues about how his body and mind feels. Does your horse flinch? pin his ears, turn to look at you with curiosity, lean into or away from you? Does his eye soften, dulls or winces? Does his breath catch or deepen? Does he refuse the bit and move away from the saddle? Dances around the mounting block even after years of training? Do you enjoy touching him? or are you wary and worried you are about to be bitten or kicked. Are there parts of your horse that are routinely not easy for you to touch? His poll for example or girth area? Is there a leg he wont give you? Does his back drop sharply to his ribs or is it lined with plump long and round muscles? Does he let you lift and move his tail around or clamps it down sharply? What does his body tell you when you look at his reactions NOT as disobedience but as an expression of wellbeing or discomfort? What does how much or little he/she allows you to handle him/her mean? A few minutes spent looking at and touching your horse mindfully is an invaluable tool for catching restrictions or soreness before they develop into something bigger or into a fight under saddle. It is a performance optimizer besides being kind. " A well horses flesh looks and feel like a round and full orange with fresh pulp bursting with juice and energy. It is plump and elastic and it has a shine that comes from within, a healthy glow. If a horses body looks and feel like an old orange, greyed and shrunk by dehydration and time, the juice long evaporated, leaving behind dried up fiber, the muscles are no longer getting good blood flow, oxygen and energy. These muscles wont work very well, they will tire and tear more easily, and when you touch them, they will be lackluster, dull, dry, flatish or hard and the horse will avoid being touched or stand stoically, waiting for the hand to move away. Sometimes an orange still looks normal on the outside but the juice is gone, as is the taste and pleasure..sometimes a horse can still look pretty, but the body is no longer healthy" "...The more I work with horses the more I learn that muscles and bones do not lie and neither does the horse. .." PS: This handsome horse belongs to Robin and Stefan who have done a phenomenal job of bringing him back into wellness and trust. manolomendez 2013

18.01.2022 Watch the Video Below! Shoulder relief, freedom of movement and straightness.. Learn the acupressure point in the video clip below and help your horse! Dr. Ridg...ways lung 1 + is a really important acupuncture/acupressure wellness point which releases and resolves pain in the shoulder and barrel. It is a very good point to stimulate and incorporate in any horses training routine as it promotes muscle comfort and shoulder freedom before even getting in the saddle-- thus helping the rider develop the horses straightness without stress. This educational video clip demonstrates how to find the point in detail: https://vimeo.com/ondemand/improvedhorseperformance click on the screen to watch the trailer. 11.01.2022 What The Topline Says About Horse and Rider. ( a FREE, seven-page, amply illustrated downloadable article on what your horses body can reveal about his trainin...g and wellness). "....With every new horse I meet, I spend the time to observe its body while it is standing and while it is moving. Just by looking at it, I can already learn a lot about how it feels inside as an individual, how it will move, and the reasons why it will not be able to bend well or extend or collect. Its muscles patterns, how it stands, and how it organizes its posture and balance will give me the keys to how I must work with him/her.... In the following paragraphs, I will list some of the things I look at, and explain what I look for and what I consider good and what is not. I will review the horses topline and underline. By topline, I mean all the muscles and skeleton parts that are above the spine - and include the hamstrings and the abdominal wall muscles because in my way of seeing the horse, the topline is one long chain of muscles woven into one another that starts right behind the ear of the horse and travels down its neck, over its withers, back and croup, and down to the point of its hocks. I include the underline because it is impossible to look at how the topline functions without also looking at the base of the neck, the muscles that go from the head to the shoulder, the chest and pectoral muscles, the abdominal muscles, and the psoas muscles. You see, a horse really is a whole and even for this article, looking at it in parts is proving impossible..." extract from "What The Topline Says About Horse and Rider" published last in Equine Naturally. A thing that won’t cast judgment when you mess up in life. Because you will often, it’s just part of growing up and becoming a decent human." "You’ll need something whose impressive physical presence must be respected at all times. A being who could break your bones in a whisper but will never break your heart. A creature who will be there for you when you cry for hours after someone you love lets you down. 04.01.2022 SUPPLING:What to do when your horse is stiffer in one direction then the other? For Manolo, suppling is not achieved by asking the horse for more bend on his st...iff side then his soft side while riding or working in-hand -- and making him work in smaller circles and figures to "make" his stiff side "give", release and lengthen. He believes this approach creates muscle fatigue and mental resistance, stiffness and physical issues. Instead, he likes to make the work as simple and easy for the horse has possible. While training, Manolo does ride circles, serpentines, loops etc.. in both directions however... he does not ask his horses to work to their stiff side as they do to their easier side and with the same degree of difficulty. His experience tells him that when we ask the horse for a smaller circle then he can physically perform with ease, the horse feels uncomfortable or over faced and we build more resistance and stiffness rather than strength and suppleness. By taking time and adapting the circle sizes to what the horse can do on his stiffer side without over taxing himself, by riding each figure softly and beautifully, we begin to release and supple the horses stiff size - it is basic gymnasticizing. The muscles elasticity and ability to stretch cannot be forced, it must be developed slowly and carefully. When we are not fighting with the horse or forcing him into a posture that is uncomfortable, his confidence in the rider grows, he feels safe and knows he wont be over faced and uncomfortable and so he offers less and and less resistance. With less tension, it is easier to eliminate stiffness. Over time, we can test the improved pliability of the horses muscles and ask for one smaller circle here and there. We can vary the size of the circles and figures on the stiffer side and add more as long as the horse remains soft and comfortable. Here, Manolo is working on a 12 meter circle left and looking for an even bend through Clints body. He is always looking for healthy spinal alignment, for fluidity and to eliminate restrictions and tensions in the body. Note how the horses body is longer on the outside of the bend and how Manolo positioned his body so his outside rein is not blocking Clints ability to bend. Not blocking the horse is a huge key to being able to develop an even horse. A great big thank you to Debranne Pattillo, owner of Equinology.com for coming to visit and doing such a meticulous job.
