08.01.2022 Troopers Cottage Along the York Heritage Trail, the Trooper’s Cottage forms part of the original Courthouse Complex on Avon Terrace. Up until the 1850...s, the complex consisted of the barracks, the gaol, the commissariat store, stables, original courthouse, surveyors cottage/office and quarters and a horse paddock, with the Trooper’s cottage added along with stables in 1865. The cottage served as the home of the trooper responsible for the York gaol and consisted of two stone rooms located in the stable yards along the riverside of the cells. Falling into disrepair over it’s continued use throughout the decades, The Trooper’s cottage was in poor condition, with damage to the roof and walls, and no ceilings, sashes or doors left! Thankfully, the entire Courthouse complex including the Trooper’s Cottage was acquired by the National Trust of Australia (WA) in 1983, and extensive restoration of the cottage was conducted by the trust the year after as part of their program to restore the Old Gaol and complex. The cottage remains open to visitors each week and is a great place to soak up the town's heritage! 07.01.2022 What a year 2020 has been - unlike any other! Some of us have been separated from our families, others have felt safest only whilst at home. ... It has been a year for change, for transition, and for development. This year, York has been overwhelmed with love and kindness from both our WA community and visitors. In a typical calendar year, York is visited by approximately 45,600 visitors with approximately 40% of these international or interstate travellers. This year, with reduced international and interstate tourism, York still welcomed 37,728 visitors to experience its heritage charm. All visitors to our beautiful town have kept our small businesses alive and thriving. Of course, 2020 wouldn’t have been the year it has been without our devoted locals. Those who chose to shop local, stay home, and be considerate of social distancing. To all, we thank you and wish you the happiest of New Years. May 2021 be a year to remember (for all the RIGHT reasons) and one for continued change, acceptance and experience. #YorkWA #ExperienceYork #VisitYork #ShireOfYork #YorkWesternAustralia #Wheatbelt #WheatbeltBusiness #WheatbeltWeekends #WheatbeltWay #PathwaysToWaveRock #WheatbeltLocal #CountryTown #WARoadTrip #VisitWA #WheatbeltWay #OZScapers #OutbackWA #UrbanListPerth #SeePerth #GoldenOutback #AdventureAwaitsWA #VisitWesternAustralia See more
