It’s a fair concern as supplements can seem like quite an investment, but you want to have confidence that you’re not flushing your money down the toilet right (pun intended ). The key is to make sure that the nutrients in your supplements are ACTUALLY being absorbed into your body. ... Therefore there’s a few considerations. Not all supplements are created equal. Bioavailability, quality, dosage, nutrient form all determine if a supplement will actually make the difference it claims to. 1 Ingredient form and bioavailability The same nutrient can come in a range of different forms and some of those are more absorbable than others. New research has come out regarding coffee in pregnancy... and sadly it suggests that ‘there is no safe level of consumption' and therefore pregnant woman should avoid coffee altogether. Before you all freak out this study is still under scrutiny as risk concludes a 'significant associations' and not a direct link. However there are significant concerns. Pharmacologically, caffeine and its metabolites readily cross the placenta. Unfortunately babies are unable to break down these compounds until approx 4 months of age. Current Australian Guidelines indicate pregnant or breastfeeding women can consume up to 200 mg of caffeine per day, or roughly two cups of moderate-strength coffee. The study suggests cutting out caffeine may help to avoid miscarriage, low birth weight, stillbirth and childhood overweight and obesity, this paper advises. If you or someone you know is pregnant / thinking of becoming pregnant know the risks, don't push your caffeine consumption and make an informed decision.
