15.01.2022 The Importance of Gut Health and Probiotics As Hippocrates once said, All disease begins in the gut. 13.01.2022 FUN FACT FRI-YAY!! Zinc - A Simple Treatment for PMS In a recent randomised controlled trial, zinc supplementation significantly improved moderate to severe premenstrual syndrome (PMS) symptoms.... This prospective trial used a screening tool and questionnaire to analyse the symptoms of 142 women, aged 20-35 years, with PMS. The treatment group took 50mg elemental zinc (in sulfate form) from day 16 of their menstrual cycle to the second day of their next cycle, for three months. The prevalence of PMS significantly decreased to 9.5% in the first month, 6% in the second month and 2.6% in the third month. The control group rates remained around 13-14% for the trial period. Additionally, health-related quality of life scores were significantly improved with the zinc supplementation. FX Medicine Spring 2017 Vol 87

12.01.2022 FUN FACT FRI-YAY Probiotic Use in Early Infancy Linked with Reduced Risk of Neuropsychiatric Disorders In the last decade, there has been a growing body of evidence that emphasises the relationship between the bacteria in the digestive tract and the central nervous system. In a recent study published in Paediatric Research, the findings indicate there may be positive correlation between the use of probiotics (LGG 10 bill CFU/day) and a reduced risk of developing neuropsychiat...ric disorders later in childhood. The study suggests that oral supplementation during early infancy with Lactobacillus rhamnosus (LGG) may actually counterbalance the risk of diagnoses such as ADHD and/or Aspergers being received up to 13 years later. It has also been shown to stabilise the gut permeability barrier by effects on tight junctions mucin production and antigen-specific immunoglobulin A production. Another recent study has demonstrated that Lactobacillus rhamnosus regulates emotional behaviour and the central GABAergic system, which is associated with neuropsychiatric disorders. Further studies are warranted to further explore this link however LGG does have a strong and long safety profile and is well tolerated by infants. Pärtty A et al. A possible link between early probiotic intervention and the risk of neuropsychiatric disorders later in childhood: a randomised trial. Pediatr Res. 2015 Jun;77(6):823-8.

11.01.2022 RECIPE: Zucchini Pesto Pasta Ingredients: cup almonds 1 cup edamame, boiled and shelled... 4 cloves garlic 1 cup basil, tightly packed cup olive oil 2 tbsp lemon juice salt, to taste 2 zucchini (for one person) Method: Boil the edamame beans (I use frozen) and shell them (when they are shelled, they should measure to 1 cup). Place all ingredients into a food processor and blend until it forms a paste. Using a spiralizer, form the zucchini into noodles and then boil for about 3 minutes until slightly cooked. I prefer when the noodles are still on the hard side. Remove from heat and drain. Mix the paste, as much as desired, with the noodles and top with slightly boiled cherry tomatoes and nutritional yeast flakes for the added protein and B12.

09.01.2022 Exercise, A Natural Anti-Depressant We all know that an inactive lifestyle contributes largely to a plethora of chronic diseases such as obesity, diabetes, hea...rt disease, osteoporosis and more. We also know the importance of exercise when it comes to weight loss. But how often do we consider the contribution of physical exercise to our mental health? It is not new information that a single bout of exercise can lift the blues and improve mood. It can take as little as ten minutes and even is helpful for people suffering from major depression. Studies have in fact shown that exercise is comparable to antidepressant medication for relieving depression!
