25.01.2022 Plant Tips for U N D E R W A T E R E R S For any of my customers who are new to plants, and maybe a bit of an underwaterer I always suggest buying a plant that gives you obvious visual clues to help remind you to check and water your plants. One of these visual clues plants is the Peace Lily (Spathiphyllum). It is very dramatic when it hasnt been watered but springs right back after a good drink. This time lapse is about 2 hours. With so many plants in my house and a v...ery busy schedule, I have this Peace Lily in my bedroom as a reminder of when the plants in this room are due for a drink. 24.01.2022 When foliage is as dramatic as Ficus Ruby keep it simple and let those leaves pop. Thanks for the photo @smeghan_ 300mm Ficus Ruby in stock -> Ficus Ruby Care:... Choose a bright position for any member of the Ficus Family. No strong direct sunlight for specimens grown for indoor lighting conditions, although a little morning sun or dappled sun is ok. Ficus only like to be watered when theyve dried out between drinks, so always check the top inch of potting mix before you water to make sure its dry. When you do water though, make sure its a thorough soaking, so the whole root ball gets wet. If youre putting it inside another pot or in a basket with a saucer in the bottom to catch the drips, there are two suggestions I have: 1) take the plant out to water thoroughly, let it drain and drip-dry before putting it back. 2) sit your plant on a few pebbles so it keeps your plant up out of the water -just make sure you empty your tray/pot of any water that builds up. 23.01.2022 5 more sleeps until Spring has finally sprung!! Ugh it feels like weve been waiting forever this year!! These are my 5 top tips of things to do for your plants as the weather starts to warm up! 1. Prune, trim & tidy. Now is a good time to cut back any spindly, damaged, old or dying leaves/stems etc. Clean up your plants so all the energy and nutrients can go into producing new growth. 2. Repotting. Have you been holding off repotting through winter? Now is a good time to st...art gathering what you need and research your plant. Some plants only like the next pot size up and some love to spread out and grow! Use the right potting mix and a good quality slow release fertiliser. I avoid using any potting mix with water crystals for indoor plants. 3. Fertilise! So. Important. In. Spring. Plants need food if they are going to grow - liquid fertiliser, granulated fertiliser, natural fertiliser -start researching what your plants requirements are, and ensure this is done regularly and more frequently during spring. 4. Top Dressing Noticed any plants needing a top up of potting mix? Top dressing is adding more potting mix and slow release fertiliser on top of your existing mix. This is good for plants that dont really need repotting -make sure you still liquid fertilise as well. 5. Pests!! Spring means more insects and lots of sweet new growth that pests love! When youre trimming your plants, keep an eye out for any pests and ensure you check more regularly during spring as they tend to multiply quicker as the weather warms up!! 19.01.2022 My latest Propagation Stations The first one is made from an exotic hardwood with an unusual grain that radiates out from a centre point and is even more beautiful in person. The second and third pieces are made from Huon Pine which is a very special timber that only grows in the wet, temperate rainforests of South West Tasmania on the whole planet! Lagarostrobus franklinii (its proper name) is not actually a pine and is the only member of its family, so a pretty uniq...ue tree which grows extremely slowly, averaging just 1 millimetre in girth per year. They can grow to be 2,500 years old which means some of them started life BC! Add to this the fact that they do not start to reproduce until 600 to 800 years of age and you have a very special tree whose timber also has remarkable properties. The timber has a very high oil content, methyl eugenol, which renders it impervious to insects, waterproof, and imbues it with its characteristic sappy perfume. The high oil content also means the timber can be bent, shaped, worked and sculpted without splitting and finishes to a superb, fine lustre. Pale straw coloured when first cut, it ages to a rich honey gold. 09.01.2022 ...still a way to go yet including more hanging plants (to really give the room an in the forest feel), painting those white hanging pots forest green and finding the right art for the wall above the bed head, but Im happy with the progress so far. Hanging the old twisty wooden vine (not a branch) from the ceiling for all the hanging plants was an easy way to add greenery and a jungly feature. Ive also chosen larger leafy plants to give the feeling that you are being e...nveloped by the forest around you :-Ficus Lyrata and Tineke, and the Chamaedorea Oblongata (which will grow to the height of the room -3m- blurring and filling the corner where the mural meets the white wall). She lives here next to a Western facing frosted window -so very bright in the afternoon.
