25.01.2022 M returned today with the Shield she had made in her session last fortnight - painted! Hows the Unicorn!? Beautiful job, M. A shield does provide a blank canvas on which to do some like belt artwork. Nice job! #heritagewoodcraftcentre ... #thejoyofwood #privatetuition #swordandshield #unicorn #kidswoodworking See more

24.01.2022 Andre, after previously making his five beautiful dovetailed boxes in his Private Tuition sessions , is now building a modular chook yard! What a contrast! Of course, each panel is a woodworking project in itself, with all the housing joints cut by hand. Each panel, after being painted, will be covered with wire, the funky house made, then the whole thing will be delivered to Andres home where we will assemble it. The completed chook yard will have a footprint of 2.5 m x 1....8m. A nice little size for 4 or 5 hens. Such a wonderful variety of projects are born from the Private Tuition sessions in our workshop. I am looking forward to the surprises in store in 2021! Bring them on! #thejoyofwood #heritagewoodcraftcentre #privatetuition #chookyard

24.01.2022 We are pleased to announce the Joy of Wood is now a Dealer for BeaverCraft Tools in Australia! We have 7 different carving tools on sale from BeaverCraft so far. With more to come. A short 4 minute video introducing each tool will be found of our YouTube channel. These tools will not be available on our Etsy Shop. They are available instead from our website shop: www.thejoyofwood.com.au/shop... Check them out. BeaverCraft Tools have been made in Ukraine since 2014. The high carbon steel blades come polished to a razor sharp edge, ready to use straight out of the box. We are proud to be making these available to spoon carvers, Kuksa carvers, and other woodcarving enthusiasts in Australia. Interestingly, this further move into retailing is one of the ways our business has adapted to our Covid/post-Covid world. We will all be changed ... ...but traditional skills will live on. #thejoyofwood #heritagewoodcraftcentre #beavercraft #kuksacarving #spooncarving #woodcarving #tooljoy #beavercrafttools

24.01.2022 Today Felix was very pleased to finish making Football Dad in the style of the Will Hero computer game characters. Felix has put his Dad into the game by the way of this character. His dad loves American Football, so Football has a helmet and his weapon is a football with a spike at the front and a stick of dynamite strapped to the ball! We recycled a pencil to make the stick of dynamite, and the strap was made from a piece of recycled milk formula tin. The football was... whittled from a piece of silky oak, as we used a variety of glues and fixings to hold it all together. Felix is very good at mixing colours to get the paints just right. There was carving, nailing, drilling and more. Making these characters offers so many opportunities to use different tools and techniques - to go from concept drawing to the finished product. He has quite a collection now! #thejoyofwood #heritagewoodcraftcentre #privatetuition #willhero #kidswoodworking

24.01.2022 Eight year old Ryan carved this spoon recently in his Private Tuition session, and last week he completed it and took it home. The next day he turned 9. Ryan had done a whittling workshop with us some time ago, and he was pleased to apply his memory of how to carve a ball, a finial, on the end of his spoon handle. We love teaching kids whittling skills. We love to see them enjoying using those skills.... Nice work, Ryan! #heritagewoodcraftcentre #thejoyofwood #spooncarving #kidswoodworking #whittling #privatetuition

24.01.2022 The Legendary Tyson busy demonstrating and explaining tool use for the making of the paddle boats today with one of the 3 classes of Year 2 students at Floreat Park Primary School today. Run within the STEM curriculum, it is all about Forces and Motion. We just love the look of pure delight on the kids faces when they first let their lackey-powered paddle boats loose on the ponds we have in the class. 23.01.2022 Today nine year old Ryan finished upholstering his stool. He started the stool pre-Covid-19, before the lockdown. On returning to his fortnightly Private Tuition three months later, it was back onto the stool again. He was inspired by a stool in Alison Ospinas book, Green Wood Chairs, but wanted an upholstered top instead. That was his plan from the beginning. The legs had previously been split from a Cape Lilac (Melia azedarach) logs, and he shaped them with a drawknife ...and concave spokeshave on the shaving horse. Then the rails. We used 3/4 ply for the top, as it was to be upholstered. We put a coat of Livos oil on the frame last time, so this time it was ready for the upholstery. That was todays task, and it all went well. Fantastic job, Ryan. Love the blue fabric you chose for it! #thejoyofwood #heritagewoodcraftcentre #capelilac #stool #kidswoodworking #privatetuition #thejoyofstoolmaking

23.01.2022 I love going to my local Flea Market. It can be a great source of treasure. Tool treasure! I recently found this trio of Dutch -made planes, which date from about 1950. Beautifully made, and the steel in the heavy blades is fantastic quality. Love the brass work in the moving fillister plane. What a score! I love the thrill of the hunt. Some days you get nothing. Some days you strike it lucky... like this! ... Great additions to our teaching workshop space. We love old tools, and we love making them sing again! #thejoyofwood #heritagewoodcraftcentre #fleamarketjoy #jnooitgedagt #woodenplanes See more

23.01.2022 Hand cutting dovetail joints, as the corner joints for 5 boxes. Andre has a special project, to make 3 Jarrah boxes. We are making a few spare parts, just in case. Hopefully we will end up with a couple of extra boxes from the spares. It is a great process, best done as a batch lot, exploiting the benefits of muscle memory with repetitive actions. It aids accuracy. The other day we cut all the tails, and I showed Andre the trick of using a block cramped to the scribe line, ...to aid perfectly square cleaning up with the chisels. I hadnt used this trick for many years, so it was fun to offer it as an alternative method. The addition of the Moxon Vice made everything easier on the back and the eyes! Love the hand cutting of dovetails. Who needs router jigs? We like to develop and use real skills instead! #heritagewoodcraftcentre #thejoyofwood #handskills #privatetuition #dovetails #moxonvice #gentsaw #copingsaw #boxmaking #madebyhand

22.01.2022 It all starts with a full scale drawing on a piece of ply. Rebekah is making a Shaker Style Night Stand. She saw a picture on the internet, and we have created a drawing using those design elements and Rebekahs requirements. In her weekly Private Tuition sessions, Rebekah is learning the process of making this lovely piece, as she goes. Weve previously done the planning and drawing, weve glued up the panels, cut the components to size, and this week we started cutting the... housings for the shelves-which will have decorative tusk tenons protruding through the cabinet sides. Cutting the housings (dados) by hand is made easier with our longest Carcass (Tenon) Saw against a high straightedge to cut the walls, before removing much of the waste with a chisel. Next a Router Plane will be used to clean out the Dados to the correct/consistent depth. Such a great experience, with so many aspects to the construction with different hand tools to be used. Wonderful stuff! Great work, Rebekah! #thejoyofwood #heritagewoodcraftcentre #privatetuition #handtooljoy #madebyhand

22.01.2022 The very clever Rebekah , in her Private Tuition sessions, recently carved this Back Scratcher from a piece of Black Walnut. It was a Christmas present for a cat lover. Hence the cat’s paw for the scratching end and the mouse carved into the handle end. The mouse even has whiskers, compliments of the workshop hand broom!! What a delightful job you did on this, Rebekah! Such a lovely carving job. 20.01.2022 Renee completed making her Jarrah Cooking Spoon this morning, which she had started in the Private Tuition session last week. It started out as one of the Spoon Blanks which we sell on-line. What a lovely job she did! Renees first spoon! ... Just goes to show that anyone can carve a spoon - even with huge nails! 17.01.2022 Holiday carving. A nice little Yellow Tingle Tea Caddy Scoop. Short handle to fit in the jar.

17.01.2022 I love this photo. Rebekah using a mallet and chisel to remove the waste from the dados she is cutting. These will house the shelves in the Shaker -style Night Stand she is making in her weekly Private Tuition sessions. First the walls of the dado are cut with a saw, as in the last post about Rebekahs project. Then the chisel and mallet is used to remove much of the waste, then a Router Plane is used to clean out the bottoms of the Dados to the correct depth. It is a wonde...rful process. In cabinet making terminology, a groove runs parallel to the grain, and a dado runs at right angles to the grain. These dados will house the ends of the shelves. #thejoyofwood #heritagewoodcraftcentre #privatetuition #madebyhand

16.01.2022 Chook Carving! It was a heap of fun today in our Whittling Workshop. After brushing up our knife skills, we drew our potential chook ideas on our Chook Blanks, and we got to work. Once the shaping was done , we added one some details with a V-tool and some smaller knives. The painting is a lot of fun too! Job done when we seperate the completed chook from the stick! Why chooks? Because it’s a fun thing to do - and while having fun we are developing our knife skills. These s...kills are very valuable when Spoon Carving. That is the public workshop we are offering next weekend. Don’t miss it! I love the way every carved chook is different to the the next! 15.01.2022 The Long Handled SK2 Hook Knife, by BeaverCraft, is a fantastic tool for hollowing Kuksa (and spoons). It has a 300mm long handle, for powerful two handed action. Here I am trying out a piece of Silky Oak for my latest Kuksa. This is one of a number of BeaverCraft Tools we are pleased to make available to the Australian Spoon Carving Community, as Dealers for BeaverCraft Tools in Australia. Available on our website shop: www.thejoyofwood.com.au/shop These long handled hook k...nives are also great for spoon carving for people with some arthritis in the hands/wrists, or other such conditions where using one hand is a bit tricky. BeaverCraft also have some others hook knives with 200mm handles. Beautiful tools! Check them out on our web site shop! The prices are very reasonable, too. #thejoyofwood #heritagewoodcraftcentre #beavercrafttools #kuksacarving #hookknife #spooncarving #kuksa See more

15.01.2022 Cirrus. Shes fluffier than the cloud she was named after. A lovely Silky Bantam. So whats the wood connection here? Shes standing in the doorway of our Chook Taj Mahal, which is made from recycled pallet and packing crate material and recycled corrugated iron off-cuts from skip bins. That pile of northern hemispherical softwoods is just a magnet to hungry termites, so the chook house is elevated up on recycled jarrah stumps. Good old-fashioned sheet metal Ant Caps sit on ...the tops of the stumps as a physical barrier to the termites. The softwood bearers are skew nailed to the tops of the Jarrah stumps through the ant caps. This is how all west Australian timber framed houses and stumped floors were built right up until the arrival of the concrete house pad. It still works brilliantly, on stumped floors and walls. Our chook house is a splendour of recycled materials, made more splendiferous by the delightful variety of feathered inhabitants who roost and lay within. #chookhouse #silkybantam #recycledwood #woodrecycling #termitebarrier

14.01.2022 Im at the Fine Timber Companys Open Day in Naval Base. What an amazing array of timber! Some imported from the US and Europe, but most sourced from salvaged trees and plantations. These guys do sustainably sourced beautiful timbers and the variety is mind boggling. Contact details amongst these pics.

14.01.2022 Today Rebekah made great progress on her Shaker Style Night Stand, as we assembled the pieces and inserted the wedges (tusks). In this case the wedges are more decorative than structural, as pounding them in too hard would crack the short protrusions of the main tenons of the shelves. In her next session, Rebekah will cut the dados into the underside of the top so that it houses down onto the top ends of the sides. Great work! Its lookin pretty flash!... #heritagewoodcraftcentre #thejoyofwood #privatetuition #madebyhand #shakerstyle See more

14.01.2022 Those annoyingly short rounds cut by Tree-Loppers can be a source for nice eating spoons. Tom made his first Spoon, an Eater in Silky Oak recently, over a couple of sessions. He split the blank out of the chunk, shaped it with the axe, then refined the shape with hook knife and Sloyd knife. He sanded it and wet sanded it with a mix of citrus oils and Tung oil, to a silky smooth finish. All his own work. Lovely. The colours and patterns in the wood are all a product of the ...story of the trees life. This 60 year old tree, from Matthews front yard in Applecross, died standing. The fungal attack on the sapwood on the north side produced these amazing colours. So yummo. This tree might be gone, but it lives on in so many spoons, butter knives, stools, carved animals, spatulas, and more spoons of so many styles and sizes. Very cool. Nice job, Tom. #heritagewoodcraftcentre #thejoyofwood #spooncarving #madebyhand #silkyoak #privatetuition

14.01.2022 The Legendary Kiah, age 15, today took home his completed Display Cabinet, made from Jarrah and glass. He made it to house and display his collection of Warhammer Characters. It has a pair of down lights fitted inside the top, has a locking door, and now just needs the glass shelves to be added. What a beautiful piece of work! Congratulations, Kiah, on a job well done! Coming in for Private Tuition fortnightly for just 2 hours a time, it was going to take a while. Then th...ere was the COVID-19 hiatus... so well over a year from when it started, here we are. Job done. It all began from a drawing which Kiah brought in ( shown in one of the pics) and away we went. In the 4 1/2 years that Kiah has been coming to us, this nice young man has made some amazing stuff. However this cabinet is the pinnacle of what he has done with us. Awesome. So it is with some sadness that we say goodby to Kiah for now, as he embarks on his new journey at TAFE. Take care, my friend! Kiah’s fortnightly Thursday session, 10:30-12:30, is now available for somebody else... let us know if you are interested. #thejoyofwood #heritagewoodcraftcentre #kidswoodworking #kiahthelegend #homeschooling #goodskills #jarrah #warhammer #displaycabinet

13.01.2022 The Legendary Oliver does it again. Today he finished making his Spiral Spoon. They are a mongrel to do all the sanding required. 12.01.2022 The Christmas Chook is almost done! Following your collective advice, I painted the boots black. Thankyou. I opted for an off the knife finish. No sandpaper used in the making of this chook. It made the cutting in with the painting trickier, but I’m pretty happy with it.... This Christmas Chook was a lot of fun to carve. 10.01.2022 I owe so much to my Dad. This quiet and humble man, Doug Miller, spent a lifetime as a highly skilled CabinetMaker/Joiner. He started his apprenticeship in 1945 and went on to train 11 apprentices in his time. I was not one of them - I was privileged to learn so much more from him in later life, when I was ready to listen to him! He is 91 years old, and cant do what he used to do. His memory is failing, but every now and then little gems emerge from deep within. He has alway...s loved his chooks, and as a kid he wanted originally to be a poultry farmer. This mornings gem, which I had never heard before, came out when we were discussing his eggs: Thats where it all started, he said. As a kid in the war years I used to deliver rolls of twine to people in Dalkeith/Nedlands who were making camouflage nets in their homes. He indicated the sizes were probably 20 x 20. I had a trailer on the back of my bike and I would deliver twine and take away the completed nets. It was a way many people at home could contribute to the war effort. While I was doing these deliveries I realised people would like to buy my eggs. Two bantam eggs cost the same as a bigger egg. Thats how it all started. I asked if he was paid for his deliveries of twine. No, he replied, that was my contribution to the war effort. But I sold a lot of eggs on the side. Love this guy. Happy Fathers Day, Dad. #fathersday #warstories #poultry #fatherstories #eggstories

09.01.2022 Last week William finished constructing his Energy Blade, from the computer game Halo. I reckon we did a pretty good job too. It started out with a computer printout image, which we produced onto a larger piece of pine, using maths (ratios). It was our last session of Private Tuition for 2020, so he took his Power Blade home with him to finish the painting. I look forward to seeing it with the complete paint job! That should be early 2021.... What an amazing array of characters they have made through 2020 - William and his brother Felix -all characters from their favourite computer games. Fantastic! #thejoyofwood #heritagewoodcraftcentre #privatetuition #halo #kidswoodworking

09.01.2022 I’m working on a Christmas Chook. When I have coloured her, she’ll will have a red Santa hat, with a white ruff and white pom-Pom. Her Santa boots will have white ruffs at the top, but the boots... should they be red or black? What do you think? This has been lots of fun, starting with one of our English Lime Chook Carving Blanks. I’ve carved a lot of chooks before, but never with boots on! Such fun.... #thejoyofwood #heritagewoodcraftcentre #madebyhand #beavercrafttools #woodcarving #chookcarving #moraknife Did you know we sell lovely BeaverCraft tools I used for this chook on our Webpage shop? www.thejoyofwood.com/shop

09.01.2022 Andre recently completed his very special project. Five beautiful boxes, with hand cut dovetails and brass hardware. He did such a great job. What was the special project? Andre’s Grandfather, who was very special to him, passed away earlier this year. Three boxes were to be used to distribute his ashes amongst the family. We reckon Andres Grandad would be very proud of the quality of the workmanship! ... Funnily enough, I had suggested that we make 5 boxes, and select the best 3 for the special task. However, all 5 were brilliant quality, with beautifully accurate dovetails cut by Andre, nicely fitted hardware, and beautifully finished with Livos Oil. So another similar task has been found in the family for the other two boxes! Andre, what can I say, but: Nice! #privatetuition #heritagewoodcraftcentre #thejoyofwood #handcutdovetails #jarrahboxes #madebyhand

05.01.2022 Kitchen Spatulas are fun to design and make. Starting with one of our Spatula Blanks, it can all be done with a Sloyd Knife, like the Mora 120 pictured. If you are learning whittling or carving, spatulas are a great way to get used to working with the grain direction, and the application of good knife skills. These blanks are available on our Etsy Shop, and we also have a great video of how to do it, on our YouTube channel. Whittling and crafting with our hands is great fun a...nd very relaxing. Even better when you do it together. Whittling is a very positive activity for kids too. Its great when kids and parents/grandparents do it together. Whether sitting around a campfire, or holed up in your apartment because of COVID-19, whittling is a delightful pastime! www.etsy.com/au/shop/thejoyofwoodstore Of course, you can always use a coping saw, a Vice and a spokeshave! That works too for kitchen spatulas. #thejoyofwood #heritagewoodcraftcentre #whittling #kitchenspatulas #getwhittling #moraknife #madebyhand

05.01.2022 In Private Tuition this week, William made this lovely pine Kitchen Chopping Board. After drawing the shape on the piece of wood, he cut it out with a Coping Saw. He then used a Spokeshave and a Rasp to clean up the edges followed by the Squirrel Tail Plane and sandpaper. With the coat of oil applied, he had lots to smile about! Great job, William!... #thejoyofwood #heritagewoodcraftcentre #kidswoodworking #madebyhand #privatetuition See more

04.01.2022 My Silky Oak Kuksa took a turn to the unexpected tonight. First up, last week I had to cut a big piece off the top as a crack had developed. It went from a Kuksa to more of a Soup Bowl. Tonight I was working on the outside and all of a sudden the notion of an Ale Hen infected my mind. So the handle developed a comb, eyes and a beak. The other pencil lines tell of probable future developments, making it even more Ale Hen. The low head must mean its on the nest laying low as a... fox snoops around! This Kuksa started pre-COVID-19, in February. Along came the virus, the lock down, and everything changed. It was in a plastic bag in the fridge, all these months later - covered in green mould. An eco-system in itself. So I got back into carving the Kuksa and the story has been gradually unfolding over the last couple of weeks. Quite an adventure. The wood is still remarkably very green. I am just letting it dry out in the workshop now. We are on the home straight. Fingers crossed! #thejoyofwood #heritagewoodcraftcentre #kuksacarving #alehen #carvingadventures #madebyhand

03.01.2022 Today Ben finished making the upstand for his cabinet, which will house his collection of West Coast Eagles and other caps. He has done a great job with the relief carving of the Chooks Head (as I call it) and after finishing the carving today he finished shaping the top of the upstanding. It looks pretty good up there on the cabinet! He has been working on this cabinet in his weekly Private Tuition sessions. 03.01.2022 Andre was pretty chuffed today when the first of the dovetail joints came together. Only 19 to go! It is very satisfying cutting dovetail joints by hand. Andre is doing a great job. We are doing enough components to create 5 boxes, of which the best 3 will be chosen for a very special project. 02.01.2022 Ben is building a gate for his Jarrah staircase in his Private Tuition sessions. The Milo Gate is to keep Milo the Pug from going up the stairs at times. The sloping top will ensure the gate will swing back against the wall in underneath and parallel to the handrail on the wall. With all the balusters mortices chopped, and the mortise and tenons cut for the gate frame corners, it’s time to make the balusters. These will be turned and fluted to match the existing staircase... . This week Ben will begin turning the gate balusters on the lathe. It’s gonna be fun! #thejoyofwood #heritagewoodcraftcentre #privatetuition

Merry Christmas! This Monarch Butterfly (also known as the Wanderer Butterfly) I photographed in my Mums front yard in Augusta, WA, this afternoon. Did you know they are not native to Australia? First sighted in Sydney in 1871, they spread with several introduced weed species which were their food source.

01.01.2022 This is an appeal to all those tree loving people out there. What species might this Acacia be? Pics of leaves, bark and Wood may help. A large smallish tree(!) Im told, it was growing in one of Perths southern suburbs. It has round yellow flower clusters, not the catkin type. As I split and sawed up the Wood, it had a very strong smell- almost an ammonia smell. Can anybody help with identification possibilities? It would be most appreciated. I was gifted 2chunks of this tree after it was cut down. Lovely Wood!

01.01.2022 Andre has made some lovely spoons over the last couple of years, but this one is a ripper! A beautiful piece of Tasmanian Blackwood which grew in the Southwest of WA. Such a beautiful piece of wood! Contrasting heartwood, sapwood and spalting. Lovely colours, a nice design, and of course his trademark expression: Nice. This is one of your best yet, Andre. Legend.
