23.01.2022 Many within the community may have felt scared, worried and overwhelmed about the Coronavirus (COVID19) outbreak recently. These feelings can also manifest in children as they try to interpret and understand the changes that are happening. The photo below shows signs you may notice your child/ren showing, as a result of feeling anxious. ... Regardless of how old your children are, theres a helpful way to have the COVID-19 conversation. Beyond Blue have created information to help support families talking to children about the current events. We have placed the link to this website in our comments section for anyone needing some ideas on how to talk to their child/ren about Coronavirus.

23.01.2022 Inclusion is the latest buzz word! But what does this mean? Ask a five year old and its simple, Inclusion means including everyone. So why are we seeing so many children struggling to belong? This question can be answered best by looking at Maslows hierarchy of needs; Needs lower down on the hierarchy must first be fulfilled before progressing up higher. ... Inclusion is synonymous with belonging and love. A child can not belong in an environment that does not accept them for who they are. For belonging and inclusion to truly exist; children must be taught how to be inclusive of each other. Lev Vygotsky, a philosopher, created the Zone of Proximal Development, which is founded on the idea that people can only learn new information if it is based off their prior experiences, knowledge and skills. For more information on Maslows hierarchy of needs see: http://www.researchhistory.org//maslows-hierarchy-of-needs/ For more information on Vygotskys Zone of Proximal Development see: http://www.innovativelearning.com//zone-of-proximal-develo

22.01.2022 As Easter approaches we reflect on the unprecedented challenges and uncertainties that have made 2020 a year to remember - A year like no other, a year of drought, bushfire and now disease. It is also a time to reflect on the changes that are emerging in the education of our children. In this new normal it is important to also review and reflect on our image of the child as we re-frame learning into a digital context that has come about through necessity. ... Loris Malaguzzi in 1993 spoke to the statement your image of the child; where teaching begins - "There are hundreds of different images of the child. Each one of you has inside yourself an image of the child that directs you as you begin to relate to a child. This theory within you pushes you to behave in certain ways: it orients you as you talk to the child, listen to the child, observe the child. It is very difficult for you to act contrary to this image" - (Malaguzzi 1194 pg.3). As learning morphs into an online digital environment are we as educators reflecting on our ability to scaffold this learning for a child in a way where they are able to maintain their right to be a producer of this new culture rather than a consumer; where they still have the right to be agentic in this matter. It is important to remember that online environments can shift learning from active to passive from participatory to transmissive. As educators and parents, we must consider these aspects and critically reflect on this when designing and shifting learning in this new direction. What might the future be like? Are you using technology to entertain or to educate and engage? We at the Kindergarten leave you with these thoughts and wish you all a safe and healthy Easter - an Easter that will be like no other before it. Please maintain a social distance, stay at home and wash your hands.

13.01.2022 Maisie visits The Kindergarten! Maisie Hammerlsey made an appearance at The Kindergarten. We immediately noticed the childrens excitement and eagerness to gain her attention. Providing opportunities for children to explore relationships with other living things, educators are scaffolding and fostering childrens capacity to understand and respect the natural environment and the interdependence between people and animals.... Maggie Dent (2010) believes that keeping pets is a definitive way of "adding to loving committed care and nurturance early in a childs life and to build early emotional growth". Maggie goes on to say that children with pets have a tendency to be more empathetic and thoughtful of others. I wonder how Maisie being here influenced the childrens context? *Do we see elements of home contexts being displayed? * Does Maisie shape or influence some of the childrens identities somehow?
