25.01.2022 The Kitchen is thrilled to announce that we are now representing portrait photographer Joel Pratley Photography A self-confessed storytelling enthusiast, Joel has a knack for capturing the vulnerability of the human spirit, creating compositions rich with authenticity and feeling. Born and raised in public housing by a single mum, Joel discovered photography as an instrument to empower and give voice to others through his lens. His distinctive style of portraiture exhibits his empathic approach to his subjects, producing images that are engaging, emotive and disarmingly honest. #JoelPratley

"Its hard not to acknowledge the bombardment of COVID related news and the detrimental reality of this situation as it unfolds. In contrast I feel now more than ever an appreciation for the silence and mental clarity the natural world brings us. This collection of imagery is an observation of the past week and a glimpse of respite from the current happenings. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did." #EdTriglone #ArtinIsolation #Covid_19 #LifeinLockdown

16.01.2022 Tim Swallow shoots painter Nick Pont as part of a new project to capture Australian artists as they practice their craft in their studios. "Nicks approach to art is from a pure place. A place thats real. Whilst we were chatting he said to me: Im not looking for instant gratification or fame, I just want to keep painting and putting all my ideas onto canvas. Ill be painting until I die so Im not phased if the money comes later, thats something Ill enjoy when the time i...s right. Nick usually paints through the night when his wife and baby boy are sound asleep. He has a beautiful way of storytelling and depicting Australian culture both past and present. His earthy tones and splashes of vibrant colour remind me of how special and diverse our landscape is down under." #TimSwallow #ArtinIsolation #NickPont

12.01.2022 Prior to the tightening of lockdown restrictions, Nick Bowers spent a morning capturing spearfisher Vita in her element along the coast of Sydneys Eastern Suburbs. "We hiked into Malabar National Park and made our way down hidden ladders to a rock shelf. Vita geared up and said "Ill see you in 40 minutes", before disappearing into the ocean. An hour later she pulled herself out of the water, accompanied by two bright red fish. I asked Vita what she liked about spearfishing. She said Out in the ocean you are in a different world, I am 100% absorbed when Im in the water. The sustainable spear fisher code of only catch what you can eat fresh on that day creates a closed circle, and I love that"

10.01.2022 The Kitchen is thrilled to be announcing the launch of a new project in collaboration with Christopher Doyle & Co, titled "Between Today and Tomorrow", aiming to support artists through the challenges that this new decade has brought. As the nation comes to a stand still, the natural world is healing and COVID-19 has changed the way we live, work and communicate. It has dramatically changed how we perceive and interact with the world around us. Between Today and Tomorrow sh...owcases how artists feel and interpret this change. We have invited a number of photographers, film makers and visual artists to submit innovative and original works conceived during the time of COVID-19. The exhibition runs from June - September 2020 and each week we will showcase a selection of new works. At the end of the exhibition we will auction all works online with proceeds going directly to the contributing artist(s). 08.01.2022 In early March when the world started to go into lockdown, Australian photographer Alexandrena Parker and New York stylist Maria Montane mutually decided to focus their energy in a positive and creative direction. Initially they discussed Alex capturing her daughter Ruby at home, with Maria styling remotely from the US. However, as FaceTime shoots began to appear online they decided to join the trend and experiment with a virtual shoot. During this time, children all over t...he world were embracing the rainbow as a symbol of hope and positivity, and the colourful icon was appearing everywhere, chalked on streets and framed in windows. Maria came up with the idea of curating the shoot by the seven colours of the rainbow, each colour featuring a different child. Through Instagram, they connected with 7 families across the world. Parents were asked to collect as many things in their house according to the colour they had been allocated to create their set- anything from cereal boxes, books, toys, furniture, and clothes. The series was captured via Zoom and the video footage was taken from the recorded sessions. The making of the series was just as important as the final product for Maria and Alex, as it challenged and pushed them to create and capture in a profoundly new way. Each shoot took around 20 minutes to capture, with Alex directing the parents to rearrange elements of the set and position the picture frame at certain angles, whilst also directing the children (with language barriers at times!). Once the series had been shot, Alex then experimented with different ways to present the images. She used her Instax polaroid printer to display the images and then photographed them digitally. The photo series is a beautiful representation of how connected the world really is, even through time of extreme difficulty, and the wonderful capacity for optimism and positivity we as human beings all share. Maria and Alex hope that maybe one day, this series will become a small part of history, showing how photography was produced even through times of physical distancing. Maybe in the future people will be looking at virtual shoots in galleries, just as we look at Picasso and Monet, revealing the limitless possibilities of how art can be created.
