25.01.2022 Last night was graduation night for the August puppy class! Congratulations to all the amazing puppies and their dedicated families. We had a group full of social butterflies in this class. All the pups played beautifully together despite the obvious size difference between Nutmeg the dachshund and everyone else!!!

23.01.2022 Winnie is absolutely loving his noseworks class! Last night we took some video of a room search. Winnie did so well! My reward at source skills need a little bit of work He is no longer the worried boy who froze upon entering the room the first time. Now he waits eagerly at the door to the noseworks room desperate to get inside! Thanks to John of Canberra noseworks for filming

23.01.2022 Don't forget to practice your recall with your dog this long weekend! Recall is not only a crucial behaviour to teach your dog but it can also be tons of fun! I always heavily reward a recall to make sure it is a game my dog LOVES to play with me. Winston comes back, gets several treats one after the other and then gets to return to the fun.

21.01.2022 Last night Winston went to his first ever noseworks class! (Close up of the nose that was used ) While it may not seem like a big deal to most this was a massive achievement for Winnie. Winnie and I are on a journey of rehabilitation. Building up to going to class has involved months of training, confidence building, help from a behaviour vet for medication and gaining the trust of this very sensitive soul. ... Winnie had to overcome his intense fear of the car which took a massive backwards step after a stay in the vet and an ear infection. We started our program from almost the beginning a month ago and he is now doing better than he was before. On his first turn at noseworks Winnie froze upon entering the room, overwhelmed by the different environment, the strange people and not knowing what he should be doing. He looked to me for help and didn't want to move away. The amazing John Sam, noseworks instructor, adjusted things by dropping treats into the boxes so Winston could hear the sound. This broke Winnie out of his freeze and he went off looking for where the treats had landed! On his second run he was like a completely different dog. Ran eagerly to the door awaiting his turn. As soon as I unclipped his lead he was off searching in the boxes, tail wagging! He offered John a nice sit just to see if he could get a treat directly from the source, cheeky boy I am so unbelievably proud of my little Winnie. His bounce back and resilience has improved dramatically. Just to watch him do the second round with such joy brought a tear to the eye. I can't recommend Canberra Noseworks highly enough. For all those dogs that struggle with the world, that are reactive to other dogs (no dogs see each other during this class) or just want to have fun, this class if for you! Thank you John for reading Winnie and adjusting things to give him the best chance of success. We are so looking forward to next week!

21.01.2022 Here is Patch and his mum showing off their engage/disengage skills! Patch is reactive towards other dogs and he has been doing fortnightly sessions with Alfie the Kelpie to help him become comfortable with seeing other dogs and teach him a behaviour he can offer instead of lunging and barking. In this video he is looking at Alfie in the distance, he then turns back to his mum for a treat. The sight of another dog has become the cue to look back to his mum for a reward. This ...both associates seeing other dogs with good things (getting a reward) and he knows what behaviour he should perform when he sees one. His mum keeps her body posture neutral and relaxed during the training and only reaches for her treats once Patch has looked back and she has given her verbal marker "yes!". It has been a process to get Patch to be so comfortable with this. We initially began at 60m away from Alfie. Patch can now happily walk parallel to Alfie at 10m away. Patch's family have put an enormous amount of work into Patch's training and it is clearly paying off! Go Patch!

20.01.2022 Meet Huxley! Huxley can be quite worried about seeing other dogs when out walking and sometimes finds it hard to settle at home. Together with Huxley's mum we are working to help Huxley feel calm and confident around things that cause him stress. He is a beautiful boy and has a lovely bond with his mum who is dedicated to helping him be his best self

17.01.2022 Meet Violet! Violet and her family are working on the puppy basics to make sure Violet grows up to be a confident and happy adult dog. So far Violet is a great little pup and has already mastered crate training and sleeping through the night! She is working on her toilet training and interactions with her human siblings as well as basic behaviours such as sit and walking on lead. Go Violet!

16.01.2022 Meet Brave Dog! This stunning fellow is a bit worried about going in the car and having his harness put on. He also gets quite excited when he hears trucks out the front of the house and this leads to him racing up and down the fence line until the truck moves away. Brave dog is lucky enough to have a loving and devoted family who are committed to his training and giving him the best possible life

16.01.2022 Meet Ares! Ares is an 8 month old American Staffy. As he entered adolescence Ares started becoming a little excited when he saw other dogs on lead. His owners were very proactive about getting some help before this became a bigger issue. Today we did some training in a busy park. Ares took to the training straight away. Go Ares!!

14.01.2022 Meet Milo! This stunning fellow has some issues with reactivity, light and shadow chasing and generalised anxiety. He has made a massive improvement in the last month thanks to his dedicated family who are doing everything possible to help him get better including seeing a behaviour vet and following his training plan to a T! Milo is a lucky boy

14.01.2022 Meet Pilot! Pilot the moodle is a very smart little boy and is enjoying learning all about the big wide world and how to fit into his new family. He is also super small and has to wear a bell on his collar so no one trips over him! This came in quite handy for me the other day.

12.01.2022 Winnie pooh is 2! Happy Birthday to my cheeky, smart, snuggle bear . Winston got to celebrate by spending time with his best friend Ellie playing tug, chasies and wrestling! Then some nosework and an extra special dinner topped off the day. Now for cuddle time on the bed.

10.01.2022 Two pups having a nice relaxed long line sniffy walk! This video might not look like much but it shows the enormous progress Dotty the Labradoodle has made. Once upon a time this sort of walk wouldn't have been possible for Dotty. She would have been fixated on the other dog, jumping all over it and becoming frustrated if she couldn't get to it. I first met Dotty in puppy class in August. She struggled in her interactions with the other puppies. She was very rough and didn'...t listen to their requests for space. She would become very frustrated near the other pups on lead and pull towards them and bark. She was unable to join in on playtime. Dotty's amazing family recognised that there was a problem and were very committed to helping Dotty learn better ways to deal other dogs. Dotty has been doing weekly sessions with Wally the cattle dog, first learning to be calm seeing him at a distance and then slowly decreasing the distance until they were able to meet. Wally calmly let her know what he would tolerate and what he would not and she learnt to listen to him. Dotty has been able to transfer her new skills when out walking in the neighbourhood and recently completed our Senior Puppy class with flying colours. I am so proud of Dotty and her family with all that they have achieved. Their dedication and patience with Dotty has paid off enormously

10.01.2022 Meet Maru! Maru is a 12 week old Akita Inu. His family are working on settling him into his new home and teaching him some basic behaviours to give him the best start in life

10.01.2022 The Mindful Canine Staff Profile: ALFIE Alfie is a 13 year old Australian Kelpie. I adopted him from Canberra Pound when he was 10 months old. He is a very intelligent and independent boy who loves solving puzzles, snoozing on the couch and going on sniffy walks. ... Alfie is enjoying his new career of working with my reactive dog clients helping them learn how to associate seeing another dog with good things. His job involves being calm in the presence of another dog, walking slowly, sniffing and eating treaties. Alfie is pretty sure this is the best job ever.

09.01.2022 Meet Pilot! Pilot is a Kelpie cross who was lucky enough to be adopted by his new family a few months ago. Pilot can get a bit worried about strangers entering his personal space when out walking, especially if it comes as a surprise! Pilot and his family are working on helping him feel more comfortable with strangers being nearby by creating positive associations and teaching alternative behaviours he can perform when he sees them. This was his 3rd session and his training is coming along beautifully! Go Pilot!

08.01.2022 Happy International Dog Day!!!

06.01.2022 Here is Ruby showing off her modeling skills after a freework session at the oval. Through freework we discovered that Ruby loves the ball pit, snuffle mat and licki mat! After a rather unpleasant encounter with an out of control off lead dog Ruby was able to use her favourite items to calm down and leave the oval with a positive end to the session. Even though some of our local ovals and playing field's do allow off lead dogs this does not mean you should have your dog off lead if it is going to run across an entire oval to get to another dog and not respond to your recall! Keep your dog on a lead or a long line if they don't yet have a reliable recall. Ovals are for everyone to enjoy and feel safe!

06.01.2022 Meet Milo! Milo is a young, handsome Border Collie who has a rather intense interest in chasing cars. Milo will lunge, bark and sometimes spin on the lead when he sees a moving car which is quite stressful for both him and his owner. He is now having a break from walks to decompress while his owner works on his behaviour modification. Reactivity towards moving objects such as cars, bikes, scooters and joggers is a very common problem for our herding breeds. While it is a common behaviour, it is not a normal behaviour, and is very stressful for our dogs to engage in. If your dog is showing signs of chasing, lunging and barking at moving objects contact a force free trainer for help

06.01.2022 Meet Bon and Harry! These two beautiful boys came to live with their new family late last year. They are working on interacting appropriately with each other and walking politely on lead. They are very lucky to have a dedicated family who are eager to get into the training and help these guys settle in.

04.01.2022 The Mindful Canine will be holding its next SENIOR PUPPY CLASS Thursdays at 7pm at the Weston Neighbourhood Hall.... Beginning 15th October and running for 6 weeks. For fully vaccinated pups aged 4 10 months. The class will focus on basic manners such as coming when called, walking nicely on lead, waiting to eat and not jumping up. We will also work on teaching your dog to settle and relax in different environments and be calm around other dogs and people. Price $200 For more information email [email protected]

01.01.2022 Introducing Archie! Archie is our new 18 month old Border Collie. He is a beautiful boy who loves to play with other dogs and people. He was offered to us by his previous home when they became unable to keep him due to unavoidable circumstances. After Alfie passed away Winston sunk into a depression and was continuing to decline. He got so much of his confidence and spark for life from being with Alf that his loss affected him deeply. Since Archie has come along Winston is ...once again his happy, perky self! He is loving having a new brother to spend time with, play with and help him understand the world. Archie has also had somewhat of a turbulent past through no fault of his own. We will be his 6th home. Despite all this change in his short life Archie is surprisingly well adjusted and resilient! We are all looking forward to future adventures with Archie, Winston and Wally!
