22.01.2022 Tik Tok have just announced an update to the parental controls on the app. The 'Family Pairing' allows for parents to have greater control over some elements of the privacy, sharing and commenting elements of the app. Some of the features parents can now control are: - setting their child's account to private - decide whether their "liked" videos can be viewed by others - control who can comment on their child's videos (everyone, ... friends or no one) - decide whether their child can use the search feature (prevent searching via hashtags, users, content type or sounds) Whilst these may be helpful it is also important to note that none of these stop them seeing dodgy or inappropriate content. It is also meant for the parents of 13 and over (the age rating of app) however teens are probably still going to be inclined to want to search new users and also be 'discoverable' themselves so it may not be something they are going to be happy about......however knowing that there are many users under 13 using this app it should be something that is certainly implemented for those younger users. To set up: click on "Me", select the 3 dots on top right corner, click 'Family Pairing' and follow the prompts including scan QR code to link accounts. #tiktok #onlinesafety

20.01.2022 "Constantly checking our social media pages and consuming endless amounts of bad news or doomscrollng isn’t exactly new, but 2020 has definitely brought more awareness to the habit." Some good tips in this article to be a little more mindful with our scrolling....

19.01.2022 There are some worrying figures about our children's levels of activity and the ramifications this has and will continue to have on their health and wellbeing. Whilst the physical benefits of activity and movement may be well known, the overall benefits to cognitive function and concentration as well as overall social, emotional and mental wellbeing is becoming increasingly apparent. I’m looking forward to this chat with Peter Parker, CEO of Bluearth Foundation,to discuss ho...w our lifestyle today, the structure and set up of classrooms and the school day, as well as the changing work from home arrangements is contributing to these challenges.but most importantly we will discuss what we can do as families, schools and teachers to help combat these challenges and work towards healthier communities with a healthier future. So join us Tuesday 7.30pm for the live chat and feel free to leave any questions in the comments or during the chat itself. See more

10.01.2022 This is a special message to those in Melbourne (but of course encapsulates all who have been on this journey at some point).....to say a huge congratulations on getting through so many, many, many days of remote learning! Whilst the challenges have been large we have done the best with what we have had. If someone would have told us at the start of March we would still be doing this in October we may have lost our shizz! But let's use this achievement and resilience that has developed to remind ourselves and our kids next time something seems overwhelming... that we have faced challenges, disappointment, sadness and really hard days......but we came out the other side....maybe a little battered and bruised, maybe with a whole new life perspective or maybe just with a glimmer of hope and a happy anticipation of what lies ahead.

10.01.2022 It’s been around a while but I still like this one!

08.01.2022 This little tip is a sneak peak at just one of the many strategies you will get if you join my Free 7 day Mindful Scrolling challenge. It’s not about using technology less, but using it in smarter ways to manage distractions, take back control of our time and attention and ditch the noise to instead benefit from all the great stuff online. All you have to do is join my Facebook group raising a great kid in the digital world and you will be one step closer to a more mindful scroll. #mindfulscrolling

07.01.2022 Loved my chat with Positive Parenting with Anna Partridge on all things raising kids in a the digital world :)

06.01.2022 A great article about the importance of teaching the art of being indistractible, the importance of allowing for autonomy and the notion of nurturing a healthy dose of scepticism....all of the things I focus on in my parent, student and workplace presentations on thriving in a digital world. #digitalwellbeing #onlinesafety

05.01.2022 Good luck to all the Victorian Yr 12 students starting their exams today. What a year you have had....but what a resilient group you will grow to be. And as I said to my nephew this morning "You've done the work, I know you will smash it....but I will still love you even if you go crap".

03.01.2022 So whilst the game itself is ok....I would be stearing clear of this app connected to the Among Us game that encourages the making of "friends" you can find on the game. Remember kids can play the games privately requiring a code for their mates to join...but this additional app looks like a bit of a cesspit! Thanks to The White Hatter for these images.

02.01.2022 As we head back to school and out of lockdowns, we have come to realise that our kids have many needs that were taken away during this time. So they turned to the screens, the games and the digital world to help fill those voids. Here is my latest post on how we can take back some of that control , provide other ways to have those needs met and work toward some better balance. https://themodernparent.net/what-kids-need-and-what-screen/

01.01.2022 "The extra screentime that occurred during lockdowns is becoming a hard habit to break" "I am having trouble motivating my child to get back to activities they once enjoyed" "My child has got so used to playing video games as their way of connection, entertainment and downtime that I am worried about the long term effects and how we will get back some balance" If any of these statements have been in your thoughts recently then please join me for this webinar on how we can hav...e a better understanding of the effects of screentime and how we can get back some balance and get some strategies for a pathway forward toward wellbeing and thriving both online and off. Join here or read below to find out more. https://us02web.zoom.us//register/WN_SXY-A10QT-u7gyGvkWwPfA https://themodernparent.net/weaning-the-screens-webinar/

01.01.2022 For everyone that has watched the Social Dilemma on Netflix, please know that it was a powerful piece of drama but it also ironically was heavily curated in what was a wasn't said. The points it makes are very true and real to a point, but there is also great research and great alternative approaches that were ignored as a way to deal with the dilemma and we heard from no one actually working in Silicon Valley today that may have offered alternative views. I also have colleag...ues who filmed segments for this but they didn't fit with the party line so they were cut from the doco. Ironic really when they were trying to tell us we are manipulated by the media. So yes the manipulating happens, yes we are the products that help make these companies billions, yes they know how to distract us and get our attention...but be sure you are using that knowledge to help the way you scroll and how you use technology. Be sure you are doing it for good. It is unlikely you are going to ditch it altogether so instead get critical with what you consume, look at how you use social media, and if it is adding to your day, helping you , supporting you, informing you and allowing you to grow, then be ok with that. If it is serving you up more of the same limited storylines, triggering you in any way, making you compare yourself to everyone else, making you feel crappier when you started scrolling, then listen and learn from how you use it and make the changes. And if you want to look for answers to the dilemma, you can start by joining me tomorrow in my Mindful Scrolling Challenge. You can get on board by joining the Facebook group "Raising a Great Kid in the Digital World". See you there! https://www.facebook.com/groups/659624511431038 See more
