Funny story, Ray has always been a wonderful business owner - small world but for my very first job as a fresh faced 15yr old I worked for Ray when we both lived down in Canberra! Imagine my surprise to reconnect with the person who made me love hospitality when I ventured into my own first business - AND he remembered me too! 03.01.2022 Well Monkey Fans, it’s the end of an era I’m really devastated to announce that we have finished up at Monkey Bar Cafe I had plans to continue for at least another year and build everything back up again, but unfortunately the junior football club decided I was no longer what they wanted for the venue. After 5 years of doing nothing but support them, and basically never hearing from them, this year they want to be involved and think what I’m doing isn’t good enough. ... I had found an awesome team to buy the business off me and continue the great venue but for some reason that wasn’t good enough for the football club either and they discouraged the new buyers to the point that they pulled out of the sale. Rather than offer me the chance to submit a proposal or explain what I wanted to achieve (and maybe make some of the money lost due to the cancelled sale!) the club took proposals from their own members without telling me. I was pretty devastated to learn this had happened without being given the chance, but as the club mentioned landlords don’t care about that. So here we are. After a tough year of COVID, staffing issues, stock delays and more demands from the football club.. I was left in a position of paying off some owed rent to the club with mutual payment agreements. It would seem that was no longer good enough for them - I don’t know as again the junior club have never discussed this with me. Thankfully the overall Annerley Recreation Club (that the separately run junior club is part of) has helped me negotiate the exit of lease agreement. In exchange for waiving my debt, I will be handing in the keys on Sunday and leaving them everything I’ve worked so hard for and built up in the past 5 years. It would have been better to sell the business and recoup some of my costs and effort - but they ruined that in favor of taking their own members proposal. I may sound angry - I am. I may sound sad - I am. Thank you from the bottom of my heart to every single person that has bought a coffee, enjoyed a meal or just come in for a chat at Monkey Bar I’ve loved every second of being your local coffee spot and getting to know our lovely community - I’ll miss you all more than you know! Always make good choices my friends, be kind, be safe and lots of love from my Monkey family to yours
