06.01.2022 This is our family's ofrenda It is All Saints’ Day in Bolivia; Todos Santos, a festival which mixes Catholic beliefs with ones of the Quechua and Aymara peoples. On Todos Santos we spend all morning getting ready by creating a shrine for the deceased: an Ofrenda. We decorate it with things we have made or bought at special markets that appear at this time of the year. ... The Ofrenda has photos of the departed, coca leaves, flowers, foods and drink and Bread Babies, T’anta Wawas, which symbolise the person. When I was a child, my sister Ivone and I would walk around our neighborhood going in through the open doors of each house. Inside we would pray for the departed and receive a little bit of food from that family’s Ofrenda. The Day of The Dead, El Dia de Los Muertos, is the day after Todos Santos, and we celebrate by going to the cemetery and setting up new ofrendas, playing music and remembering. On Todos Santos We welcome the departed back to earth and then the day after, on The Day of the Dead, we bid them goodbye. It is a day of dancing and music in the cemeteries, streets and in people’s houses. On this day the spirits take the offerings to sustain them as they journey back to their afterlife. My father would always tell me that if you looked at the sky on the Day of the Dead you could see the clouds forming the stairway back to the Mas Alla, the beyond. A lot of my art features my sister, Ivone, and elements taken from The Day of The Dead but it is Todos Santos and my departed family that give my art it's real meaning.
