10.01.2022 Recent studies have estimated that South American leaf-cutting ants have been culturing fungi for forty-five to fifty-five million years. In their colonies, specialised worker ants harvest and shred leaves to make a fungal growing medium. The larvae feed on the fungi, the mycelium is rich in protein and provides the ant with a natural antibiotic that helps them combat a dangerous pathogen. When a new queen rises to start a fresh colony, she carries with her a pellet of mycel...ium, much like a starter culture, stored in a cavity in her mouth. Like this new ant queen, guardian of the mushroom spores and thus of the capacity for perpetual food production, humans too have been bestowed with the gift of mushrooms.
