22.01.2022 Here’s another fabulous OHT who’s hustling Meet Beth JN from @thesmilestudio.bairnsdale. Beth has done what lots of us only dream about and opened her very own clinic in February this year. After 8 months of planning I fitted out a little dental clinic in my mum’s office building - it’s an old residential house turned-office in the Main Street of town. I offer hygiene services, in office and custom whitening kits, fissure sealants, mouth guards and fluoride for all ages. (I practice the therapy side of my OHT scope in public dental). I work 2 days in my studio (plus a Saturday here and there) and 2 days public. Work/life balance is of course always a juggle but we manage it well. It helps to be in a country town where daycare is literally across the road! Thanks for sharing your storey Beth

21.01.2022 Have you ever thought of taking your dental career overseas? (Pre COVID perhaps!?!) Teresa @_polished___ is a passionate hygienist who lives and works in Singapore . Read Teresa’s story here I started out as a Dental Assistant in New Zealand in 1998 when I was 18 as I had always found dental fascinating and challenging. A Hygienist that I worked with suggested Hygiene - I got into TAFESA and completed my first year by distance 2012-2013. Then I was extremely lucky to tr...ansfer to complete my second year, full-time at RMIT! (I’m now also wrapping up my studies in Orofacial Myofunctional Therapy :)) My husband was offered work here in Singapore and I found that I was able to register to practice, so it was an adventure to be had! The dental council in Singapore have a rule that overseas trained clinicians must have two supervisors to work which can make finding a job quiet challenging. Luckily when I arrived I found a job fairly easily at an expat clinic. Once I secured the job I had to ensure I did everything properly by both the Government and the Singapore Dental Council. I would say the process was somewhat complicated and at times frustrating but I received a lot of help! In the expat clinic I saw patients from all over the world. It was amazing and I loved it. I learned so much and gained invaluable perio experience. I got to see the fruits of my labour and learned to trust myself as I built my skills. Life outside of hygiene I play keyboard in a heavy metal band and I love it as much as cleaning teeth! Unfortunately, due to C-19 the live music scene has temporarily died so I keep busy with fitness, reading, dining out and snuggling my two Ragdoll Cats.

18.01.2022 Gosh we sure do love sharing OHT hustler stories and we’ve got a great one for you today Candice @thedentalhygienestudio is an amazing and driven hygienist who didn’t let the pandemic get in the way of pursuing her dream I studied at RMIT Advanced Diploma of Oral Health (Dental Hygiene) and graduated as a Dental Hygienist. Starting up my own business or little side business has always been a dream for a long time but my biggest fear was how to and where do I start so ...when Covid hit it and we were forced to be home for sometime out of practice I did a course online and got in touch with my coordinator from school who was encouraging independent Hygienists to venture out on their own. She has made a huge difference and impact on my business. I officially started my social media pages and business in May 2020. My business is THE DENTAL HYGIENE STUDIO & TEETH WHITENING. I wanted to start up a social media page where I can educate and help patients feel comfortable within themselves. I also have a passion for prevention and treatment of gum treatment and teeth whitening. My future end goal is to expand and open up my own studio where I can perform independent hygiene treatment and teeth whitening. At this very moment I am educating and selling my own branded teeth whitening home kits online and performing mobile inchair whitening. Online is such a wonderful community. I have met alot of people along the way and have also learnt alot! We asked Candice.....Do you have any words of advice for those wanting to start out? I would say its scary, its risky, your investing time and money for something you have no idea how its going to go. But I always live by " if I never tried i would regret and be left wondering what if" Thank you for sharing your story Candice and for offering to answer any questions that some may have. 10.01.2022 Well I can’t believe I didn’t know this fabulous group existed.. Until the lovely Kate contacted me and well the rest is history.. I have all sorts of stories ...to share but this year I felt compelled to tell my biggest story in the hope I might be able to support others I am a passionate Dental Hygienist who graduated in 1988. The Dental world has been very good to me all those yearsand so in this shattering pandemic year this year I felt the need to step up and help other amazing OHP’s to do something, to start something, to make a change for their future this is my story to share in the hope you may be inspired and encouraged.. the longer version in the video if you have a glass of wine at the ready. Choc Chip Cookies, Tears and Ice-Cream in Bed. How many of those teary moments above did you have during the Covid pandemic stand-down? So many things happened as a result of this pandemicJob loss, Restructuring, New rules, stress, anxiety and uncertainty about what’s in store for your Professional Futurethe dental playing field changed Well.. Guess WHAT? you are not alone, many Oral Health Practitioners are still feeling this pain How did you feel when Independent Practice was approved July 1st? Like many others, I’m sure the little bright spark popped into your head with ideas spinning around.. Maybe I should start my own thing?
