18.01.2022 On this day we formally say goodbye to our colleague, friend and guide. My heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, colleagues, and clients. As a student i...n the late 80s Paul was a critical teacher of the impact of functional and dis-functional design and construction on our fellow citizens in remote Aboriginal communities. He showed that poor design can harm or even kill. Like many others, he started my career with a strong foundations; de-bunking falsehoods and promoting a humanitarian approach. His pragmatic evidenced based approach is now core to all good work done in many realms of design beyond that of the Australian Aboriginal and Torres Straight Island communities. He stressed the need to observe, listen and work with the communities to solve issues of habitation. He was always available on the phone or email for a chat, advice, as a sounding board and for inspiration when the struggle seemed too hard. His boots will never be filled; but if we work together we can overcome ignorance, prejudice and poor governance. I will be forever in debt to him for his inspiration and clarity of thought. 17.01.2022 It is with sad hearts that we inform you that Paul Pholeros AM passed away this afternoon in Sydney. Paul was an inspirational, passionate, down to earth and f...unny man. Paul first worked on Anangu Pitjantjatjara Lands in 1986. Along with Paul Torzillo and Stephan Rainow they were given the task to Stop people getting sick. Together they attempted to find out the major impacts of poor housing on people's health. They devised the 'Healthy Healthy Living Practice' based on idea that that chances of health outcomes are largely predetermined by the most basic functions of people's living environment, such as the ability to wash. The Nine Healthy Living Practices were devised to systematically assess and fix the living environments of Indigenous communities in remote Australia. 195 Housing for Health projects have improved 7,829 houses across Australia. Their work also debunked the myth that the poor state of Indigenous housing was the result of neglect or abuse by the inhabitants. More than 90% of faults in houses were found to be due to poor design, poor workmanship or poorly installed utilities. In 2007 Pholeros was awarded the Australia Medal (AM) in recognition for his persistence and outstanding service to the health and well-being of the Indigenous population of Australia and the Torres Strait Islands. Vale Paul and our thoughts are with Sandra, his family, the Healthabitat team and his many friends. We will miss him.
