24.01.2022 "The greatness of a nation can be judged by the way its animals are treated." Mahatma Gandhi. In the extreme heat yesterday, Liam, Finn, and Thomas noticed a baby and mother rainbow lorikeet in our angophora tree, with their beaks open and holding their wings out. The boys immediately sought support from Catherine to provide a bowl of cold water. This act of compassion filled our hearts with joy.... #Kindness

23.01.2022 Last week was NAIDOC Week and as always we acknowledged the Dharawal speaking people as the traditional custodians of our land. We walked on Country and delighted in the beauty of Oyster Bay. We engaged in thoughtful and robust discussions about how our words and actions impact our relationships with each other and our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. We connected to our earth through exploring clay, making ochre and harvesting our coastal wattle seeds; read ou...r favourite stories "Respect" and "Family" by Aunty Fay Muir and listened to Jack Charles read "Go Home, Cheeky Animals!" We revisited the 3 flags of Australia and what the symbols on our flags mean; we noticed the beauty in our playground and recognised it is the season for our large angophora tree to shed it's bark and for our baby lorikeet to fly from our bird box. We discussed our responsibility to be good custodians of our land and the beauty of recycling, re-using; we delighted in supporting the health of our environment by feeding our chickens, composting the leaves we raked into large piles, feeding our worms our food scraps and splitting our native bee hive. And there were many questions and wonderings about time and if our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people co-existed with the dinosaurs and the mega fauna. Our understanding and respect for our oldest living culture on earth continues to grow. #NAIDOCWeek #AlwaysWasAlwaysWillBe

23.01.2022 On the last day of his HSC trial exams, Joshua returned to visit The Point Preschool, where he had attended preschool for 2 years, many years ago. Josh, returned to surprise Catherine, his preschool teacher, to tell her, he had been accepted into university to study to be a teacher. This was such an amazingly, proud moment for Catherine, especially when Josh also told her that she had such a big impact on his life. The children were in awe of Josh, especially knowing he h...ad attended the preschool when he was their age. They were so proud to talk to him about their play and learning and to talk about what he had enjoyed investigating and learning when he was at preschool. Catherine showed Josh the book "Our Place" which is always on our bookshelf. Josh is featured in our book and it filled our hearts with joy when Josh said he remembered the day the photo was taken and how he loved spending time in the garden at preschool. #Joy #OurHeartsAreFilled

21.01.2022 During Nature Play on Dharawal Country, this week, we smelt flowers that were blooming and then kindly shared the flowers with our friends. We explored a new fire circle and made marks with our sticks and charcoal. We clambered over rocks and discovered bees, lizards, and very large ants amongst the bark and leaves. We played movement games on our new turtle lilypads and listened to a story about a laughing kookaburra. When we finished the story we could hear the kookab...urras in the trees laughing back at us. We wondered had they been listening too? Making new friends, exploring and learning in our natural world, developing a connection to nature, and experiencing a sense of calm and wonder. It’s amazing what our natural world offers us. Nature Play is held every Wednesday from 9.15am to 10.45am, in the Green Point reserve next to The Point Preschool. we welcome children and their families up to 3 years of age. If you'd like to join us, please contact The Point Preschool for more information [email protected] #NaturePlay #TakeAStepOutsideYourDoor #WeLoveNature

21.01.2022 Made by the children of The Point Preschool and curated by The Assemblage Sisters. Such a wonderful creative partnership

21.01.2022 The first day of Spring is National Wattle Day. We honour the knowledge of the Dharawal people and notice when the wattle blooms, telling us the whales are migrating up the coast. We also harvest the wattle seeds to grind and use in our cooking. Our wattle seed frozen yogurt was so delicious and loved by everyone today. #WattleDay #BushTucker #DharawalKnowledge

21.01.2022 Today our hearts are filled with love. Our beautiful friend and neighbour, Norma, celebrated her 95th birthday yesterday and so today we surprised Norma with flowers, cards, and music. The Point Preschool was built in 1956 and Norma worked for many years before the opening to raise money to fund the building of the preschool. Norma continued to support the preschool after her 3 children attended and still to this day visits us often; donates children's books to our Street... Library; feeds our lovely Clucky Brownie on the weekends and welcomes and farewells the children families with a smile. Norma enthusiastically encourages families to spend time outdoors and play in the park that is next to her home. Norma tells us, one of her greatest joys is to hear the laughter of children playing. Norma is our dear friend and supports us all. She is the best neighbourhood watch friend you could ever wish for and also lobbies politicians to provide us with funding. Norma you are an inspiration to us all. We love you Norma. Happy birthday from all the children, teachers and staff, families. Thank you for the joy you bring to us. #HappyBirthdayNorma #Love #BestNeighbour

17.01.2022 Our gorgeous and majestic Angophora costata, gifts us her beauty, shade, shelter to our beautiful native birds, bark, blossoms and many gumnuts. This year our playground is overflowing with gumnuts. We have delighted in gathering gumnuts, weighing the gumnuts, engaging in observational drawing, printing, building gumnut towers, gifting gumnuts to our buri - our babies and to each other, making gumnut bunting, decorating sand sculptures, theorising why the cockatoos pick the... gumnuts and drop them all over our deck at our place, and investigating the seeds inside the gumnuts. Jack suggested we investigate the gumnuts on the overheard projector in our atelier. Jack then invited Delilah and Maddie to join him and lay down and look at the gum nuts on the screen and at the same time see the gum nuts on our angophora outside the atelier. Maddie said "It's like we are having a gumnut meditation and we can see them in my mind". Delilah and Jack agreed. We are surround by beauty and receive gifts form nature everyday. We have received so many gumnut gifts that Sofia suggested today that we rename the preschool Gumnut Cottage. #Gumnuts #GunmutMeditation #BeautyInNature

15.01.2022 At Nature Play today the children's growing confidence and relationships with each other were evident when Eliza suggested they play hide and seek and they helped each other to find hiding places, climbing over the rocks and behind trees. The children also eagerly sought out beautiful flowers to place in our flower press and we were very excited to see the joy and fun our youngest children had joining in the parachute games. We spent a beautiful morning in nature, hands on... and exploring with all our senses. #NaturePlay #TakeAStepOutsideYourDoor

14.01.2022 Alone, we can do so little; together, we can do so much. Helen Keller. 14.01.2022 As we explored the reserve during Nature Play it looked and smelt so fresh and inviting after all the recent rain. Rain does not deter us It is always interesting and fascinating to experience nature in all its many elements. The rain made some little puddles, changed the colour of the rocks and made the dirt soft to dig in. The children were excited to see so many tadpoles swimming in our tree trunk pond. We are going to learn more about the life cycle of a frog to supp...ort our understanding of the changes we will hopefully see. There is so much for children to learn and experience in nature and its right there just outside our door and your front door. #TakeAStepOutsideYourDoor #WeLoveTheRain #NaturePlay

14.01.2022 Wishing all our children, families, staff, friends, and community a very Merry Christmas. Earlier this year when we were thrown into the uncertainly of COVID, lockdowns, and isolation, we began to reflect on gratitude, connection, and being mindful of the many things that brought us joy and happiness. Now seems the perfect time to revisit this reflection - our Angophora Project. May we always see the joy and happiness in our lives.... #AngophoraProject

13.01.2022 At Nature Play this week many of the children decided to climb on the bush rock and trees. They took risks and challenged themselves supported by the adults nearby. Weighing up risks and making decisions whether to try something new is important for young children as it is an essential skill for life and empowers them to know they are capable. Playing in the outdoors provides many opportunities for this type of play. #NaturePlay #RiskyPlay

13.01.2022 Our beautiful Vanilla Bean and Clucky Brownie loved eating the chick weed the children and our dear Bush Care friend, Bradley dug up for them today. We love to see our girls so happy ... #BushCare #TakeAStepOutsideYourDoor #CustodiansOfTheLand

11.01.2022 Our fascination with feathers and our beautiful native birds continues to inspire our arts practice and connection to Country. We have been filled with awe and wonder as we find feathers in our playground and at home. This week we have had many noisy miners, cockatoos, rainbow lorikeets, a crow, an eastern rosella and a kookaburra visit Our Place. We have explored our feathers through observational drawing and investigated them on the overhead projector. We are learning the ...Dharawal names of our binyang - birds; and the children are very interested in understanding what our Aboriginal people did with feathers. #feathers #aweandwonder #birdsinourbackyard

09.01.2022 Today was the last day for Nature Play this term, so to celebrate we had a Teddy Bears Picnic . When we walked on Country on the reserve we discovered quite a few teddy bears in the trees and bushes so we collected them and they walked with us. We showed the teddy bears our tree trunk tadpole pond and the burrow Archer and Eddie had discovered last week. Later we had a little tea party with the teddy bears and some of them went clambering up the rocks with us and watched ...as we made ochre paint by rubbing the sandstone rocks together. Nature Play provides our children with amazing opportunities to explore our natural world and experience its beauty, the sense of calmness it brings and also its challenges as they physically explore and learn about taking risks in their play. #NaturePlay #TakeAStepOutsideYourDoor #TeddyBearPicnic

07.01.2022 There is something about the scent of gardenias that immediately takes you back to your grandmother's garden or to the tropical islands of the Pacific. Helena gifted us with these beautiful gardenias from her garden. Their scent filled our atelier with their beautiful perfume and with love. Thank you Helena for your beautiful gift. #Gardenias #PedagogyOfSmell

01.01.2022 So much beautiful sunshine to enjoy today at Nature Play. We found some very sparkly treasures in the reserve today and we wondered if some fairies had visited overnight and left some surprises for us. Archer found a burrow in a hollow at the base of the tree and we wondered what type of animal might live in there. We will have to investigate this. ... Ellie and Harper worked together to make bush stew and Harper delighted in exploring the texture of the mud. Nature Play provides the opportunity for children to make exciting discoveries about their world in a hands on way which makes their learning more meaningful.
