24.01.2022 1st August 1892 #Mornington Standard (Vic. : 1889 - 1908) Thursday 14 April 1892 Jim Potts goes missing at 2 YO On Friday last word was conveyed to Constable Moore, of Frankston, that a child of Mr Oliver #Potts, aged about two and a half years, was lost in the bush.... From what we can learn it appears that Mr Potts was removing from his residence in Skye to one lately occupied by Mr Hennigs. During the time of removing the little fellow strayed into the bush, and his absence was not noticed for some time. When he was missed diligent search was made but without success, and it was decided to ask for the assistance of the black trackers. Before they arrived, Constable Moore had succeeded in tracing him and restoring him to his parents. The child was missing eight and a half hours. 24.01.2022 1869 - On this Day - 146 years ago. John Richmond #Campbell was born at #Dalgig, New #Cumnock, #Ayrshire, #Scotland to Ivie and Christina Campbell (nee #McCaig). Many of the Campbells migrated to #Australia, New #Zealand and #Canada. Ivie was 1st cousin to my great-great-great grandmother Georgina #Rowan (died 1900 aged 80 at #Tatura, #Victoria, Australia) and is related through the #Starritt / #Stewart / #Rowan / Campbell line. The village of New Cumnock developed around an...d about the site of Cumnock Castle, the ancient seat of the barons of Cumnock that once stood overlooking the confluence of the River Nith and Afton Water. It is this confluence which may have given rise to the place-name Cumnock from #Gaelic comunn achadh ‘meeting place’. In 1650 the original parish of Cumnock was divided into the two new parishes of Old Cumnock and New Cumnock, the new parish church putting the ‘new’ into New Cumnock. 17.01.2022 Old Man Shoots Himself (The Age Wednesday 8 November 1911 Page 15) Isaac Henry Thurston, 69 years, committed suicide in Hawthorn yesterday in the a most determined manner. Deceased resided with his son-in-law, Mr Wm Parry accountant, Wakefield Street. Mr Parry was awakened shortly after 5am by the sharp crack of a discharged rifle, the noise apparently coming from the adjoining bedroom, occupied be Mr Thurston. He hastened to the room, and then found his father-in-law lying o...n the bed lifeless, shot through the head. A Winchester sporting rifle lay alongside him on the bed. One end of a piece of string was attached to the trigger; the other was tied to the foot of the deceased. Evidently the old man had laid down on the bed, deliberately placed the riffle to hes head, and pulled the trigger with the aid of the string looped round his foot. Dr Boake was called at once, but pronounced life extinct. Deceased had for years been a martyr to rheumatism. The doctor recently advised him to go into a hospital for treatment and this seemed to have affected his spirits, although his conduct on the previous night led to no suspicion that he intended self-destruction. The body was removed to the Morgue. http://goo.gl/Ba4bm0

16.01.2022 Yea Chronicle Thursday 5 February 1914 http://goo.gl/1XQzWv IN MEMORIAM SERVICE.... At the evening service on Sunday last at St. Luke's Church of England, the Rev. R. A. Scott preached a memorial service on the life of the late Rev. Andrew Toomath who was rector of the Yea Church some 45 years ago, and whose obituary notice appeared in our last issue. The preacher chose as his text the words "I am among you as - He that, serveth" (St. Luke Xxii, 27). In his opening remarks, the reverend gentleman said; "These are strange words for a text at such a service as this, a service in memory of one whose voice sounded within these walls, but has now, after years of suffering, been called beyond the vale. Yet I have chosen them with a purpose, because they seem to me to be the keynote of the life of Andrew Toomath. Some of you remember what a strenuous life this man lived when clergyman here 45 years ago. Travelling was not easy, distances long, yet he spared not himself in carrying the glorious gospel news from place to place, helping wherever he saw the need. His work was conscientiously done and I am sure those who knew him best will agree that the dominant note of his ministry was "I am among you as he that serveth." He heard God's call while a schoolmaster, and obeyed the "Follow Me,"' Yea was his first parish, and part of this building in which we worship was built greatley by his effort. Since then many voices have proclaimed the Old, Old Story" within these walls, but none more faithful, more earnest more desirous of serving their fellow men for Christ's sake than he who passed away at the good old 82. His life was a consecrated life and such should be the effort of every Christian to make his life a life of service - to go in and out among his fellows in the spirit of our text.- I am among you as he that serveth. Vast opportunities for service are open to all." The preacher made further reference to the life of the Rev. Toomath whilst rector of the Yes parish, and held his life up as an example for others to follow. During the service appropriate hymns were sang and the choir rendered the anthem, "Across the Bar." The congregation was a large and attentive one.

12.01.2022 My GGG Grandmother, Sarah Ann Escourt Wilcox was born around 1819 on the Isle of Wight. She was convicted of theft on 27 Oct 1847 aged 28 at Newport, Isle of Wight and shipped off to Van Diemens Land. She was locked up on the ship HMS Anson for 6 months Her behaviour record in Van Diemen’s Land says she was Transported for felony two charges gaol report unknown. Single stated this offence stealing plate and something else (hard to read). The HMS Anson was a 1,870 ton warship... which arrived in Hobart in 1844 landing 499 male convicts. After disembarking her 'cargo', she was refitted as a prison and towed to Prince of Wales Bay, Risdon, near Hobart, where she was moored. Sarah seemed to get into a bit of mischief but eventually married Charles Thomson on 14 July 1851 who himself was on a ticket of leave (a well behaved convict given permission to live is his life). They had two daughters Elizabeth and Matilda.
