23.01.2022 Our Mr. Murphy has been nominated and shortlisted for the Queensland College of Teachers TEACHX awards! TEACHX recognises and celebrates the inspiring work of... classroom teachers, those in early childhood settings, school leaders, deputy principals and principals across Queensland. We are exceptionally proud of Bretts achievements as he continues to pave the way with innovative approaches to STEM, particularly science. The winner of The Schoolzine Merline Muldoon Innovation in Teaching Award will be announced on October 29, 2020 where we will be in virtual attendance and keeping our fingers crossed for Brett! Queensland College of Teachers #TEACHX Have a read of Bretts nomination story below. INNOVATION IN TEACHING Thanks to the dedication of their teacher Brett Murphy, Belgian Gardens State School (BGSS) students are making a real-world impact on local environmental issues, breeding endangered birds and clown fish, snorkelling off islands and flying drones to find turtles. The primary school teacher has created the Reef BG and Clownfish Breeding Program, Endangered Bird Breeding Program and the BGSS Green Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) Project. Principal Ryan Pedley comments that the programs engage students with hands-on learning where they see real challenges for local marine wildlife and they are shown how they can help. Bretts innovative practices have invoked a sense of wonder, curiosity and awe in every student who has had the privilege of learning alongside him. His innate curiosity is contagious. The belief that students are making a difference within not only their local context, but the world, has fostered a heightened level of student engagement, Principal Ryan Pedley says. For the Reef BG and Clownfish Breeding Program and Endangered Bird Breeding Program, Brett had to build his knowledge and expertise in aquaponics facilities and aviaries. The STEM Coordinator also applied tirelessly for grants to set up the programs that are now self-sustaining. The Green STEM Project aims to raise awareness of reef ecology and inspire future reef custodians. It takes high achieving science students from a growing number of schools and has them complete a four-day program. Activities include flying drones to photograph mock turtle nests, a visit to the Australian Institute of Marine Science (AIMS), snorkelling off Magnetic Island and surveying a seagrass site for Seagrass Watch. At the end they present on what they have learned and celebrate with their whole community. Such innovations from Brett have led BGSS to be awarded in 2019 the Australian Wildlife Societys Community Wildlife Conservation Award in 2019, being selected as the 2020 North Qld Teacher Ambassador for the World Science Festival in Brisbane and representing BGSS at the 2019 STEM Teacher Symposium, amongst other accolades. Aligning English study with Science, Brett will, for example, have students design a prototype tool to collect rubbish on Townsville beaches. Once this task has been completed, there is a collaborative questioning session with fellow students, stimulating creative and critical thinking. The teacher of 25 years experience continues to work many long hours to maintain programs and to achieve best practice, but he once told his Principal that the challenges he sets himself never seem daunting. I didnt feel like there were many hurdles as I was following dreams, Brett told Ryan. He recently developed the 2020 Reef Guardians school activity booklet, which was distributed to 320 schools, and is a mentor teacher at the Boyne Island Environmental Education Centre. I have been unbelievably privileged to work alongside Brett. He takes the love of learning to another level and serves as a beacon of curiosity, wonder and inspiration. As a father and Principal to two young boys at BGSS, I cant think of a better experience I would rather give them as they begin their educational journey. Thank you Brett!, Principal Ryan Pedley says. Congratulations Brett on being shortlisted for a TEACHX Innovation in Teaching Award.
