25.01.2022 A is for: A wild and happy dance party! With Victoria back in remote learning statewide, I thought I’d add a fun activity each day to help lighten the load. Starting with one of my favourites. Each child in the family gets to choose a song and then it’s dance party time. ... The movement, rhythm and music are all hugely regulating for the body and brain. And doing it as a family will make you laugh and connect. Try it today!

21.01.2022 It’s all about perspective. It is gratitude, connection and understanding that will solve our greatest problems. Without these we are lost. I most definitely see a WISH Thank you LR Knost

19.01.2022 Wonderful free activities for little ones currently at home, from a clinic I worked at for several years when I was in the US and starting out as a paediatric OT. Great multidisciplinary team of OTs, physios, speechies and early childhood educators. Every summer PTN run a gorgeous day camp for kids of all abilities. It’s not running this year (darn COVID), so we get to see some fun ideas here. Enjoy

18.01.2022 This is what I’d define as oral sensory seeking!!! Oh the comfort of shoving a handful of marshmallows in his mouth! He just cannot resist!!

18.01.2022 One Day at a Time As tighter restrictions come into place in Victoria and the remote learning period is extended in Melbourne and comes into effect in regional Victoria, please know you are not alone. Now, more than ever before, we must live moment to moment so the silver lining there is mindfulness can take a front seat and help us through these days. One small step at a time. Grateful for the little things. ... But be sure to reach out too. Call family and friends. Text or ask for help, no matter how small - worries shared are worries reduced. Also check in with your loved ones, those you feel might need support but also those who don’t. Often the ‘strongest’ amongst us is also finding things tough but their role as the helper prevents them from reaching out. So you reach out to them. Holding hands in the darkness is the easiest way through. So while we are physically isolated let’s stay socially connected. Eventually that darkness will lift and that blue sky will be there. We just need to make it through one day at a time together. Be kind. Take care. Stay home and safe. Wash your hands. And when you must go out, wear a mask and stay socially distanced. 16.01.2022 I love this so much. Deep pressure touch and proprioception are strong neural down regulators - they activate our relaxation system to help us feel calmer. But a hug added to the mix adds so much more. Connection, especially physical connection with a loved one releases oxytocin in our brains and this my friends is like the icing on a very wonderful cake for helping us feel calm and secure. Needed now more than ever. Dose up peeps!!!

13.01.2022 Fully inclusive representation is so, so important. Just love this interview. So beautiful.

09.01.2022 Wonderful conversation about anxiety in our kids, tweens and teens. Grab a cuppa and enjoy! https://www.facebook.com/watch/?v=1680461488820242

09.01.2022 So, so excited that from midnight tonight we can resume care for all our beautiful clients in Melbourne - it's been a long year and we hope you are all doing ok. For the families that have continued with us through the lockdown via Telehealth we say well done for persisting and working with us to make the best of a challenging set of circumstances. Some of your children have inspired us with the gains you have achieved with them!!! To our families that couldn't but did take ...advantage of some calls with your therapist to support you through the changing occupations and needs of lockdown we congratulate you too and hope we helped even just a little. And to our families that had plates overflowing and didn't touch base with us but continued doing the very best you could all year, we congratulate you too. What a rollercoaster and I feel the ride isn't done yet, but am so grateful to be able to check in with our students in person - we have missed every one of them!!! We CANNOT wait to see the kids' smiling faces this week!!!

06.01.2022 In order to advance practice it is crucial for therapy goals to translate into occupation-based outcomes. This article describes an exploratory analysis of 160 ...parent-identified goals for children with #AutismSpectrumDisorder. The authors identified factors related to #SensoryIntegration hypothesised to influence each goal and then categorised the goals using the Occupational Therapy Practice Framework: Domain and Process and the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF): https://bit.ly/3hu9ikb #CPD

05.01.2022 For all parents that have tweens and teens on social media, this is fabulous advice regarding the horrendous suicide video that has been circulating. It’s important to connect with our kids and check in with how they are feeling about this, and also how interactions with their peers have been impacted. Tuning into emotions and the humanity and compassion of this awful event is so important if your child has seen this, or even if they have heard about it from their peers. 05.01.2022 This is great description of why so many of the students we work with in OT need extra movement and sensory breaks - to give them the time they need to recover from every ‘shake if the bottle’ during their day so they can go home and enjoy their evening with their family rather than have an uncontrolled explosion happen when it gets too much, or as soon as they get to their safe haven at home.

04.01.2022 C is for Connect and Co-Regulate to Calm: Being with our kids, holding space for their emotional experiences is so important to them building regulatory skills and emotional intelligence. When they come to us dysregulated it’s easy to offer a bunch of solutions; but this does not help the dysregulation. We must first connect and provide empathy by sitting with them in the muck and helping them name the emotions. ... This takes time and we must be regulated ourselves for this to succeed. But it is a skill all parents can master and is superpowerful when you do. What’s something you can do today to connect with each of your kids? Here’s Dr Dan Siegel talking about how this technique impacts our neurobiology https://youtu.be/aV3hp_eaoiE

03.01.2022 Our children do as we do, not so much as we ‘say’. So I’d add to this, Give the children love, more love and still more love; model kindness and common sense - and the common sense will come by itself.

02.01.2022 B is for: take a deep BREATH A long, slow out breath is the strongest most easily accessed down regulating tool we have. It activated the parasympathetic nervous system which is our rekax, rest and digest system. But many kids, teens and indeed adults who are in a heightened state spend much of their time taking shirt, shallow breaths and need to learn or relearn how to do this well. ... Here’s a few ideas to try together with your family. Blow bubbles: blowing big bubbles teaches us to make a long, slow, smooth outbreath. Like all muscle groups this takes practice to strengthen. Have BIG bubble blowing challenges daily and see how big you can get them. This works well with bubble gum as well as high quality bubble juice. Candle breathing: imagine your fingers are candles on a birthday cake. For everyone under 10, one finger per year if age (the rest of us aim for 10). Now blow out these candles. Again the goal is a long, smooth out breath. Belly breathing with toy: place a small soft toy in your belly and watch it rise and fall as you take 10 long, slow deep breaths. This one is perfect for every night in bed. Mindfulness breathing while you wash your hands: every time we wash our hands spend this 30-seconds feeling the warm water and soft soap and take 3-5 long slow deep breaths as you do. Stay present with the activity and imagine washing the virus away from the earth and taking long cleansing breaths to help restore the earth.
