19.01.2022 Hi folks please share, please come along. We're hoping to build a supportive group of counsellors in the area.

14.01.2022 It really is a crime that there isn't more help for those supporting a friend or family member in recovery or suffering from addiction. A difficult mix of emotions can stop people from reaching out. But there is hope. These top tips come from real people who are surviving and moving towards a better life. This is taken from work done by the excellent #Adfam who support and campaign for the families of drug and alcohol users. #concernedothers #reccovery #Bradford

14.01.2022 'Freud still looms quite large in our repertoire of explanations. In fact, it would be a very small repertoire if you excluded Freud.' As this article says Freud, who has now fallen out of fashion, did something that very few of his contemporaries did- he listened. And now his theories that trauma can be 'converted' into physical problems are being proven true by advances in neuroscience.... #WorldMentalHealthDay #Counselling #CounsellingBradford #BradfordCounselling #MentalHealth #MensMentalHealth #Psychotherapy #Freud

14.01.2022 Men will often seek help for depression or substance misuse rather than childhood trauma or abuse.

12.01.2022 Excellent post on men's mental health before world mental health day tomorrow. It discusses the disturbing statistics often put down to 'masculine' attitudes. I feel there is a change in the air, I feel more and more men feel they have space to talk about these ideas and issues. I particularly love how the article ends with very practical suggestions about what people can do.... http://www.voice-online.co.uk//tackling-stigma-around-mens #bradfordcounselling #mensmentalhealth #depression #anxiety #counselling #bradford #therapy5 #therapy #psychotherapy #anger #angermanagement #counsellingbradford #worldmentalhealthday

11.01.2022 Hannah Jane Parkinson writes an excellent article that which for me is a much needed counterpoint to the ongoing cultural change in attitudes towards mental health which risks not only alienating but shaming them for not being to accept their struggles the way the memes and campaigns tell them they should. #WorldMentalHealthDay #Counselling #CounsellingBradford #BradfordCounselling #MentalHealth #MensMentalHealth

11.01.2022 A lot of survivors can’t begin to unpick what happened to them. They’re just very aware that they struggle to hold down jobs or relationships, that they might have drug or alcohol dependency. A package to deal with those issues is needed. Article on The Truth Project, what seems to be a very sensitive approach to gathering survivors stories as part of the ongoing high profile enquiry into the sexual abuse of children. It makes an excellent point that society would treat an...y other factor that affects so much of society so dramatically, very differently. It advocates taking a public health approach which would have a huge impact on services and prison populations. One last point I'm also cherry picking is the impact one safe adult, a supportive culture or a viable path to recovery can make to those affected by Adverse Childhood Experiences or ACEs. #WorldMentalHealthDay #Counselling #CounsellingBradford #BradfordCounselling #MentalHealth #MensMentalHealth #Trauma #SexualAbuse #PTSD

11.01.2022 More than one person told me last week that they would never talk to a friend as unkindly as they talk to themselves. We can all be over critical of ourselves at times, especially those of us who have had difficult childhoods, and it can be hard to appreciate how important self compassion is to making changes to our lives. Whether it's recovering from the shame of abuse or coping with painful life transitions such as divorce or loss - self compassion is often the first step t...o unpicking many painful threads. How can we raise our self esteem when we struggle not to blame ourselves for our mistakes and regrets? This article brings together several studies of the benefits of self compassion in different areas such as PTSD and addiction recovery, as well as a suggestion to do just that: to treat ourselves as kindly as we would a friend by being mindful, kind and remembering our common humanity.

10.01.2022 Developing self compassion is the key, not self esteem. Self esteem depends on being better than others. "Your performance was distinctly average" is more likely to be considered an insult than a compliment. Self compassion is what we need when the world or failure robs us of any chance of self esteem. One of the most useful questions I ask clients is 'How would you treat a friend that way?'. Understanding the reasons why we can't treat ourselves the same way, is often where positive change happens in therapy.

10.01.2022 How many times have you or someone you know said I'm at the angry stage of loss or denial? This more up-to-date model of grief seems more hopeful to me.

10.01.2022 Watch Nanette on Netflix before reading this if you can excellent! Funny and breathtaking. An understanding of shame, and visceral rage as a positive, transformative force.

09.01.2022 "Establishing trust is a huge ask for most patients who have been damaged by others be that patriarchal culture, parents or other figures of authority. I have yet, 25 years into my career, to meet any patient whose defences in relation to the other be that dissociation, attacking, freezing, befriending or ridiculing are not understandable." #WorldMentalHealthDay #Counselling #CounsellingBradford #BradfordCounselling #MentalHealth #MensMentalHealth #Trauma #PTSD

06.01.2022 New Video Blog. Looking for a counsellor can be a difficult process, and we shouldn't be afraid to choose our new counsellor carefully. 06.01.2022 Working on trauma in counselling does not mean you have to relive the trauma in detail. Babette Rothschild (quickly becoming one of my heros) points this out in her excellent self-help book '8 Safe Keys to Trauma Recovery'. There is no reason why a person relive the details if they don't want to. For some people going over events can be harmful even obsessive. The most important thing is choice. Which makes so much sense to me when traumatic events often strip us of choice o...r will leaving us powerless. https://recoverynet.ca//remembering-is-not-required-babet/ #WorldMentalHealthDay #Counselling #CounsellingBradford #BradfordCounselling #MentalHealth #MensMentalHealth #Trauma #PTSD

05.01.2022 This article often suggests quite practical solutions for concerns men are often too embarrassed to share. Most of them are about self doubt and a search for meaning. Often exploring these issues makes a more sustainable change by raising self worth and self awareness.

04.01.2022 Wonderful to wake up to find an episode of one of my favourite podcasts, featuring one of my favourite writers and thinkers on an area I'm very interested in! Very interested to hear that Esther Perel is hosting a conference on masculinity later in the year. Some interesting thoughts about now being the time for social constructs about masculinity to be rethought.... I particularly like the idea that boys are taught to find their identity in being competent and practical. This podcast, Therapist Uncovered, and Esther's Where Should We Begin, are podcasts suitable for counsellors and non-counsellors alike. WSWB is even a good starting point for anyone considering couples counselling. #counselling #psychotherapy #WhereShouldWeBegin #TherapistUncovered #CounsellingBradford #podcasts #therapypodcast #couplescounselling https://www.therapistuncensored.com/tu81/
