17.01.2022 #NEWS: SLICK NEWCASTLE CRUISING YACHT TEAM SEWS UP NORTHERN QUALIFIER Newcastle Cruising Yacht Club’s team, skippered by talented offshore yachtsman Joe de Kock..., leaned on teamwork and plenty of experience to post eight firsts and one second from their nine races in the SAILING Champions League Asia Pacific northern qualifier. NCYC ran a thorough selection process over many weeks, using their Elliott fleet, to choose a representative team. De Kock and crew nailed club selection and blitzed the qualifying regatta for the upcoming APAC Final, scheduled for April 3 5 out of Royal Sydney Yacht Squadron. The top six finishers from the southern and northern qualifiers automatically go through to the next stage. 17.01.2022 What a way to end the weekend! We were on the water again today racing offshore as the summer sailing season draws nearer to an end. Faced with a solid 20knts S...outherly wind, and associated sea and swell conditions building since yesterday, our crews had a challenging day on the water as they raced ‘around the cans’ off Merewether and Newcastle today. Adding to the challenge, a couple of rain squalls pushed through the race track - significantly reducing visibility for short periods of time. Richard Arnall’s Corny 43 ‘Anger Management’ crossed the finish line first, followed closely by Warwick Miller’s Beneteau First 50 ‘Lumiere’ only a minute behind after two hours of racing offshore with Barry Kelly’s Archambault M34 ‘Concealed Weapon’ racing up behind them. In the overall results today, Lumiere got out in front and took home the gold in both IRC and PHS fleets - really finding their groove in this latter part of the series. 06.01.2022 As Hamilton Island Race Week comes to a close, 25 KNTS and BRIGHT BLUE SKIES set the scene for the last weekend of winter today as the Asahi Regatta kicked off ...at Newcastle Cruising Yacht Club as we contest the NSW Country Yachting Championship. Sailing Manager Jack Buchan advised that the best place to see racing this weekend will be Merewether and Bar Beach with the closest buoy just a few hundred meters off the beach! Racing commenced on time at 10.30am with a picturesque 10-15knts North-Westerly breeze which quickly built to a strong 20-25knts as the day continued. Across the line, Phil Arnall’s Corby 43 Anger Management was first to finish in both races, closely followed by Peter ‘Wally’ Hewson’s Sydney 41 Wallop. The two crossed paths all day long remaining in very close proximity from start to finish. With gusts exceeding 25knts in the second race, a few competitors came in battered and bruised. our tiller broke off down the final spinnaker run just as the next gust hit and the boat spun around and layed on her side remarked John Lattimore crew on Stampede. Natalie Butterworth saw the Stampede’s broach from So Farr, commenting we could see the bulb on their keel as it rose above the water. . . Andrew Miller’s Jeanneau 36 sufferred a similar fate that also saw them destroy a spinnaker. One of the crew came ashore contemplating medical attention after being thrown across the boat during the ‘unscheduled’ maneuver. After two races today the preliminary results stand PHS Division 1 1st Place Aurora (Richard Howard) 2nd Place She’s the Culprit (Glenn Bulmer) 3rd Place Schouten Passage (Will Howard) PHS Division 2 1st Place Brigus 1 (Michael McFayden) 2nd Place Warrain (Robin Hillery) 3rd Place Scuffy (Chris Laughlan) IRC Division 1st Place So Farr (Dale Sharp) 2nd Place Wallop (Peter Hewson) 3rd Place Inner Circle (Darren Cooney) To follow the results as we head into Day 2 tomorrow, see the event webpage https://www.ncyc.net.au//nsw-country-yachting-championshi/ . . .
