23.01.2022 The Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross celebrates the discovery of the True Cross by Saint Helena, mother of the Emperor Constantine, in 320 under the temple of Venus in Jerusalem, as well as the dedication of the Basilica and shrine built on Calvary by Constantine in 335, which mark the site of the Crucifixion. The Basilica and shrine, named the Martyrium and Calvarium respectively, were destroyed by the Persians in 614, with the Church of the Holy Sepulchre now stand...ing on the site after being built by the crusaders in 1149. Having fallen into the hands of the Persians, the True Cross was recovered and returned to Jerusalem by Emperor Heraclius in 629. Tradition says that he carried the Cross back to Jerusalem on his own back, but when he attempted to enter the church on Mt Calvary, a strange force stopped him. Patriarch Zacharias of Jerusalem, seeing the emperor struggling, advised him to take off his royal robes and crown and dress in penitential robes instead saying, "Consider, O Emperor, that with these triumphal ornaments you are far from resembling Jesus carrying His Cross." As soon as Heraclius took Zacharias' advice, he was able to carry the True Cross into the church. Above all, the feast is a celebration and commemoration of God's greatest work: his salvific death on the Cross and His Resurrection, through which death was defeated and the doors to Heaven opened. We adore You, O Christ, and we praise You. Because by your Holy Cross, You have redeemed the world.

22.01.2022 Italian cardinal and leading figure in the Catholic Counter-Reformation against Protestantism, St Robert Bellarmine was regarded during his life as one of the most enlightened of theologians around. Born in Montepulciano, Italy, in 1542, Robert Bellarmine was the third of ten children. He joined the Society of Jesus at the age of 18 before being ordained to the priesthood in 1570. At the invitation of Pope Gregory XIII he became Chair of Controversial Theology in Rome at the ...new Roman College of the Jesuits, (which exists today as the Pontifical Gregorian University) where he spent 11 years teaching and writing his monumental Disputations on the Controversies, a three-volume defense of the Catholic faith against the arguments of the Protestant reformers. Pope Clement VIII declared during his pontificate that the "Church of God had not his equal for learning and Bellarmine became Rector of the Roman College in 1592, Examiner of Bishops in 1598 and Cardinal in 1599, followed immediately by his appointment as Cardinal Inquisitor. One of the most powerful men in the Church, Bellarmine still insisted on living the life of a simple priest, continuing his usual austere life. He ate the food of the poor- bread and garlic, did not heat his apartment in winter and gave most of his income to the poor. He lived in the Jesuit community at the Roman College where he became the Spiritual Director. It was here that he met and directed the young Aloysius Gonzaga, at whose deathbed he was present. So deeply attached to the future patron saint of youth, he directed in his will that he be buried at the feet of the young saint. Bellarmine eventually passed away at the age of 79 in 1621 and was canonised in 1930 before being named a Doctor of the Church the following year by Pope Pius XI.

22.01.2022 The celebration of the feast of Marys Assumption goes back to the early centuries of the Churchs life. The feast originally known as the dormition or falling asleep of Mary, is still celebrated by Eastern Catholic and Orthodox Churches under this title. While the feast seems at first to have focussed on the commemoration of the end of Marys earthly life, its more than that. Its a reflection on the role of Mary in the mystery of our salvation, leading the Church to the notion that at the end of her life Mary was, in the words of Pope Pius XII, assumed (taken up) body and soul into heavenly glory.

21.01.2022 The washing with Baptism sets us on the way of the Christian life: renouncing all that can destroy us and our relationship with God and others; taking up the cross like Jesus day by day and following him, Auxiliary Bishop Donald Sproxton has last weekend told eight candidates who were received into the Church.

20.01.2022 Today the Church celebrates the Feast of the Most Holy Name of Mary. This feast day began in 1513 as a local celebration in Cuenca, Spain, before spreading from there to all of Spain and to the Kingdom of Naples and beyond. In 1683, the Polish king, Jan Sobieski, arrived in Vienna with his army after the city had been invaded by the Ottoman Empire.... Before the Battle of Vienna on 12 September, Sobieski placed his troops under the protection of the Blessed Virgin Mary. In the following year, to celebrate the victory, Pope Innocent XI added the feast to the General Roman Calendar, assigning to it the Sunday within the octave of the Nativity of Mary. The reform of Pope Pius X in 1911 restored to prominence the celebration of Sundays in their own right, after they had been often replaced by celebrations of the saints. The celebration of the Holy Name of Mary was therefore moved to 12 September. The feast is a counterpart to the Feast of the Holy Name of Jesus (January 3) and is to commemorate all the privileges bestowed upon Mary by God and all the graces received through her intercession and mediation. The entry in the Roman Martyrology about the feast speaks of it in the following terms: "The Holy Name of the Blessed Virgin Mary - a day on which the inexpressible love of the Mother of God for her Holy Child is recalled, and the eyes of the faithful are directed to the figure of the Mother of the Redeemer, for them to invoke with devotion." Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us!
