25.01.2022 Alayna's first birthday This little one hasn't had the easiest start to life, but with the love and care from her parents and our NICU staff, she's thriving one year on. Alayna was at the Women's for 129 days, and was then brought home on oxygen. She was weaned off oxygen just in time for the 1st birthday celebrations! ... Mum Rezwana said: Your incredible devotion, dedication and passion for caring for Alayna is praiseworthy. Thank you so much!!

Until now pregnancy loss before 20 weeks was not formally registered as a birth, or a death, in Victoria. ... Attorney-General Jill Hennessy MP made the announcement yesterday and shared the story of the designer of the certificate, Till Heike, who has experienced pregnancy loss first-hand. When interviewed by The Age, Till said: "I want them to feel warmth, and sense of compassion; something beautiful." Victorians can register their interest in applying for the early pregnancy loss commemorative certificate ahead of its release by visiting: https://www.bdm.vic.gov.au//early-pregnancy-loss-commemora The certificate will be free of charge.

21.01.2022 Baby Hinewai was due on January 3 2021 but for reasons still unknown, she came into the world on October 5 2020 - 13 weeks early. One in 10 babies are born premature and at the Women's we provide care for more than 2,000 premature babies every year. Today is #WorldPrematurityDay and to raise awareness, we are sharing some of the stories of current and former NICU patients. ... When Hinewai came into the world, she was just 862 grams - after 5 weeks in NICU, she is 1.89kg. She has progressed onto a less intense form of breathing support too. Mum, Rawinia, said: "It really puts things into perspective. No matter what they just keep going." Hinewai's parents are from New Zealand but now live in Altona Meadows - they named her after their respective family's tribes 'Ngati Hine' and 'Ngati Wai' (from the Bay of Islands) and also 'Ngati Wairere' (from the Hamilton region). They said: "Because she was born in Australia, we wanted her to know where she belongs and comes from." #BornAtTheWomens

17.01.2022 To parents Jimmi and Sheridan, it only feels like yesterday that their daughter Frankie-Rose was in the Women's NICU, born at just 25 weeks and 6 days' gestation. In reality, Frankie-Rose turned 10 last week! Today is #WorldPrematurityDay and we are sharing stories of families from the Women's who have experience with prematurity.... Jimmi and Sheridan say: "She is so bright, happy, healthy, smart and beautiful. We owe you guys so very much." After four months at the Women's, Frankie-Rose's parents share this advice to parents currently in NICU on World Prematurity Day: "Even though the experience is difficult and trying (extremely so at times), do your best to stay in each moment. Be kind to yourselves and if you have a partner, choose to pull together as a united team. Harness the joy of being able to spend time with your baby and in being parents. Try to softly accept the journey and all the experiences it entails without mentally fighting against it. Take it hour by hour, day by day."

As soon as we can ease restrictions further we’ll let you know. Thank you again for your patience and understanding.

10.01.2022 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people have occupied and cared for this continent for over 65,000 years - and there's a lot to recognise and celebrate. For some, NAIDOC Week is about acknowledging the resilience of Aboriginal people - for others it's about deepening their understanding of culture. We asked our colleagues what NAIDOC Week means to them and it was great to hear their different takes on this important celebration for the Women's.

10.01.2022 Baby Eva has been in the Women’s NICU for 83 days, diagnosed with a very rare condition called chylothorax. This condition means that she’s on breathing support and medication to ensure her lungs can develop and her blood can circulate normally. It means that she could be in our care for quite a while longer, and afterwards she’ll need surgery at The Royal Children's Hospital, Melbourne. ... Eva’s mum, Hayley Diwell, lives with her partner Nick and other daughter, Ayla, two hours away in Maryborough. , : I always try and look at things from a positive place, I feel so fortunate that I have had so much support from all my family and the unbelievable help from all the staff here. One of the hardest things about having a baby in NICU is having to leave her every day - knowing even I, her mum, can’t do every feed, can’t change every nappy and settle my own baby the way it should be. But knowing that the nurses honestly love Eva and all the babies so much makes it easier to leave. Sure, I have down times. And that’s when I turn to my support network and remember the little wins that Eva has along the way. I look around and see Eva’s space which we’ve been able to make our own, and we have built really good connections with Eva’s nurses which have really kept me going. The advice I would offer to anyone going through this is to take each day as it comes remember it’s ok not to be ok. And to trust in the people around you. I have so much trust in the medical staff here. That is what makes it easier walking out of the hospital each night without my baby girl. Hayley’s strength is inspiring, and we hope sharing this will help other NICU families in a similar position.

02.01.2022 : For Lyndall and Delaney, the life and joy in these photos epitomises the birth of their beautiful child Lilah. But it also marks the end of a difficult journey of pregnancy loss and grief.... , and Lyndall has bravely shared her experience with three consecutive miscarriages before her most recent pregnancy. The heartbreak, guilt and gloom are feelings that many women keep to themselves when it comes to pregnancy loss. But with 1 in 4 pregnancies miscarried, it's likely that someone you know has experienced it first-hand. Now that Lilah is a month old, Lyndall has been able to reflect and we're grateful for her honesty and openness in telling her story. And while everyone is different, we hope reading about their journey will give comfort and hope to others >> www.thewomens.org.au/news/Lyndalls-Story
