In February this year, 27 year old Ethan Hunter and his work colleague Mark Fenton were tragically killed on a level crossing in Bribbaree. Bribbaree is small town approximately 70km from Young. Two incredibly hard-working farmers born and raised in the Weddin Shire now a part of our roads death toll. ITS TIME TO TAKE ACTION Level crossing safety has been ignored for multiple decades. There are over 23,500 level crossings in Australia, only 21% have lights and the other 79% are classified as passive meaning they are only protected with a stop or give way sign. Over 1,000 reported near misses and 30 fatalities every year. Our rural communities are without the same safety standards as in larger regional areas and cities. Dirt, fog, overgrown grass and obstructive trees all affect our ability to travel safely on our roads. Trains are our fastest and most powerful vehicle on land. They can’t stop and they can’t swerve. They carry thousands of tones and require at least a kilometre to stop even under emergency breaking. Train drivers are stressed and unwilling participants in event they are powerless to control. With the current standards of our Passive level crossings, it is not a matter of if a train driver will be affected but a matter of when. The petition is for improving safety at level crossings by requesting: Train activated warning lights at all level crossings.
