23.01.2022 SCROLLING THROUGH FACEBOOK AS YOU WATCH TV? There has been much research interest over the past decade into the impact of social media use on our mental health. Sitting at a restaurant it would be surprising these days to glance around and not see anyone looking at their phone. You will likely see couples on a date both looking at their phones instead of each other; and people taking pictures of their food, taking so long to get the right image that the food is cold by the t...ime they eat it. Instead of being present in the moment, we are engaging with social media, trying to record life rather than live it, and comparing our lives to the constructed lives of others. Our lives are so constantly engaged with screens that it is not unusual to watch multiple screens at a time, such as scrolling through Instagram whilst we watch TV. If you want to know more about the impact of our engagement with social media check out Dr Talbots article for Hills Shire Times Mind Matters in May on social media use. http://newslocal.smedia.com.au/hills-shire-times/

19.01.2022 ARE YOU THE PARENT OF A CHILD OR TEEN WITH BIG FEELINGS? Parenting is such a difficult gig! One of the most difficult parts is understanding why your child or teen has such strong emotional responses to things that can seem minor to us as adults. And how to keep your cool when your own emotions are overflowing at the same time. Life with a small human can be hilarious, wonderful, ridiculous and unpredictable None of us were born knowing how to control big emotions and our... children will take a while to learn. This is okay time is something they have plenty of. In the meantime, the job for us as the adults in their lives who care about them, is to nurture their ability to manage their emotional responses in healthy, adaptive ways. Every outburst is an opportunity to steer them in a different direction and to strengthen the skills they need to name and manage their emotions in a way that works for them. Check out this article by Hey Sigmund that explains the development of emotion regulation and how parents can assist their child or teen to learn to manage those big feelings effectively. https://www.heysigmund.com/how-to-self-regulate/

17.01.2022 MANAGING ANGER EFFECTIVELY When you think about feeling angry or someone being angry at you, what kind of thoughts and images come up for you? Many of us have had negative experiences of anger that have led to beliefs that it is not okay to feel angry. However, all emotions we experience have a purpose and help us in some way, its what we DO when we are FEELING angry thats important.... We all feel upset sometimes its normal to feel anger or frustration at things. In fact, anger is built into our biology to help us protect and defend ourselves. Anger may sometimes feel like the wrong response to have, but it has a purpose to highlight that something is wrong. This is why its sometimes called a secondary emotion. When we feel upset, sad or hurt, sometimes we bottle our feelings up or we take it out on our friends or family. But there are more useful ways to deal with your emotions. Its about how you cope with and express your anger that makes all the difference. If you want to be more in control of your emotions have a read of this blog be Headspace below; https://headspace.org.au/blog/5-ways-to-handle-your-anger/

06.01.2022 THE LITTLE THINGS - SELF-CARE One of the areas that we covered at our recent training event was that those daily things we do - like sleep, eat and move - those things are important building blocks for resilience and wellbeing. Project Air Strategy has developed a brief fact sheet on the importance of self-care in our life, focused on those little things we can do each day to prioritise our wellbeing. Did you know that when we are stressed or overwhelmed we naturally focus on... the things that are causing the stress and forget about or dont prioritise the things that help us manage the stress in the long run, instead doing whatever we can to remove the stress in the short term? To overcome this pattern we need to be intentional with prioritising our sleep, eating and movement. What strategies do you use to be intentional in these areas?
