24.01.2022 We all 'get it'. But do we actually do something about it? It's time to check your 'busy-ness'/to-do lists/ work load, and ensure there's some time-out time included. (Note... keep the device away from you, too!)

23.01.2022 As professional educators, we often fall into the trap of teaching others, but not heeding advice from others. This is particularly true when it comes to looking after ourselves. How often have you said to a colleague, ‘slow down’ or ‘take care of yourself’ or ‘it’s not worth the stress’ and yet so often we find ourselves having an overly stressful situation affect us. We are quick to offer advice to others but tend to not live that advice ourselves. It’s time to be your own... best friend. It’s okay to take some time out and not wait to be told by someone else to do so. There’s no need to worry - the important and the essential tasks will be completed. You’ll get them done. You always do, don’t you?! The question to ask yourself is how do I want to be, when completing them? Working at my best? Or rushing, stressing and struggling to complete the task? The choice is yours. It’s when you focus on self-care that you’re able to complete tasks most effectively. See more

21.01.2022 Regardless of our title, our areas of responsibility and what we choose to use our time for, there will be times when we feel stuck. Or filled with doubt about making progress. Or that we are not good enough. Or that we don’t know enough and scared that we will be found out. In order to move forward, we need to work on judging ourselves less, and being confident and comfortable with who we are. All people want to feel certain in life: certain that we are making a difference,... certain that we matter, certain that we are seen to be effective in our role. We are ‘certainty junkies’! We crave it. Learning to be comfortable with uncertainty is an essential life skill; it starts with a deep knowing and sense of believing in yourself. Knowing that mistakes are okay - in fact, they are necessary for growth, creativity, confidence and innovation. Tell yourself I am enough. You’ve got this! See more

20.01.2022 Our harshest critic is often ourselves. In fact, negative self-talk is one of the major reasons why people suffer what is called ‘self-sabotage’. This is where we convince ourselves we’re not strong enough, or ‘good’ enough, to accomplish our goals. Or that it’s too hard and we won’t succeed. When we connect to these negative emotions, we begin to believe our self-talk, behaving in a way that moves us away from that which we want to achieve. Brain research conducted at Stanfo...rd found different brain cells process positive and negative experiences. The more reinforcement we give to either experience, the more our brain reacts and passes on those messages to the rest of our body. It’s natural to have negative thoughts at times, but instead of letting them take over, become an observer of them. Notice them, acknowledge them as negative self-talk and send them on their way. Remind yourself that thoughts come and go, then take a deep breath and focus on that which truly matters.

17.01.2022 There’s a reason we are told prior to travelling on aircraft that, in the event of an emergency, we’re to put on our own oxygen mask before attempting to help others. It’s such a good metaphor for life, yet we so often ignore the advice. If we genuinely care for others, we need to take care of ourselves, first. Over the next few days, prioritise time for you. Go out for lunch over the weekend. Read a book for pleasure. Find the place where you can truly relax. Do whatever it... is you love to do. And do so guilt free, knowing that you are no good for your workplace, your colleagues, your family, or anyone in your ‘tribe’, if you are not looking after yourself - first. It’s not being selfish. It’s being smart. And it’s necessary. Enjoy. https://www.theteachercoach.net.au/

15.01.2022 To be the ‘best you’ for others (and importantly, yourself) a great habit to form is to wake up each morning and start your day in the best possible way. (Sounds a bit like a breakfast cereal ad!) Most of us wake up and think about our job list or read emails (thanks to our phone next to us) and just start the day. The result is that we go into our day with a big ‘to do’ list, rather than thinking about who we are (our values) and how we want to be (our behaviour). The thing... is, each one of us has the choice about how we behave. Your challenge this week (should you choose to accept it) is to ask yourself each morning before you do anything else: Who do I want to be today? What’s truly important to me? The answer is not the job list, but rather, who you are as you complete it. How you communicate with others and act reflects who you really are. Starting your day like this is a wonderful habit to form. You will find that as you go into meetings, hold conversations or interact, you’ll be mindful of not just the task, but who you are being. Now that’s living. (Again, no tv ad pun intended!) See more

09.01.2022 Perhaps the simplest exercise that is good for your inner self is to breathe. Yep, that’s it. Breathe. It’s not something we usually think about, as it occurs naturally. However, this brief exercise has you complete one more thing. Do the following, right now. (It will only take 30 seconds.)... Sit straight and comfortably, let go of your mouse, or put down your device, and relax your hands. Breathe in and out slowly and purposefully, focusing on nothing but the act of breathing. Close your eyes if you need. Now add to this an image or event that you genuinely appreciate; it might be a friend, a comment someone recently made, something you completed, or something you’re proud of. Focus on that for several slow breaths, in and out. Think of how this event makes you feel. What a great use of 30 seconds! Do this exercise several times a day. Try to think of a different event, person, place or milestone each time. Notice the positive change to your daily life. Breathe! See more

08.01.2022 Time passes so quickly and to most, it feels like it’s passing faster. We can examine this phenomenon and come up with all manner of reasons as to why it feels this way (busier lifestyle, greater access to information, higher expectations of others, etc) but ultimately, the days and years are ticking by. There’s a wise quote; ‘Live as though each day is your last’. It’s quite the challenging thought and when not taken too literally, a great reminder to ensure we stop each da...y and notice the good things occurring around us. Each one of us is a part of a school making a positive impact, but it’s easy to focus on all that is wrong and needs fixing. And we could choose to compare ourselves with others and lament our lot in life, which can lead to despair. Rather, we could notice and appreciate all the good that we have achieved and the amazing people, students, events and resources of our workplace. The choice is yours. See more

08.01.2022 Last week I was feeling low about some difficult things going on in my life. We all have them from time to time - it’s not a matter of if, but when. Perhaps today, right now, you are experiencing trying times too. However, later that day I was given several amazing reminders about how to deal with my perceived difficulties. I heard Neale Daniher speak about his battle with MND, and I watched Australian Story, about Anthony Maslin and Marite Norris - parents of three children... tragically killed along with many others on flight MH17. My ‘hard times’ pale into insignificance when I compare with these heroic people. Neale spoke about how he knows MND will ‘get him’ sooner rather than later, but rather than ‘tick off the bucket list’ and just ‘do what I want to do’, he chooses to live life daily with meaning and purpose. ‘It all comes back to I’m really clear on why.’ His ‘why’ is helping others. Anthony and Marite shared that while their journey has been incredibly hard, they have learnt to cope by appreciating the little things, moment by moment - the moments of happiness in each and every day. What incredible lessons we can glean from inspirational people such as these. How often we complain about the stresses in our lives and how challenging things are. I’m not denying that they are there. Yet when we hear stories of how other people are enduring that which is quite beyond most of us who are reading this, it jolts us with a reality check. Bad times occur. It’s a given. What we do during those times is a choice we all have. Creating the habit of spending a few moments thinking about what truly matters in life (the ‘why’ of what you do) will help you stay grounded and remind you of your purpose. Even when times are tough. See more

05.01.2022 Are you being the ultimate version of you? Or are you just going through life, rather than fully living it? Or are you just too busy to think about it?! (Most people are) Right now, genuinely think about 3 things (or events, or experiences, or people) that lift your spirit, at home or at work. Get into the habit of doing so before you begin your day. (And yes - you can afford this time. Right now you are sifting through facebook! Not the most important, urgent thing for yo...u to do, is it?!) Be real with this. As you drive to work, or even as you walk into work, allow your mind to focus on these things, rather than the things you need to do that day. Then, rather just walking or driving past your surroundings, be present by noticing everything around you - with gratitude. Whenever you feel overwhelmed with busyness during the day, take as little as 10 seconds to take a few deep breaths, and be present like this. This experience will help ground you and remind you of what is important. A reminder of why you do what you do. And remember; choose joy! See more

02.01.2022 Teaching is the most important job in the world! The education of others to assist their growth and learning is a mind-blowing career choice, yet one that holds incredible responsibility. And too often we neglect the self-care that is necessary to be the best teacher, and person, we can be. My passion is to help others, in particular teachers; to maintain their enthusiasm, to rekindle their passion, to find joy in each day with its highs and lows, triumphs and frustrations. You are worth it!

02.01.2022 Is your ‘to-do’ list insurmountable? Do you often feel as though you finish the day with more to do than when you started? Feeling overwhelmed? You’re not alone. In fact, a common reason behind self-sabotage (any negative ‘voice’ you hear that’s not a positive influence in your life) is the concept that you are a failure, because you are not achieving, or achieving enough. The reality is that you will always have things you need to do. Can you live a fulfilling life even if... you can’t get everything done? It’s all in your perspective. To accept that which you cannot change. To do what you can do. To acknowledge that life is not about doing stuff, it’s about the journey - the small steps you take, every day. Each of those steps is an achievement. Focus on what you have done, rather than what you haven’t. Your best is enough. YOU are enough. Congratulate yourself for taking those steps, knowing that you are making a difference in the lives of many. See more

01.01.2022 Do you ever spend time during the day thinking about why you do what you do - specifically why you are involved in your particular field? All involved in our crazy-busy society have incredible pressures that can feel overwhelming, regardless of what we do for a ‘living’. Often, we are so busy, all we do is lament the fact that we are busy; we rush from one urgent job to the next without slowing down because we believe we mustn’t. Slowing down briefly, between important and u...rgent tasks; spending a few moments thinking about what truly matters - the ‘why’ of what you do - will help you stay grounded, make wise decisions and help you act with purpose. Spend some time now remembering the reasons you went into your rolenow transfer that attitude into your task at hand. Change the concept of ‘I must do this’, to ‘I get to do this’. Do this each day until it’s a habit. (Write ‘Replace must with get to’ on a post-it and put it in an obvious place.) Oh, and by the way ensure you slow down enough on a daily basis, and know that you are a blessing to others, regardless of your busy-ness. See more
