08.01.2022 Today’s durian misadventures Meeting Uncle Don - the Don of Don’s Durian! No, it’s not a made up marketing. And I say uncle because its a term of respect we use for the elders in Malaysia. Uncle Don has a wonderful history of exporting Australian produce to Southeast Asia for over three decades. He even tried importing Malaysian D24 to Australia about 20 years ago - with blast freezing technology. Unfortunately, that wasn’t meant to be. Stuck in Melbourne during COVID-1...9 this year, got Uncle Don thinking about trying to import Malaysian durian to Australia once again. This time using the new nitrogen snap freezing tech we’ve seen with the durians of late. Since August, he’s been consistently importing great and consistent quality Musang King and D24 XO from Raub, Pahang. He’s also doing R&D on freezing other Malaysian fruits, and has successfully imported J33 Honey Jackfruit and Cempedak. I reckon this has been a game changer for our Aussie imported durian market What do you think of Don’s Durians?

04.01.2022 More than 18 months ago, when I first started building The Thorny Fruit Co Shopify website by myself, I was eagerly populating photographs of the various tropical fruit I had taken. I tried to create a catalogue and style-guide of original product shots of any Australian tropical and exotic fruit I could find at my local Asian grocers. I did so not knowing if my little business idea was going to succeed or fail at even sourcing any of these beautiful produce from our amazing ...tropical north Australia. It was almost an experience of wishful thinking. Almost two years on, struggling to find enough supply of the scarce sapodilla, I never imagined I would finally be able to post up a product listing of this fruit on my website! Deliciously sweet, honey caramel and soft textured flesh with a pear-like grain, the ciku as I know it from my Malaysian childhood, was an uncharacteristic favourite of mine. I don’t have a sweet tooth. But there is something about the biting into a ciku that brings delightful memories for me that I haven’t been able to put my finger on.
