24.01.2022 This is the first in a series of short clips I've been working on to promote Two Trees Talking Art Exhibition, a community art exhibition curated by Terry Cooper showing from the 30th of September to the 18th of October 2020 @ Project Contemporary Artspace Wollongong. The beautiful thing about this exhibition is its focus on the value of making art for mental health and well being.

20.01.2022 On a cold, crisp, clear blue winters day much like today in 1902, the men and boys of the coal mining village of Kembla Heights and nearby Mount Kembla were at work in the local coal mine. It was hard dangerous, back breaking work in pitch black tunnels. For years the company mine managers had been ignoring the men's reports that there was gas in the mine, maintaining that Mt Kembla Colliery was not gassy, so the men continued to work by the light of a naked flame. At three m...inutes past 2 pm on that Thursday, suddenly a huge explosion reverberated across the mountain, a flame shot out the entrance burning anyone and anything in its path and a thick black plume of smoke filled the skies. The sound like "thunder in a cloudless sky" was heard from Wollongong to Helensburgh and Jamberoo. Wollongong was deserted as everyone rushed to the mountain pit top. Underground with their naked lights blown out and in darkness, miners tried to grasp what had just occurred. Some thought perhaps it was an earth quake or the boilers had burst, others in the far reaches of the mine heard no sound at all and continued on working until knock off time. These only realised something was amiss when they noticed abandoned tools and crib tins. Others who had seen the gas blowers in the mine knew exactly what it was 'Run for God's sake! She's fired!' Trapped underground were 243 workers. Panic struck, some ran straight into the gas, groups of men and boys dying together. Others realised they needed to find an escape route against the direction of the gas filling the tunnels. Most of the trapped miners rescued themselves, relying on the experience of others miners familiar with old workings to find a way out through shafts and audits. The majority of the men killed were asphyxiated by the deadly carbon monoxide gas filled tunnels as they tried to escape. That day marked the end of life for 94 miners and 2 rescuers, while 33 women became widows and 120 children lost their fathers. This is a tribute to victims of the Mt Kembla Mine Disaster, a disaster that stands as Australia's worst industrial accident. Our short film was on display at the former community keeping place, the Mt Kembla Heritage Centre, from 2008-2018 as part of their exhibition "Thunder in a Cloudless Sky". For more information about Mt Kembla & Kembla Heights history visit the web site: https://kemblajottings.wixsite.com//mt-kembla-mine-disaster This sad and terrible tragedy is marked to this day by the many headstones in local cemeteries, all with the same date, 31st of July 1902.

17.01.2022 Two Trees Talking Art Exhibition is a Wollongong based community art exhibition with a difference, you didn't have to call yourself an artist to participate. It celebrates the work of amazing inspirational humans who have, in the face of pain and struggle in this crazy year of bushfires, floods and Covid19, created something positive, something wonderful and worth sharing. The brain child of Terry Cooper this exhibtion focuses on mental health and well being using art as a we...apon. Terry teamed up with Dee Milenkovic to create a safe place where artists were able to bravely share their stories and art inspiring others in the process. The Time Capsule was honoured to support this project through a series of short video interviews including this promotional video. Two Trees Talking Art Exhibition is on now at Project Contemporary Artspace, Wollongong untill the 18th of October 2020. 17.01.2022 This year with the Covid19 pandemic and physical isolation in place many traditional ANZAC Day Commemorations have had to be cancelled. All around Australia though, musicians got up before dawn to play the Last Post in their streets and front driveways for their communities. In previous years 13 year old Jedd has played with the Wollongong Bras Band at the Dawn Service for Port Kembla RSL. This year he's playing the Last Post in his Kembla Heights yard in memory of all the A...NZACs. "They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old; Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning We will remember them." Lest we forget. 25 April 2020. #standatdawn #lestweforget
