22.01.2022 A year ago today. Gee, a bit’s gone down since then. This week I wrote an essay, not about the past year but the Great Pause and where we go now. It’s a long essay and it’ll be in our Real Good newsletter. But here’s the intro. Have a beautiful day. Lotsa love Swiv. The Great Pause. Alone. Together. What now?...Continue reading

21.01.2022 Yep. Deficits are investments in our future. In our kids. To not invest now is madness.

20.01.2022 The economics of Lockdown, Shutdown, call it what you will. The cost benefit analysis put here is clear. We might then well ask, why the hurry to return to the Old Normal? What do you think?

13.01.2022 A word on the JobKeeper fiasco. The forecast was always generous because it assumed nearly half the workforce would be on JobKeeper - 6.5m people - when we have 13m workers (see government stats below). The dollars or people are not missing, they are a shortfall in an inherently speculative exercise. The question now is what do with the $60bil? It should go into housing and tenancy, universities and the arts and small business. Also the deeper economic fallout will continue. Because the Lockdown and global conditions have damaged confidence to invest, operate and employ. That’s my view. What do you think?

11.01.2022 The most important debate in the world right now.

09.01.2022 Clive Evatt, barrister and bon vivant, went to Dubbo one day in 1950 as NSW minister for housing to put a brass plaque on a classic brick block of half a dozen flats. Why? Because the Australia of that time knew the foundation of a decent democracy is a roof over your head. It’s that simple. Used to do a lot of work in Dubbo and randomly noticed the plaque with a client. We thought it said a lot about who we were back then and who we’d become. In 2020 our government does not understand the simple truth that social housing is basic to democracy and we need to explain it to them.

07.01.2022 Early nomination for a Together Party theme song? Jack Black and Tenacious D with The 5 Needs!

05.01.2022 Stephanie Kelton. Worth a listen. Deficits need to be managed not avoided. The risk is not debt itself but inflation. Our policy focus should be ‘what can we afford’? As any household asks when it looks to buy a house. What do you think?
