21.01.2022 This is one of my "essential kitchen gadgets" for making salads. I'm sometimes asked if you still need to wash organic veggies and the answer is OF COURSE YOU DO!! They're often grown in manures and compost so they can still get dirty even if there are no nasty chemical pesticides used. I discovered this lettuce spinner when it was recommended by @maggie_beer at a cooking demo years ago. The centrifugal force of the spinner gets rid of all excess rinse water, making it easier for any oily dressing to stick to all the leaves. 18.01.2022 Anyone else tried growing spuds in sacks? I'm a bit late with potatoes this season but still plenty of time to get growing. I've got 2 varieties in 2 different sacks. This one is designed for potatoes. You just roll down the sides and plant chitted seed potatoes (already sprouting) and cover with more potting mix. As they grow and shoot through the top, you keep covering them with a compost/mulch mix, unravelling the sides of the sack as you add materials. Then the tubers wi...ll form all along the buried stems. Remember to keep the growing tip and 2 leaves over the mulch and bury the rest. 16.01.2022 Broad beans are just starting to flower now. They need a sturdy support structure if you get strong winds through. I set up this structure earlier from old and broken stakes. I made it tall but this variety of broad bean is only dwarf and won't need the height. I plan to put my indeterminate tomatoes in this bed after my broad beans finish and they will definitely need the height of this structure. 10.01.2022 Fruit flies have been a real problem in this garden. We caught hundreds in a commercial trap. Now for our homemade version. We used 1/2 tbsp cloudy ammonia, 1/2...tbsp vanilla essence, 100g sugar, 1tsp dishwashing liquid, 1tsp vegemite and 1 L hot water. Dissolve all ingredients and pour into 3 plastic bottles with 1.5cm holes around the neck. Hang in trees. Best to replace liquid every couple of weeks. Recipe taken from PIP magazine issue 18. 08.01.2022 Finding Brown. Have you found brown? If you haven't then you better!! Here's why .... Brown material in your worm farm will determine whether your castings are any good, so you should always remember to ADD BROWN materials as well as veggie scraps. Otherwise it's going to be a horrible sludgy, stinky mess. (I think we've all been guilty of that, if we're being totally honest now). I get a regular supply from these different sources:... fallen autumn leaves around the neighbours dry twigs from pruning the fruit trees egg cartons & shredded office paper bedding waste from local guinea pig (or rabbit) breeders When you harvest your castings from the bottom tray, you often still have worms in that tray, so a little hack I've discovered (and you will too if you swipe now) is to put this tray on top of the worm farm and leave it exposed to the light. The worms don't like the light so they wriggle down into the tray below. I scrape off a bit from the top and then come back about 10 minutes later and scrape a bit more. I keep doing this until I've got the whole lot of castings and all the worms have wriggled their way out of the tray. After I put all the castings on the garden, I give the tray a good rinse and then put it back on top of the worm farm as my new working tray. 05.01.2022 I got free mulch!! You can too. I got buckets and buckets and buckets of free leaf mulch for the garden by raking up fallen leaves from the neighbourhood street trees. Deciduous street trees give my community much needed shade through summer and free mulch by winter. By collecting the leaves from curbside gutters, I'm actually preventing it from getting washed into stormwater collection points and polluting our waterways.... I got a bit of healthy exercise raking (who needs to pay for a gym membership??) and the street is clean.
