25.01.2022 Winners are grinners! The Vet Group Girls (VGGs) took out the Corporate Cup at the Kangaroobie Klassic recently for the 3rd year in a row. Congratulations to Monica, Casey, Aimee and our new kiwi import Elle.

25.01.2022 Youve probably seen this image doing the rounds - and weve taken the liberty of giving it a bit of a makeover! Over the Easter long weekend our clinics are closed Friday and Monday but our on-call emergency services are available 24/7. Happy Easter from the Vet Group team

24.01.2022 Cheese! The transformation from milk to curd to delicious Camembert is a neat bit of food science. Our second #dairymonth blog details the structure of milk protein - casein - and how its converted into a curd. Weve got suggestions on how to fit more cheese into your day as well as more schooling@home ideas for parents and kids. So please have a read on our website https://www.thevetgroup.com.au/more-cheese-gromit/ 3YB FM Coast FM

24.01.2022 1-in-a-million - These photos of 13-week-old twin calves were taken during a routine ultrasound herd preg test. They show one of the congenital abnormalities that occur in cows, a schistosome (aka an inside-out-calf). The calf doesn’t develop properly in utero: the spine and legs are flexed in one direction and the organs of the chest and abdomen are outside of the body. Schistosomes are stillborn and the cow needs assistance to calve. John Ryan has done well over half a m...illion preg-tests and these images were a first. I've never seen a schistosome while preg testing before but have wondered why not every time I've had to do a schistosome calving. It would be pretty easy to miss these as the heads of the calves looked normal and at the speed we go I generally don't look for more than: is there a calf? Is it alive? Do the fluids / membranes / cotyledons look normal? If so, then I age it and get on with the next one. Also, that seemingly obvious spinal flexion we see at a calving is only visible at one very specific angle which I didn't find until after milking when I spent 5 mins with her in the crush. I had to hold the probe head in my hand to get all the photos. The thing that caught my attention was the apparent discrepancy in size between the two calves’ abdominal circumferences. This made me look closer and notice the convex boundary of the abdominal wall was not present and I couldn't find any ribs. With the farmer we discussed using PG to abort her but decided not to for two reasons: a normal twin present and the joining period is finishing soon. I rarely recommend aborting pregnancies. I have for a Siamese twin and for triplets (after sexing and finding one or more bulls) but I don’t think I would for a schistosome because although they are often difficult calvings there is usually a successful outcome, especially now that we know that it’s there" See more

22.01.2022 Just some of our vets and techs ready for work this morning Wearing face coverings - whether its a mask, bandana or neck gaiter - is not something that any of us have routinely done - it takes a little getting used to! Weve thought of some farm specific questions about wearing masks that weve answered on our website. https://www.thevetgroup.com.au/maskupvictoria/ Stay safe everyone #maskupvictoria #standingtogether2mapart

22.01.2022 A win for the month of June? Kenneth the Koala! After being hit by a car - and suffering a concussion, a broken nose and a sprained wrist- 3 nights of vet care from Westy saw him good to go. Washing basket koala cages for the win!

21.01.2022 Tomorrow is ANZAC Day and our clinics will be closed except for emergencies. But wed like to put a focus on the Australian Womens Land Army (AWLA) in a blog post on our website. These are women who were vital in ensuring food security for Australia during World War II. Does your family have any AWLA history to share? #LestWeForget https://www.thevetgroup.com.au/the-australian-womens-land-/

20.01.2022 Its that time of year when were seeing a bit of lameness. Along with early detection and treatment and track management, stock handling is also important in reducing lame cows. Have a listen to lameness guru Neil Chesterton in the podcast below.

14.01.2022 Monica and Izzy - ably assisted by Elle - delivered these little guys by caesarean not long ago. They were back yesterday for their first vaccination and micro-chipping. So lucky they could get some selfies in before Mondays mandatory mask-wearing comes in #maskupvictoria

13.01.2022 Weve had constant cases of snakes bites in dogs and cats this summer. And we just wanted to post this reminder about the signs that you may see with snake bite and what to do if you think your pet may have been bitten by a snake. https://www.thevetgroup.com.au/signs-of-snake-bit-in-your-/

13.01.2022 Bucket o’ puppies! These cuties - visiting for microchipping - are Blue Heeler/Jack Russell crosses. What would you call them: Jack Heelers? Blue Russells?

12.01.2022 We understand that people are having difficulties calling the clinic - as telephone networks are currently overwhelmed. Please read below and email our Farm Services Team if you are having trouble calling in. They will email or call you back as soon as they can

12.01.2022 In 1982, the Timboon Vet Group bought its first computer. How much did it cost -$2,500? $6,000? $15,000 $22,000? $30,000? In honour of the Heytesbury Shows 50 years at Simpson last weekend, we thought wed give a run down on how dairy vet medicine has changed over the last 50 years... https://www.thevetgroup.com.au/50-years-of-dairy-vet-ting/

11.01.2022 A couple of woolly visitors to the clinic this week! #twins

11.01.2022 Weve recently seen a few herds with Salmonella dublin infection - which is a particular strain of Salmonella that creates animals that will carry and shed the disease. Have a read of this previous post that discusses the risk factors for Salmonella and how to diagnose and prevent it on your farm. https://www.thevetgroup.com.au/salmonella-vaccination-keep/

09.01.2022 Everyone meet Nala, the 16-week-old Golden Retriever puppy who recently had a nasty encounter with a snake. Nala was playing in the garden when her owners noticed her suddenly vomit, defecate and collapse. This lasted a couple of minutes before Nala began to recover and just seemed a bit lethargic. Luckily for Nala, her owners called The Vet Group straight away and were told to bring her straight down to the Timboon clinic. On presentation, Nala was quiet, able to walk but ...weak in the hind legs. She was also shaking her head and flicking her ears and eyebrows. After a few quick blood tests, a snake bite was confirmed and antivenom was started! Within half an hour of the antivenom being given, Nala was already looking much brighter. This video was taken that night and shows she's already on her way to making a full recovery. The next morning Nala was back to 90% but had a significant amount of blood in her urine so was kept in hospital on fluids until it all cleared. By the next morning there was only trace amounts and by that second night there was none left. This success story shows the importance of acting fast if you suspect your cat or dog has been bitten by a snake. It would have been a much sadder story if Nala's owner had waited a couple of hours before giving the clinic a call - the animals that present like Nala with a history of collapse then recovery are the ones that have likely received a lethal bite if not treated with antivenom ASAP. Please follow the link below to our guide to snakebites so that you and your pet can be prepared for the summer ahead! https://www.thevetgroup.com.au/signs-of-snake-bit-in-your-/ See more

08.01.2022 Last month our own Dr Sarah Matthews spoke at the Australian Cattle Vet conference. Getting up and speaking in front of a large audience is definitely something to be proud of - well done! Sarah presented a case of leptospirosis in a dairy herd, which you can read about here https://www.thevetgroup.com.au/leptospirosis-a-case-study/

07.01.2022 Disease alert! We have just seen a suspected case of ABLD (Acute Bovine Liver Disease). This is a sporadic and unpredictable disease that can cause liver damage and even sudden death. Affected cattle show photosensitisation (red and thickened skin) of the muzzle, pale skin, udder and vulva. We see ABLD in Autumn months when weather conditions are thought to promote fungus growth on Rough Dogs Tail grass. Risk factors are prior rainfall, a few warm days and shorter green p...asture with dry Rough Dogs Tail in the paddock. Farmers should identify if they have Roughs Dog Tail present on their farm and be on the lookout for skin changes and changes in cattle behaviour, such as irritation and shade seeking. Early treatment with antihistamines +/- anti-inflammatories may help recovery. Call our Farm Services Team if you have any concerns or questions 1800 838 700 See more

07.01.2022 COVID-19/Coronavirus Well a lot has happened in the last few days! And with a State of Emergency called this morning, we all have to accept that there will be some challenges in the next few weeks and months. It is important that we all do our bit to help keep any infection rates low so that our health services can keep up. The Vet Groups aim is to continue business as usual, but we anticipate that we will have some staff shortages over the coming months. If this is the case... and we need to re-jig bookings or delay non-urgent calls we will certainly appreciate your patience! For our farming clients who may be in quarantine (such as those whove flown back in from overseas) or who become sick with possible or confirmed COVID-19: if you have animals that need to be seen, call us and we will discuss how we can do this safely, in order to avoid direct contact as per the Victorian Governments self-isolation guidelines. Similarly, if you need products for use on-farm: call our Farm Services team (1300 838 700) and we can work out a way to get them to you. If you have any questions or worries, please give us a call.

06.01.2022 Drying off cows - who doesnt love it! But seriously, the dry period at the end of a cows lactation gives a cows udder a chance to renew itself. The three minutes it takes to dry off a cow can make or break her next lactation: antibiotic treatment cures existing infections, while teat sealants help prevent new infections. Our vets and techs can help with the job - and you keep clean!

06.01.2022 Lasalocid is commonly included in a calfs diet as a preventative for coccidiosis. However we do see the occasional overdose that causes toxicity and death. Please read more on our website on how to keep your calves safe. https://www.thevetgroup.com.au/lasalocid-bovatec-toxicity-/

06.01.2022 A foggy, chilly morning - definitely beanie weather! Cows are lucky that the rumen acts as their own internal combustion engine to keep them warm

03.01.2022 The perfect silage weather is also the perfect lungworm weather. We’ve seen a number of farms with significant lungworm disease in their young stock so thought it would be good to revisit the following article on how this nasty parasite works https://www.thevetgroup.com.au/lungworm-alert/

02.01.2022 A reminder that our Allansford and Wollaston clinics are closed tomorrow for the May Races Public Holiday - but we will have vets on-call for emergencies. Our Timboon and Simpson clinics are open as normal.

02.01.2022 **Disease alert** Some of you may already have seen this case of bird flu on the news. All poultry owners - no matter how big or small - should be on the alert and have a read of Agriculture Victorias post below.

02.01.2022 When social media posts don’t go as planned!! In any case, today - the 1st of June - is World Milk Day.
