When we feel stressed, our muscles reflexively move to "protection mode" and tense up in preparation for guarding us against the stressor. When it comes to feeling stressed in the long term however - like dealing with a crazy pandemic - this reflex is no longer beneficial. ... Over time, we may find it more and more difficult to relax our body and our mind. Muscle tension can also lead to painful musculoskeletal disorders, tension headaches, and chronically painful muscles and joints. So our challenge to you this week is to just notice which areas of your body tense up & react to stress, notice where your stress is carried. Simply put, weight stigma is stereotyping based on a person's body size. While it affects everyone, it can be especially harmful to those in larger bodies in workplaces, social settings and the healthcare system. Our hippocampus (that's the part of the brain that encodes our memories) has strong links with the areas of our brain that process sensory input (such as smell) and emotion. Food engages almost all of our senses - especially smell! - and is so much a part of our culture, family, and big life events, which all invoke a strong emotional response. Put it all together, and our brain is basica...lly hard-wired to encode which foods remind us of our most happiest (or least happiest) times. 14.01.2022 FOOD GUILT | We recently saw a post about having "kindsight" - shame-free hindsight - and we immediately thought about food. Why? Feeling guilty or shameful after eating food, sometimes immediately, sometimes the next hour/day/week, is scarily common. Food guilt is associated with a higher risk of eating disorders, emotional eating, low self-esteem and difficulty handling stress. Basically, food guilt is something we want to kick to the curb ... So, what can we do? At @thewellnessworkshop, we focus on positive psychology and behaviour change strategies and goals - so let's take a look at some thoughts and behaviours we can address. The root of food guilt lies in the idea that foods have a moral value, and therefore we are 'good' or 'bad' for eating them. This idea is reinforced by behaviours - such as restriction, ignoring hunger cues, and bingeing. 10.01.2022 BE KIND TO YOU this #WorldKindnessDay Something you may hear us say often is "you can't pour from an empty cup." What does this mean? Well, give this mental exercise a go.... ... Picture a full bucket in your mind Take a large scoop out of the bucket for the erngy and time you give to work, and another one for family, friends and life's general to-do list, and the other areas of life you put your energy towards. Now think about how much is left... we're willing to bet that the amount of water in the bucket is either pretty low, or the bucket is empty! But this is the amount of energy you give towards looking after you. Pretty powerful stuff, hey? In a culture that values soldiering on and a busy life, it can be pretty tough to dedicate time and energy to putting your health first. But it is oh-so-necessary. 03.01.2022 The Observer // What if thoughts and feelings were something to be seen, recognised and then let go of? What if we didn't follow every stream of emotionally-charged thoughts down the rabbit hole? If we took a mental step back - would we be able to gain a different perspective? The observer meditation could be the difference between thinking: "I ate more than I usually would today I can't believe I'd done this I'm a bad person I'll have to make up for it b...y eating less..." and "I ate more than I usually would today [full stop]" Poweful stuff. So, let's take a deep breath as we head into the weekend. Take just 1 minute of your day to sit in a quiet, comfortable place, and practice observing, rather than reacting, to your thoughts. Try first grounding yourself in the present by thinking about what physical sensations and sensory characterstics surround your body. Then, shift your mindset into your observing self. As your thoughts pop into your head, try to simply acknowledge them without identifying with them. Allow them to pass on without an emotional reaction. This isn't easy, and it can feel a little strange, so be kind to yourself if you find it difficult.
