24.01.2022 Today the Morrison Government is pushing a rehashed version of Abbotts anti-environment bill which will weaken laws now, with promises of environmental improvements 'later'. A rehash of Abbott's one-stop-shop, giving all approvals to the states, may mean more wildlife lost & the places we love destroyed. This bill risks locking in the loss of iconic species like the koala or the Greater Glider. Both used to be widespread across the east coast, but are being pushed to extinct...ion by years of habitat destruction & the most destructive bushfires on record. The Morrison Government isnt hearing our scientists, looking at the evidence or listening to community concerns. We need: Laws that will protect numbats, koalas and dugongs. Safeguards that will stop the destruction of forests, rivers and oceans. Laws to protect icons like the Great Barrier Reef, Tasmania's old-growth forests, Great Australian Bight and Ningaloo. Will you email your Senator and ask them to stand up for nature and the laws we need to safeguard our precious species and iconic natural places? wilderness.org.au/EPBC_email_senators We cant let the government push this bill for extinction through!

24.01.2022 The Commonwealth Government should pull the bill before Parliament & retract the offer to develop a bilateral agreement with Western Australia until the full EPBC Review has been tabled. There also needs to be a comprehensive response to the Samuel Report aimed at ending extinction and protecting our globally significant places put before the public.

24.01.2022 How good is action on climate change!

23.01.2022 Happy World Oceans Daya day we honour and celebrate our amazing oceans! The Great Southern Reef may be the less well known and colder neighbour of the Great Barrier Reefbut it's a biodiversity hotspot too. It covers more than 71,000 square kilometres of Australia's southern coast. The Great Southern Reef is home to the playful Australian sea lionthe are the only endemic pinniped in Australiaand giant kelp forests.... The giant kelp forests support so much life! Sponges, crustaceans , fish , bryozoanswhich are very small animals that live in colonies and form exoskeletons of chitin or calcium carbonate, starfish, sea urchins, snails and shellfish. And it's home to some species that are found nowhere else on Earth, like the weedy seadragon. In 2005, the Wilderness Society spearheaded campaigns to protect Pearson Island and the St. Francis Islands, among others along the South Australian coastline. These remote islands are now covered by Wilderness Protection Zones within the Investigator Marine Park. The protection not only maintains pristine landscapes, bird habitat and underwater ecosystems, but also provides sanctuary for important breeding colonies of the rare Australian Sea Lion and Fur Seal. Thank you Great Southern Reef for this amazing video!

22.01.2022 The proposal to raze an additional 6,700 hectares of the Northern Jarrah Forest, for access to bauxite, will place immeasurable pressure on our dwindling native forests, Black Cockatoo populations and the internationally-recognised Peel-Yalgorup wetlands. 15.01.2022 WA's Environmental Protection Agency is currently considering a proposal by Alcoa to increase production at its Pinjarra Alumina Refinery. In order to feed this expansion, clearing of up to 6,700 hectares (ha) of native vegetation will be required. We are calling for the highest level of assessment to be conducted, a Public Environmental Review. And we are encouraging our supporters to do the same by COB Tuesday 23 June, via the link below https://consultation.epa.wa.gov.a...u//pi/consultation/intro/ The huge areas flagged for clearing comprise jarrah and marri forest that in turn provides habitat for a number of well-known and iconic Western Australian species, including the endangered Baudin's Cockatoo, the endangered Carnaby's Cockatoo and the critically endangered Western Ringtail Possum. Alcoa's own project documentation lists seven threatened flora species, fourteen threatened terrestrial fauna species and one species of aquatic fauna that have the potential to be present within the development envelope.

09.01.2022 BREAKING NEWS: The Morrison Government is proposing to immediately hand environmental protections to the states without first fixing the fundamental problems in Australias environment law and before strong safeguards are in place for species and wildlife. Learn more wilderness.org.au/EPBC-Act-review The Independent Review of Australia's environment laws released today confirmed that our environment is under increasing threat and that the community doesn't trust the EPBC Ac...t to deliver effective protection. Australians need to have confidence that our environment laws will deal with major drivers of extinction like deforestation, build resilience in the face of climate change & protect our globally important wildlife. We need a genuine & reasonable process that will deliver real environmental outcomes by ending the extinction & deforestation crises. But this shouldn't be preempted & undercut by any efforts to devolve responsibilities to the states without fixing the EPBC Act's core problems.

09.01.2022 "The court was absolutely still as Justice Dean began with "my answers are", a slight pause, then "yes". That was all we needed to know." On this day in 1983, the Franklin River was saved by a decision that defined a generation. The fight to save the Franklin is one of the most significant environmental campaigns in Australian history & it is where the Wilderness Society started. ... So many people were involved with the movement. Over 1,000 people were arrested in the months-long Franklin blockade, and many more travelled from all over Australia to take part in the protests. Today we'd like to thank each and every one of you. This landmark case confirmed the Federal Governments power to intervene and protect sites listed as World Heritage. Many of you are still part of the movement today - helping to win fights against the odds to secure a better future for nature and all of us. We are grateful for your passion and continuing support. Oil and gas fracking companies have compared parts of the Kimberleys Canning Basin to places in the US and Canada which have more than 30,000 oil and gas wells. The plan by Texan company Bennett Resources (owned by Black Mountain) is to drill and frack six wells in the Fitzroy River catchment but this would be just the beginning. They are pushing for a WestEast gas pipeline that would open up the Kimberley to fracking.

05.01.2022 Water is the new gold. We can't let the Kimberley's mighty Fitzroy River suffer the same fate as the Murray Darling Basin. The WA government is seeking to allocate water from the national heritage listed Matruwarra or Fitzroy River for irrigated agriculture.
