25.01.2022 Recent reserach shows that, at best, stretching is a waste of time. At worst....its detrimental:

25.01.2022 Congratulations to all the kids who competed so well at the Illawarra High Schools Zone Carnival, including Kate Dryden, who was the 14 yrs Girls Champion. Good luck to all those competing in the NSW State Surf Lifesaving Championships this weekend.

25.01.2022 Condensed squad timetable starting from Tues (Jan 28).

24.01.2022 The last training session for the Thirroul Swim Squad for this summer will be on Friday morning (Feb 14). There will be no training session on Friday afternoon. As a result of the shortened afternoon timetable, and because many kids couldn't swim last week due to the cold water, this week's fees will be reduced to a flat $10/swimmer, irrespective of how many times you come. Congratulations to the many kids who did so well at school carnivals last week. Good luck to those competing this week.

24.01.2022 Coach Lawrence running a busy training squad this afternoon. For details about the new Thirroul squad go to: https://www.facebook.com/groups/602298829896244/

24.01.2022 Next week will be this summer's final week of Thirroul swim squad. That takes us up to Branch championships and the Bulli high carnival. Those who wish to continue training after that should make arrangements with alternative coaches and squads. I hope that you all have managed to get something positive out of squad training this year.

23.01.2022 Congratulations to all who went in the ocean swims at Wollongong on the weekend. Best performed were Kate Dryden, who came 3rd in the 14-19 yrs girls division of the 2km, and Elise Beaumont and Erin Body, who came 1st and 5th respectively in their age divisions of the 800m.

20.01.2022 Congratulations to Kate Dryden, who won the 14 yrs girls 200 F/S at the South Coast High Schools Regional Championships yesterday. She also placed in the 400 F/S and the 100 Fly. Well deserved, Kate!

20.01.2022 Goodbye to our squad swimmers from the Hong Kong Torpedoes: Sally, Maddie, Temana, Tiare, Teariki, Abbey, Sam, Bill, Tara & Maddi. Well done!

19.01.2022 Good luck to those swimming at Stanwell Park tomorrow. Before the race, study the course from the beach to the 1st can. Last year it was a diagonal direction from the start, meaning it may be shorter to run north along the beach then swim straight out to it. Also try to assess whether there is a channel or rip that could help take you out faster. After the 'dash' to the 1st buoy to take up a good position, get into a steady rhythm that you can keep up for the next 2km. Asses...s where the current is coming from: if strongly north to south, it may be better to draft behind someone and let them take it front-on instead of you. In any case, drafting will save a lot of energy and is a lot easier than swimming on your own. Finally, after passing the last buoy you need to choose a good line through the shore break. Catching a good wave at the finish can send you past many competitors. See more

Training squad will be offerred at Thirroul pool this summer by the new coach, Lawrence Stubbs, who many of you know. Lawrence has recently returned from Europe after swimming the English Channel. He assisted with coaching the Thirroul squad last season, and has managed and coached the "Bulli Pie-Eaters" Open Water swim group for several years. I would like to direct you to Lawrence's new Face Book site, Thirroul Swim Adventures, for further enquiries. I wish him all the best with this new venture. Lawrence's e-mail contact is: [email protected] Ken

01.01.2022 The style of the squad's best swimmer at training yesterday. One word explains why Kate is the best junior ironwoman and surf swimmer in the Illawarra: dedication. "Talent is a relatively minor thing. The important thing is character." - John Olsen
