17.01.2022 Not all treatment needs to be done inside the Motus session rooms. Our client is dealing with sensitisation of the lower back from a previous back surgery. Fear avoidance behaviour over the years has led to an increase in apprehension and constant flare ups as the brain tries to over protect his lower back. Our brains can do this when we are constantly exposed to real or perceived threats to our body tissue. Our brain loves us so much, that it will elicit a pain response to ...try and protect us when it feels threatened. For us to circumvent this protective tendency, we need to help make the brain feel safe first, and then build tolerance through movement. After some breathing and core focused drills [stay tuned for this post], lower back pain and discomfort is reduced to almost zero. Then we play . Here is a single leg balance drill. This incorporates stability of the ankle, knee and hip, grounding and control of the foot, whilst loading up the glute. We then use the ball toss as a distraction tool to help make these movement patterns feel more natural. 13.01.2022 Standing Kettlebell Windmills . Whilst we here talking about your thoracic spine, I wanted to throw one more movement in the mix - Standing Kettlebell Windmills. This is more than a thoracic movement but it does demand a lot of mobility, stability and strength in that area. . On top of your t-spine, it requires you to hinge, stabilise your shoulder and scapula and will your obliques. Talk about the best bang for your buck.... . Give it a try: 1 Staggered stance with toes of the back foot in line with the heel of the front foot 2 Arm straight up with eyes locked on your hand 3 Soft bend in the knees and initiate the movement by hinging at the hips 4 Opposite arm slides along the inside of the lead leg reaching for the floor creating a straight line with the top arm 5 Reverse these step back to starting position - initiating the return from your feet and pulling up from your obliques . I also work at Cultivate Recovery where I get to assist people with recovery from sports & life in general.... 2. Why is it important to find time in your schedule to take care of yourself? My job is mentally and emotionally demanding, so its very important for me to prioritise self-care to keep myself grounded and always be 100% at work. 3. What brought you to Motus? Ive been seeing Angelo since 2018. Once I found out he was opening his own clinic, I had to check out the new space! 4. Whats your number 1 life hack? Eat good meat and get lots of sunlight! 5. How has Motus helped you move forward in your life? Motus has taught me how to train smarter and move better while living an active lifestyle.
