25.01.2022 The formative years of the #NSW #National and #Olympic #alpine #ski #racing development program - and prior to the beginnings of the #ThredboSkiRaceClub - ‘In other words the ski racers and the ski controlling bodies were encouraging the development of the Thredbo Valley to raise the standards for Australian downhill racing. It is a story that hasn’t been told properly I think. The following year, I think it was 1955, was the Olympic selection year for the Cortina Olympics i...n 1956 and George Chisholm decided we would have a proper Olympic training squad and we should all get together and get proper training. So it was organised that about seven or eight of us were invited to join this training squad to go to Cooma Hut at Perisher. Rudi Wirth, an instructor at the Chalet, was appointed the coach and I think six or seven of us trained there. Again, I don’t remember us using ski lifts at that stage. Danny Coleman had work commitments. I think he joined us for a few days. There was Bob Arnott, Bill Davy, Bruce Dyson and Jimmy Walker, who I had met in the 1950s during my first visit to The Chalet. Gordon and Billy Day ex Olympians were in the squad. We trained there and after a week we had the first championships on which Olympic selection were made. There were three Alpine Championships, NSW, the Victorian Alpine Championships, and for the first time ever in the history of skiing in Australia and the last time to date, the National Championships were held at my home mountain at Ben Lomond.’ Excerpt - Shann Turnbull Oral History - Please visit our website for the complete version :- www.thredboalpinemuseum.org.au

25.01.2022 #thredbo #resort & #Snowy #Mountains #alpine #history TONY SPONAR CENTENARY .......... personal stories ........... Robert Nylander reminisces about Tony Sponar........ I have so many stories with Tony, I will make it short..... We met skiing in St Anton Austria, where I spent the winters and Tony was a regular visitor. He showed me all the nooks and crannies of the snowy mountains, on my first visit 1972. He was still in Sponars Lakeside Inn, we skied regularly and partied. One year he organised a full, untracked powder tour of the whole main range, His skidoos had search and rescue permits in the park. In 1976 I participated in the first Alpine Hang Gliding World Championship. In Australia I started flying and introduced Tony to flying also in the main range, eventually we flew off the peak of Kossie and I let Tony go first, he later got in the Guinness book of World Records for that achievement; first man to fly from the peak of the Aussie continent.

20.01.2022 #thredbo #thredboskipatrol VALE Dr Nickel Crombie... We lost our dear friend and long time THS member Nick Crombie aged 89 some weeks ago. Many of his close friends at the high point of the pandemic were not even aware of his passing. Nick was privately cremated on 27th April 2020 - just an intimate family affair. Dearly loved husband of Beverley; loving father and father-in-law of Andrew and Gen, Sally and Andrew, Campbell and Sachiko; proud grandfather of Alec, Annabel, Hugh, Alexandra, Ellie and Sam, and fond brother of Fiona (UK). Nick was one of the principal medicos in the early 1970s who formulated the first aid Emergency Care manual which Steve Breathour was later to compile. This manual became the officially recognized ASPA (Australian Ski Patrol Association) Advanced Emergency Care Manual in 1986 and is utilized as the basis for on-the-hill patient care and retrieval by all Australian Ski Patrols to this day. Nick was a life member of the Thredbo Ski Patrol Association and a life member of the Australian Ski Patrol Association. A retired anesthetist and a keen yachtsman a member of RPAYC - Nick had a big heart and was always generous to a fault. Nick acknowledged that he was a hopeless golfer, he was much more interested in health wine and food; happiness and the pursuit of pleasure. We will miss him greatly.

Thank you #ThredboResort for the timely updates on the current critical #firestorm situation. Some good news for our #Thredbo residents including some of our #pioneers, who are now able to return back home to the village. The photos from the early 1960s ...illustrate how far the village has grown. Of course every Thredbo building is precious yet the #ThredboAlpineMuseums world-class and irreplaceable #WinterSportsCollection and many of our irreplaceable #heritage lodges remain under threat. Thank you to our courageous #Fire and Rescue NSW personnel who have volunteered to stay behind and fight during this critical period, to endeavor to save the village. Hannes Schneider Meister Cup Race Marks a Century of Ski Films... Hannes Schneider, the founder of the Arlberg method of skiing and ski teaching which became the basis of the development of the mountain resort industry, was also the worlds first star of ski films. The 24th annual Hannes Schneider Race, a ski race to benefit the New England Ski Museum scheduled at Cranmore Mountain Resort on March 14, 2020, is especially notable because 2020 falls a full century since Hannes Schneider first appeared in a ski film produced by German filmmaker Arnold Fanck, the first of a series that would make him famous throughout Europe and the world. Fanck was a devoted skier who first skied in the Black Forest of Germany around 1908. He struggled to find and refine a technique that would suit the high mountain terrain he favored, finally evolving a combination of a telemark and stem Christie. Seeing Hannes Schneider skiing in Davos with the Swiss expert Ed Capiti before World War I was a revelation for Fanck, and when the war was ended he wrote to Hannes and proposed that they work together. The Wonder of the Ski, the first Fanck-Schneider collaboration, was followed by A Fox-hunt on skis through the Engadine, and these two films together with one by Sepp Allgeier provided the basis for the instructional book Wunder des Schneeschuhs published by Fanck with a co-author credit to Schneider. Illustrated with clips from Allgeiers slow motion films, the book was translated into English (and Japanese in an unauthorized edition) and became a classic source of instructional advice at a time when there were not yet many experienced ski instructors in the U.S. Through Fancks ski films, Hannes Schneider became a household name in much of central Europe, and undoubtedly contributed to the outcry raised when he was detained by unfriendly Nazi party members in the wake of the 1938 Anschluss. Though the Fanck-Schneider ski films were not the first to be shot, they may have been the most influential of the early productions. A full century on, film remains the best medium for showing the grace and beauty of skiing, the vehicle used by the great filmmakers who came after Fanck such as John Jay, Warren Miller, Dick Barrymore, Roger Brown, Greg Stump and many more.
