25.01.2022 Florence fennel - How to get a big crop from 1 single seed

25.01.2022 Whilst Broccoli and cabbage are still great to plant in spring, its the end of the season for planting cauliflower now, but if anyone wants to try there luck and plant some weve got a few punnets left FREE to a good home today

25.01.2022 Our little mandarin tree is full of flowers again after great crop of fruit this winter. Citrus are heavy feeders so ensure they receive adequate nutrition. Early spring is an important time to feed them as they are forming new growth and flowering. I use a Fruit tree fertiliser with a balanced ratio of Npk and trace elements, as well as additional aged poultry manure, compost and mulch. Citrus like many other fruit trees form a symbiotic relationship with microorganisms such as mycorrhizal fungiin the soil to help them uptake nutrients and water so it is important not just to think about feeding the trees but also think about feeding all those wonderful microorganisms living in the soil by mulching with organic matter such as manure, compost and wood chips.

24.01.2022 Treated myself to a new deep fat fryer and really fancy chips for dinner... so off I go for a forage. Was pretty happy with my first find but then dug up this whopper, you can never make to many chips however If you too want chips for eternity we have lots of sweet potato plants in stock. @ Thrive Sustainability

24.01.2022 We have a glut of eggs and broccoli at the moment so a good way to use and preserve them for months to come is making up a huge batch of pies and mini quiche to freeze, they will make great lunchbox snacks and quick meals. For the filling I gently fried Leeks and onion, steamed several heads of broccoli including stalks, chopped up heaps of fresh herbs (lots of perrenial basil) then combined it all with beaten eggs, dash of milk, some I added chopped tomatoes and feta too also. This is a great way to use late season broccoli as once encased in pastry no body will even notice the odd bit of value added protein that is inevitable at this time of year

24.01.2022 Little peaches forming on our low chill Floragold and Angel peach. If fruit fly is an issue in your area once the flowers have been pollinated and fruit starts to form you need to cover the whole tree or individual branches/fruits with exclusion net. We sell a range of options including bags, sleeves, formed tree nets and insect mesh off the roll sold by the metre @ Thrive Sustainability

17.01.2022 Purple sprouting broccoli is in full swing now, it's a long wait for this veggie but I love how productive it is and the strong flavour, a different kettle of fish from some of the bland watery broccoli that you buy in the shops. If you have grown this variety remember it is a perrenial so leave it in the ground at the end of the season.

17.01.2022 PUNNETS ONLY $1 TODAY! Beans, broccoli, fennel, Cabbage, flowers, onionsPUNNETS ONLY $1 TODAY! Beans, broccoli, fennel, Cabbage, flowers, onions

14.01.2022 The first of the Purple sprouting broccoli heads starting to form... This variety is not one for the impatient gardeners as from sowing it can take up to 6 months to form heads opposed to 2-3 months of regular broccoli. However the taste is worth the wait and unlike other varieties that are biennial (live for 2 years) this variety is a perennial (lives for more than 2 years) this plant is now in its 3rd year and gets cut back when it finishes producing heads (usually when the real hot weather kicks in) this allows room for other crops to be planted around it.

13.01.2022 Chopping up a slightly overgrown cabbage head for Sauerkraut on a rainy day, marveling over the little tiny cabbage heads that are starting to form inside. When you harvest cabbage leave a few inches of stem in the ground and little mini cabbage heads will form, isn't nature amazing? @ Thrive Sustainability

10.01.2022 Purple sprouting broccoli is in full swing now, its a long wait for this veggie but I love how productive it is and the strong flavour, a different kettle of fish from some of the bland watery broccoli that you buy in the shops. If you have grown this variety remember it is a perrenial so leave it in the ground at the end of the season.

10.01.2022 This mornings swap and share box, come and get involved - Give what you can, take what you need. Any excess produce left after the weekend gets donated to Kira House - refuge for young women.

10.01.2022 Another sad and worrying result of the use of chemicals in the production of food. Does it make you wonder at the long term accumulative effects it may be having on the consumers of the crops too? Knowing what I am feeding my family was one of the biggest reasons I started the pursuit of becoming self sufficient. https://pursuit.unimelb.edu.au//herbicide-impacts-marsupia

08.01.2022 A beautiful big crunchy Florence fennel, we grow them all year round, they self seed readily. For big juicy plants grow in fertile, moist soil, if growing through Summer keep partly shaded and really well watered. I love to gently fry in butter and serve with fish, or enjoy raw finely sliced, dressed with lemon juice and olive oil.

08.01.2022 Whilst Slaters do play a role in breaking down organic matter in the garden at this time of year they tend to have a population explosion in our home garden and they make short work of munching through the stem of any newly planted seedling and this year even the newly emerging asparagus spears . So before planting time I make traps that are bottles with a window cut out filled with sour cream or youghut, you can see from the photo how effective they are. I also cut the bottom out of out pots to create a protective collar around new seedlings, and last but not least another very effective way of controlling numbers of slaters are iron based slug pellet - these pellets are completely safe for pets, birds and the resident bobtails and any unmunched pellets will break down and add iron into the soil.

08.01.2022 NEW IN THIS WEEK! 05.01.2022 We're pretty lucky here in the Perth hills, we can grow the humble spud pretty much any time of year. However Spring and Autumn are the best times to get your seed potatoes in the ground. Potatoes are hungry plants so if you want a decent crop make sure you improve your soil with lots of compost, worm castings, manure or an appropriate fertiliser. Ps. Who else always puts their fork through the biggest bestest spud

04.01.2022 Back in stock sweet potato - 3 varieties. My favourite survival staple! Perennial , tough, fairly drought tolerant once a good root system established (as edible veggies go) and you will always have a feed in the garden, makes a great groundcover, excellent for covering and retaining areas of unstable ground. All our veggie pots are $5.50 Punnets $4.00

04.01.2022 Some like it Hot! Limited numbers of Wasabi and horseradish plants available from @thrivesustainability 48 Citron way, Lower Chittering Open Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays 9-5 or online www.thrivesustainability.com.au

03.01.2022 Borage... Also known as Bee's Bread. Who can spot the busy lady in the pic?

03.01.2022 Mmm love a good garden pie. I always start with gently frying some onions or Leeks (which ever I have in the garden) celery and garlic. Then add a medley of veg from the garden and enough veg stock to just cover the veg, root veg is always good, just whatever you have growing, today I had some left over roast pumpkin potato, carrot, broccoli with lots of chopped stalk and Jerusalem artichokes. Add quicker cooking greens such as broccoli once root veg have started to soften so... they dont overcook, add a good handful of herbs such as marjoram, thyme, oregano or parsley or all of the above - dont underestimate how much difference to the flavour fresh herbs can make! You can add a can of butter beans or chickpeas too. I then season with smoked paprika, salt and pepper. At the end add several handfuls of strong cheddar cheese and stir through until melted and combined into the sauce. If you want to thicken the sauce stir in few spoons of flour. Let cool slightly then pop in a dish cover with pastry and hey presto yummy healthy dinner that everybody enjoys...well in my house anyway. I always make double the amount of filling and freeze a batch so I have an easy meal on hand for busy days. @ Thrive Sustainability See more

02.01.2022 Scarlet Emperor runner beans are looking pretty climbing over our beautiful arch made by @darnsies_dinkum_designs_45. Scarlet runner beans are also known as 7 year bean as in frost free climates they can die back over winter and reshoot the following spring.
