22.01.2022 **A little reminder about the power of positivity!** As humans we can be pretty hard on ourselves! We seem to focus on the negative, our failures, shortcomings, set backs etc. a lot more than we do the positive things in our life. I was recently reading about Barbara Fredrickson's study into positivity, where she mentions that negative emotions such as fear and anger constricts the mind, leaving you focused only on the cause of the negativity limiting your ability to build r...elationships or be open to new ideas... positive emotions on the other hand "foster improvements in attention, cognition and action which can help to build physical, intellectual and social resources." It helps us to be open to new possibilities and ideas which flows on to our overall wellbeing. For me personally this was a great reminder of how powerful a positive mindset can be and the importance of not letting negativity take over. In the next post I'll share a couple of quick ways you can bring some more positivity into your life! from my very talented husband and positive influence Ludo - Poppyseed Photography

20.01.2022 * This week is PANDA week * For 35 years PANDA has been supporting individuals and families to recover from perinatal anxiety and depression. The theme for this year is "Tell someone who cares"... This year more than ever it's so important for expecting and new parents to know they're not alone and they can reach out for help. Perinatal mental illnesses like anxiety and depression can be difficult to recognise for a whole range of reasons. Symptoms are often dismissed as normal parts of pregnancy or early parenthood. Shame and stigma can lead to a ‘mask of coping’. Symptoms can look different for each person. Signs may include: Feeling sad, low, or crying for no obvious reason Persistent, generalised worry, often focused on fears for the health or wellbeing of your baby Being nervous, ‘on edge’, or panicky Being easily annoyed or irritated Withdrawing from friends and family Difficulties sleeping, even when your baby is sleeping Abrupt mood swings Feeling constantly tired and lacking energy Physical symptoms like nausea, vomiting, cold sweats, lack of appetite Having little or no interest in the things that normally bring you joy Fear of being alone or with others Finding it difficult to focus, concentrate or remember Increased alcohol or drug use Panic attacks (racing heart, palpitations, shortness of breath, shaking or feeling physically ‘detached’ from your surroundings) Developing obsessive or compulsive behaviours Thoughts of death, suicide or harming your baby. There are also many other symptoms not listed here. If you or someone close to you experiences any symptoms or feelings that worry you and impact your ability to cope, please seek support. If you or someone you know needs help you / they can speak with a trusted health professional such as a doctor or family health nurse, or call PANDA’s free National Perinatal Mental Health Helpline. PANDA’s National Perinatal Mental Health Helpline 1300 726 306 9am 7.30pm Mon Friday (AEST/AEDT). The Helpline is also open from now until the end of February 2021 on Saturdays 9am 7.30pm. www.panda.org.au www.howisdadgoing.org.au

14.01.2022 * How much water should I drink per day? * According to the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine, for healthy ladies aged between 31 - 70 living in temperate climates, they should consume 2.7 litres per day. If you're pregnant this increases to around 3 litres and breastfeeding to 3.8 litres. Before you completely freak out this amount can come from all dietary sources including fruits, soups, tea etc. I'm not including coffee though as coffee is dehydrat...ing! If you're not drinking enough water you could be getting frequent headaches, be feeling really fatigued, it can mean your bowels aren't working properly and you're just feeling yuck! To help you consume more water each day here are a few suggestions: * Add some cucumber and mint, lemon or even the cold tea infusions to your water which will add some flavour without the sugar * Always have a full bottle or jug of water nearby so it's at easy reach * Create a habit of drinking a glass of water when you're about to reach for a snack (particularly if you're trying to cut down on snacking as it may have been dehydration causing the craving rather than hunger) * Have a glass of water first thing in the morning * Home made soups and broths are another great option just ensure they're not laden with salt. You could keep a tally of the number of glasses you drink per day or another easy option is to check the colour of your urine. It should be a pale straw colour if you're consuming enough water, if it's darker it's an indication to drink more water. Also take note of how you're feeling, as the days go on you might find the number of headaches decrease, you have more energy, your skin looks brighter and are feeling better overall. There's too many positives here not to give it a go!

13.01.2022 ** 2 quick ways to bring some positive emotions into your day! ** 1. A Gratitude Journal - buy a notebook specifically for this and the next suggestion. For the gratitude journal take 3 minutes in your day and write down 5 things you're grateful for. After you've done this for a few days, have a look back over what you've written and see if you can spot any common themes!... 2. At the end of each day think about and write down 1 unexpected thing that happened during the day that made you smile, made you feel thankful or brightened your day in one way or another. You could also share this with your partner or a friend, asking them to share their unexpected positive event in the day which would be another lovely thing to read or hear before you go to bed that night!
