25.01.2022 Wow! What a pleasure it has been to help this little superstar and her lovely family on their journey. Miss A was a great example in showing that timing is imperative. Waiting until the child feels ready and empowered is so important for success. Well done Miss A on completing your program - you no longer suck your thumb!

24.01.2022 Are you at the end of your rope trying to help your child stop sucking their thumb? We've been there as parents...the frustration, the guilt..sometimes the embarrassment too that your child is still sucking. We can HELP! ... We are proudly Adelaide's one and only clinic to help children stop sucking their thumbs, fingers and dummies. All run by a paediatric speech pathologist. Our programs offer children something that empowers them and makes them feel like a star. Often kids want to stop sucking but they just don't know how. We can HELP! ...which can definitely help with the mum guilt and frustration too!

24.01.2022 It started with my own little girl. A keen dummy sucker who popped her thumb in her mouth the day I took her dummy away. Her thumb was a part of her life since then. I tried everything to try and help her break the habit...bandaids, bitter nail polish, talks with dentists, psychologists, showing her pictures of crooked teeth and orthodontic appliances, getting frustrated with her, bribes (oh the bribes!)..but nothing stopped the habit.... Why was I, a paediatric speech pathologist unable to help her? This lead me to my study into the psychological and physiological causes and affects of thumb sucking and why it can be so tricky for some kids to quit. This is how Thumb Sucking Centre Adelaide was born and I feel so privileged to help your child! Book an appointment now to start your childs special journey. [email protected]

23.01.2022 It was so good to be back in the clinic today! Here are two of the superstars I saw today. Two girls on either ends of their Quit journey. One on her Quit Day - about to start the program, feeing a little nervous and excited rolled into one! ... The other was finishing up her program. Feeling so proud of what she accomplished once she put her mind to it! I wish they could have crossed paths

21.01.2022 Children can suck their thumbs for many different reasons. Often other issues need to be addressed before the thumb sucking habit. Finding the right time for each child is paramount for success. There is no one size fits all approach as each child is unique. Today was this special girls Quit appointment. She has had a long road leading to today and was all smiles to get started! She is now ready to say goodbye to her thumb sucking for good! ... Go Miss E!

20.01.2022 Ive heard it time and time again. Give the baby a dummy so it doesnt end up sucking their thumb...you can throw away a dummy, you cant throw away a thumb. Giving your baby a dummy doesn't mean that they won't suck their thumb. Often I see children who started sucking their thumb the day their dummy is taken away. Sucking for babies is normal. Each child will usually have a preference over a dummy, thumb or neither!... What we do know for sure is that non nutritive sucking on either dummies or thumbs and fingers should cease by 18 months.

20.01.2022 This is a great article from the Australian Allergy Centre about the importance of children breathing through their noses and how mouth breathing can affect their development. Have a look at your kids breathing during the day and night..do they breathe through their nose or mouths? https://www.australianallergycentre.com.au/not-just-a-blo/

10.01.2022 How old is too old for my child to be sucking their thumb? This is one of the questions we get asked most in our clinic. Sucking is a natural physiological act for babies. Its calming and helps settle the little ones, along with providing them with nutrition. ... However, it reaches a point when we want this sucking behaviour to stop...We want all sucking habits to slow and stop by 3 years old. This will enable childrens faces, jaws and teeth to grow to their full potential along with helping their speech and language development. If you are concerned about your childs sucking habit before the age of 3, it is always best to get it checked out. We have plenty of suggestions to help with your childs oral development. If you'd like your child seen by our paediatric speech pathologist, why not give us an email and make an appointment? [email protected]

05.01.2022 Reminders! For some children, all they need is a few simple reminders to stop their thumb and finger sucking habits. Bandaids have been a common 'go to' tool to stop oral sucking habits. However, how you use them is vital for children's success.... Quick tips when using bandaids as a reminder: 1) Make sure the child knows that they are a simple reminder, not a punishment. A child who feels confident and proud of their choices is more likely to succeed. 2) Have the child put them on themselves. A child who feels in control is more likely to comply and be successful. Try the simple stuff first, sometimes it's all that is needed! Remember we are always here to help if you need!

04.01.2022 A fascinating read - as a clinician who is airway focussed I always make sure I talk to parents about this topic. This is absolutely worth a read if you are parent concerned about your child's sleep, learning or behaviour. The research shows that children who have sleep disordered breathing can have eerily similar presentation to children with ADD and ADHD.... "Karen Bonuck, a professor of family and social medicine at Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York, is known for her work on a 2012 study of 11,000 children published in the journal Pediatrics. It found that those with snoring, mouth breathing or apnea (in which a person's breathing is interrupted during sleep) were 40 percent to 100 percent more likely than those without the sleep issues to have behaviours resembling ADHD by age 7."

02.01.2022 The dreaded open bite... This type of bite can be the result of prolonged dummy and thumb sucking. Not only can prolonged sucking affect children's teeth and jaw development, it can also effect their speech. If possible, it's important to get rid of the dummy or thumb before the permanent teeth start erupting, at around 5 years old. ... We are here if you need help with your child's sucking habit. 01.01.2022 Mouth breathing is often overlooked by both parents and professionals, but no matter how common it may be, it needs to be addressed. Mouth breathing, especially occurring at a young age, changes the development of a persons face. It makes their face long, chin recessed, nose drop, nostrils flare, teeth crooked, and smile gummy.
