09.01.2022 We were very fortunate to have Lorry Mignacca CEO of Talison Lithium, Phil Thick General Manager of Tianqi Lithium Australia and Frank Smith CEO of Averta...s Energy as guest speakers at the recent Engineering and Construction Formal Dinner. The emergence of the electric vehicle and energy storage system industries has led to rapidly growing demand for lithium. Talison Lithium is a leading global producer of lithium, and owns the largest and best grade lithium mine in the world, in Greenbushes. Their operations in WA including open pit mining of lithium ore and two processing plants producing lithium concentrates. As CEO of Talison Lithium, Lorry oversees the Greenbushes Lithium Operations. We are very grateful for the support Talison Lithium give to St George's, in the form of 3 scholarships, and a mine site visit for the scholarship holders. When construction on its second stage is completed later this year, Tianqi Lithium’s processing plant in Kwinana will be the world’s largest producer of battery-grade lithium hydroxide. The facility will process lithium ore sourced from Greenbushes, producing 48,000 tonnes per annum. Phil is the General Manager of Tianqi Lithium Australia, and has broad experience in running businesses in oil & gas and chemical manufacturing. Frank is the chief executive of Avertas Energy, Australia’s first thermal waste-to-energy project. This cutting-edge facility is currently under construction in the Kwinana Industrial Area, and when operational will incinerate residual waste from landfill, using the recovered energy to produce steam for electricity generation. This approach has dual benefits of reducing pressure on landfill capacity and providing a source of green energy. Frank's father Brian Smith (1938) and son Jem Smith (2012) are both Georgians and Frank is also the Project Manager for the new Rodgers Wing, currently under construction Katy Boardman
