25.01.2022 THINK OF OTHERS Two thousand six hundred years ago the Buddha taught that all suffering comes from an obsession with oneself, whereas all happiness comes from cherishing others, with affectionate love. At the end of 20th century psychology adopted the idea of positive psychology, focusing on the development of the beneficial rather than studying what goes wrong, and neuroscience in the area of neuroplasticity also came along for the ride, actually measuring and demonstrating ...this truth. So here we are with a convergence of modern science with ancient Buddhist inner science. As we all face the challenge to our view of our material world and our illusory security, as well as the social dislocation, perhaps now might be an opportune time to test out this theory for ourselves. The teachings on developing Bodhicitta tell us - "Whatever joy there is in the world comes from desiring others to be happy" Although we may fear our material or social assets being threatened, our greatest asset, our virtue need not diminish. With a simple change in our perspective, or a reframing, we can transform our obsessive thoughts about oneself, to thoughts of others. Test out the theory for yourselves, see if you feel better. The first two lines of the simple prayer of the Four Immeasurables is a great place to start May all beings have happiness and the causes of happiness. May all beings be free from suffering and all causes of suffering. Give it a go. The Buddha might be right. - Marg

23.01.2022 As we all scramble to adjust to the multitude of changes in a time of increased uncertainty, I want to reassure everyone that as promised, when the dust settles, I will be offering teachings and meditations online so we can use the new gift of time for dharma practice. It is in times like these that we really need to take Refuge in our practice, and remind ourselves of how interconnected we all are, which is a useful reflection for bodhicitta and the nature of reality. In th...e meantime, stay calm, be kind, and practice mindfulness of mind and observe as the thoughts arise, abide and pass. - Les

23.01.2022 Life goes on at the temple . . . . . Although home detention has put an end to our retreats this year, we are making good use of the time with preparations for future retreats. Wayne (the 2nd) has extensively renovated the old gompa / boys dorm to almost five-star rating, including new walls and ceiling, full insulation, ceiling fans, new bathrooms, floor coverings and a walk-in linen cupboard. Here he discusses progress with Les and jokes that now the girls will want it.... And warm autumn breezes, plenty of sunshine and two bottles of eucalyptus wool wash meant I couldnt resist washing retreat blankets, all 32 of them. So, we are ready. Hope you are too.

18.01.2022 Life continues at the temple . It is just over two years since Anna first began repainting the gold ornaments and the outside of the temple. Sometimes with other family members, or another student, hardly a month goes by when she hasnt been here, usually perched atop a huge ladder or a scaffolding.... This weekend she was here again, supported by husband Sean, putting the final touches to the columns. Instead of looking forward to basking in the glow of a huge project accomplished, she is seeking permission to start again, applying more gold on the ornaments !!!!

15.01.2022 As we all experience the varying degrees of impact of the virus, it is important to remember the worst enemy of all is our own inner enemy, the self-cherishing mind. Many of us are in self isolation, or under home detention. Others are continuing their jobs, putting themselves at risk while they keep our services running. The negative mind of poor me, how awful this is, anxiety and catastrophizing a future, is stealing the precious gift of the opportunity to transform our min...d. Right NOW. So why not wake up in the morning and think, for the benefit of all, I will stay home today / or go to my job. Then with constantly recalling mindfulness of our mind and thoughts throughout the day, keep correcting our motivation to one of virtue, thoughts to benefit others. Even if you are stuck at home, losing much of your life. Instead of singing happy birthday to yourself while hand washing, recite a prayer, correct your motivation. Every time you go to the toilet, instead of being mindful of a diminishing commodity, check your mind, every time you eat or drink .get the picture! We are awaiting a camera so Les can begin broadcasting teachings. Hopefully it will arrive this week. Marg Sheehy

12.01.2022 Life goes on #2 Les has always been willing to help me cook the 16 trays of spinach pie for retreats, so I felt compelled to do my bit to help in the garden not my natural habitat at all. Give me the kitchen any day where the worst I encounter is a dissatisfied IBS student, who is unlikely to be venomous or bite. I am happy to report that my first endeavour concluded well, only side effect is dirt under the finger nails, and I am bewildered how anyone can meditate with th...at !!! Les happily replaced an underperforming plant with two others I take it as a personal subtle warning ! It does say in the texts that a student should regard every word or action from the teacher as a personal instruction or teaching. Ray turned up with the tractor, so a machine and another bloke offered me the cover to slip away, under the guise of checking the freezers. - Marg
