10.01.2022 Please note the Fresh Pet Food Co Pet Mince product available in Coles, Woolworths, and IGA contains E number E223. This sulphite preservative/chemical has show...n to reduce vitamin content in a food, a cause of intolerance, and difficult to metabolise by animals with impaired kidney function. We also note the product is comprised of kangaroo and "other meats", which makes the meat content of the food dubious. We recommend avoiding any pet mince products that contain sulphite preservatives. Fresh Pet Food Co offer similar products which do not use sulphite preservatives. 04.01.2022 Suffering jaundice, cats Derek and Tim Minchin from Adelaide are slowly recovering after their ill health was attributed to Woolworths home brand cat food Smitt...en. Both cats have been on an IV drip and are undergoing a course of medication and steroids. Owner Lauren stated in a post on Friday Boys are very sickly because of Smitten the cat food, and Reported they both have jaundice because of the food. We understand bloods are pending, and we will update this post with further information as and when it arises. Smitten is a budget cat food formulated predominantly with cereal grains (wheat and rice) and the by-products of those grains. Cats as obligate carnivores arent geared to digest such ingredients, which if fed over an extended period may result in a number of health issues. We do not recommend feeding Woolworths Smitten, or their cheaper version Woolworths Essentials, to your cat. The same applies to other budget cat foods formulated with excessive grains and grain by-products. Cats are carnivores https://www.petfoodreviews.com.au//smitten-woolworths-hom/

03.01.2022 Warning - Pet Grade Mince & Preservatives If you feed pet mince please read carefully. This GSD suffered a nasty reaction having eaten a product ironically... named "Australia's Finest RAW", a pet grade meat product containing preservative 223. Preservative 223 (and other 22X sulphite preservatives) are found in many raw mince/meat pet foods and can trigger severe neurological conditions in cats and dogs as well as inhibit vitamin B/thiamine absorption. Despite health implications, it's still legal in Australia to use these preservatives. Many pet meats have been independently tested to have extremely high doses of these sulphites (one supermarket product tested 435 times more than stated on the label). The risk is tenfold when these products are fed to pets continuously, day after day. Whether the GSD pictured had a reaction to the sulphites or something else in the product is inconclusive, but we should all be aware of the risks of feeding these pet-grade meat pet foods. This 2011 article on News.com.au highlights how many years these preservatives have been allowed in pet foods despite the risks - https://www.news.com.au///4f912d7187490e5b4716ee589d66104a https://www.petfoodreviews.com.au//v-i-p-pet-mince-preser/
