25.01.2022 Post your vote by 6pm tonight or you'll miss out!

25.01.2022 I share Maddy's wishes for an easy fast and a meaningful Yom Kippur for the community.

24.01.2022 I seem to be getting some advice - should I go with this look?

23.01.2022 Port Phillip lags behind many other local government areas when it comes to greening and canopy cover. While it will be a challenge to become a leading green city, I think it's worth it to seize this opportunity.

22.01.2022 With the election over but for the counting, now's a good time to reflect on what we've achieved. In the middle of a pandemic, and against a colossal spending effort by the conservatives, we have run a hell of a campaign. Where we couldn't doorknock, we made thousands and thousands of calls. We left voicemails, we chatted to people and changed their vote. ... Where we couldn't hold street stalls, we letterboxed homes across Port Phillip, with information about our vision and our plan. We did this with volunteers, and with money raised in small individual donations from across our community. We refused to take donations from property developers. While the Libs and RoPP have spent well over $100,000 (an unprecented figure in Port Phillip Council elections), attempting to buy seats on Council, we have spent our time building connections in community, and building support for a progressive Council that takes care of people. While the conservatives threw out catchphrases and the myth that we can cut rates without cutting services, we were honest with the community, presenting a positive vision for our city. While "celebrity" candidates with no achievements and no support have had to pay companies to deliver their leaflets, we have mobilised an army of volunteers from our own community. Our campaign is a grassroots community campaign. Thousands of people across Port Phillip support our aims, and have shown that support this year. Money can buy a lot in an election, it's true. But from the beginning, we have had people power, to pit against the big bucks of the conservatives. And we should all be very proud of what a community can achieve. While we wait for the results to come in, let's take a short rest before we tackle the next challenge of the next four years on Council.

19.01.2022 I will accerelate the greening and de-paving of our city, to provide everyone with a healthy and beautiful local environment.

16.01.2022 It'd good to see the State government finally investing in public and social housing in Victoria. It's important that these dwellings are kept in perpetuity for the purpose of housing vulnerable people, and aren't sold off. Council has always been willing and ready to work with the State to house disadvantaged and vulnerable people, so I'm sure the new Council will soon be having discussions about our next steps in this area.

15.01.2022 The Port Phillip BUG Inc have released their analysis of candidates for the election, and I’m proud to be the only candidate in Canal Ward given a Highly Recommended rating. Click through to read more about what candidates are supporting healthy active transport.

15.01.2022 When your postal ballot arrives, vote [1] Tim Baxter for climate action, and a caring, connected community.

14.01.2022 One of the actions in Council's Sustainability Strategy is to facilitate groups of residents in bulk-buying solar panels, giving a big discount for residents. I commit to continuing and expanding this program, to try and get as many roofs as possible in Port Phillip covered in clean energy generating solar panels!

13.01.2022 Good luck to all the parents taking their kids back to childcare or kinder today. The silence in this house is deafening without my little one!

13.01.2022 Give some love to your trans friends :)

11.01.2022 "Mayor Ada Colau announced that 21 streets in Barcelona’s Eixample district will become a kind of super-superblock vehicle traffic will only be permitted around the perimeter, leaving streets within the district only accessible by motor vehicle to residents, essential services or deliveries. By all-but-barring cars, Barcelona will free up space for 21 new pedestrian plazas at intersections." What do you think of this concept? Are there places in our neighbourhoods that you think could benefit from being made "accessible by motor vehicle (only) to residents, essential services or deliveries"?

11.01.2022 The Liberal party continues to be a racist dumpster fire, I see.

11.01.2022 While 6 current Councillors are re-contesting this election, 3 of them are retiring, and I'd like to take the opportunity now to talk a bit about them. I'll start with my good friend Ogy Simic, who has been a wonderful colleague and a massive advocate for people who are forgotten by governments all over Australia. He has been strong on housing for the most vulnerable, support for refugees and asylum seekers, and has supported me as a colleague and a friend as we have fought t...o make Port Phillip a more sustainable and fair place for all. You're a legend, Ogy, and your work in refugee advocacy is and will continue to be inspiring. David Brand, Councillor for Lake Ward, Port Phillip., serving with you over the past 4 years has been an honour. I've learned a lot from you about heritage and about design, and I've always admired your ability to consider all sides of a question thoroughly before arriving at a decision, and you've always been so good at consulting widely on every question. You're a very smart guy and I hope you will continue to serve the city as a private citizen through great advice and knowledge. Bernadene Voss, Mayor, City of Port Phillip we've worked together for 4 years, but our relationship over the past year as Mayor and Deputy Mayor has been very rewarding and strong. There have been many times when we've disagreed, but I've always admired your ability to disagree without being disagreeable. You have represented your community fiercely and without fear. You should be proud of what you've achieved. These are just some short words, but I hope it lets people know that Council is, normally, a collaborative environment where personal relationships are so important. We can achieve so much when we reach across party lines.

11.01.2022 I’m happy to announce that I’ve been re-elected as your Greens councillor for Canal ward, and Kat Copsey has been re-elected in Lake Ward. This is the first time Greens have been gained a second term on Port Phillip council! Run during the climate crisis and a global pandemic, this was an election campaign like no other. I was sorry to miss out on the experience of connecting with people in our community face-to-face but valued the chats I had with locals on the phone instead.... I have to admit, as a father of two young kids, the lockdown period pushed me well beyond my limits. I've never had to be a home school teacher, kindergarten teacher and entertainer while also working a job and being a Councillor. And campaigning! With a very different mix of candidates running in Canal ward, postal voting for the first time in Port Phillip and a different mix of candidates, this election was always going to be unpredictable. Progressive candidates got a strong vote share in this ward, resulting in two progressive candidates elected. I extend my congratulations to Louise Crawford and to Rhonda Clark, who campaigned hard. We may have shared goals and we may have differences, but I look forward to working with you to do our best for the people in our community. I also want to thank Dick Gross for his service to our community, and wish him well in the future. I will miss our chats. Thanks also to all that ran, including Maddy Blay and Lesley Pianella who ran excellent campaigns as strong young women. You both have bright futures. And for those that have supported me over the years, thank you. And thank you for once again for putting your faith in me as your local Greens councillor - let’s do this!

10.01.2022 Residents have a clear choice this election - a COVID recovery through strong Council services and support, or further pain through cuts to our essential services. I will always stand up for strong Council services to support our community through a COVID recovery.

10.01.2022 We can change the planning rules to make our city more sustainable. What we need at the moment is more Councillors willing to push for it.

09.01.2022 Beware of politicians claiming wins they didn't earn.

09.01.2022 3 of the 10 most affected postcodes are not just in the City of Port Phillip, but specifically in Canal Ward. Our community has been hit hard by the impact of this pandemic and lockdown, but also by the cuts to the lifeline they should have access to. Obviously Council can't offset these cuts directly, but we need to step up with supporting existing and new council programs and services to support our community as they're doing it tough. Now is not the time for cuts and austerity. Now's the time to invest in our community.

06.01.2022 Tune in to the final Council meeting of the year!

06.01.2022 Like most people, the sight of huge crowds of unmasked people on St Kilda beach last night made me sick to my stomach. Victorians have been through so much pain to get to a point where we almost have this virus under control. So many people did the right thing last night and either stayed home or had a socially distanced picnic with fewer than 5 people. I really hope the selfish actions of people last night don't end up increasing infections. That would be devastating for all... of us who are breaking our backs to try to have a somewhat normal December to spend with our families. I'm hoping for cold weather for the next few weeks, as nothing else seems to deter these irresponsible people.

05.01.2022 We dodged a bullet when we stopped some Councillors from privatising our Council-run childcare. We've also managed to get extra funding for social housing through. Both of these decisions came down to a very slim margin. I will always defend Council-run services that support and strengthen our community.

04.01.2022 Progressive Port Phillip has given a rating to all candidates in Canal Ward, and I've achieved the highest rating of all candidates across their categories of business, culture, finance, governance, services, environment and planning. Click through to the link to have a look at their scorecard and learn more about the candidates.

03.01.2022 Sharing my plan again. Some candidates have shared some pretty wild ideas. Mine are sensible and based on a knowledge of how Council can best meet the needs of our community.

03.01.2022 Watch out for this one - Maddy is a future leader for sure.

02.01.2022 Planning on a big weekend? You can support your local businesses by eating, drinking, shopping and more, right in your own backyard. Balaclava has a lot to offer, so let's offer something back :)

01.01.2022 It’s an honour to serve another term on Council. I’ll continue to fight for local action on climate change, and a sustainable and fair city, where we take care of everyone. I do want to thank the voters for putting their faith in me for another term, and to all the volunteers that put in countless hours to let voters know about our vision for the city. I’d also like to thank my family, especially my wife Yoko, for all the support you’ve given me over the past four years as ...Councillor. Being a Councillor is a hard job, but in many ways being the spouse of a Councillor is just as hard. The challenges we face as a community are daunting. The climate emergency will continue to impact on our residents, as will the pandemic, which I hope we can begin a strong recovery from. But I know that with strong leadership, and a focus on people, we can meet those challenges, and overcome them. We have to.
