24.01.2022 There's a lot competing for attention down at Sydney's Circular Quay. Here the tall lunar lantern designed by Guan Wei (a dragon with a little boy on its tongue - he retrieved a ring from its mouth, enabling the dragon to spit again, that is, bring rain) looks out over Holland America Line's MS Noordam cruise ship, which melds with the sails of the Opera House. The lunar lanterns will be on display for one more week. Let's hope the rain comes! And may your lunar year be filled with blessings. . . 23.01.2022 Day 6 of our photo series to distract people from the 'Corona Walrus'. This is from Santiago in Chile. Having explored Cerro Santa Lucia on my first day (see bit.ly/Santiago-TTW), I then wanted to explore the much bigger Cerro San Cristóbal, taking the cable car up to the mountain. It was a sunny, hot day and after taking in the views at the lookouts and cafes near the Virgin of the Immaculate Conception, I headed off for the Piscina Antilén, "a large public swimming pool wit...h mountain view", where I planned to lounge in the sun like a lazy walrus. It was a bloody long walk up and down some steep hills, and much to my dismay, when I got to the pool it was closed - it had already shut for the autumn and winter seasons. So rather than going back to the cable car, I took another route down the mountain to the city centre. It was in one of Santiago's many green spaces, Parque Forestal, that I saw these kids mucking around on the Fuente Alemana (German Fountain). I was tired, hungry and grumpy, but their antics cheered me up. It just goes to show that to have fun, we don't need gadgets or expensive things, just a bit of green space, swimming trunks and some water. But a grand statue cum fountain helps! . . 20.01.2022 How would you like to steer a ship around the world? Time To Wander is travelling around southern Australia on board Cruise and Maritime Voyages' ship Vasco da Gama, and we were treated to a tour of the bridge. Here the Captain, Michail Smyrnaios, tells us how a modern ship works. We are at Wallaroo on South Australia's Yorke Peninsula. Apparently it's a tricky port to berth in because the water is quite shallow.

20.01.2022 We've been individually challenged to "break up the virus talk by selecting an image from our travel pictures that has had an impact on us and post it without explanation," one pic a day for 10 days. But people want explanations! So here they are. This is Genipabu beach in Rio Grande do Norte, the place that cemented my love for Brazil. To get to it you have to hire a dune buggy, with a certified driver, and go on a joyous roller-coaster ride up and down some of the ta...llest dunes in Brazil. At the peak the views stretch 30km to the state capital Natal and its other famous dune at Ponte Negra beach. The region is so beautiful and peaceful that as I took it all in I felt great sadness at the thought of having to leave. Look at the shack down at the water - what a great spot to have lunch and a few caipirinhas! (Bernard O'Shea's Day I pic.) 19.01.2022 Number 7 in the series of travel pics that we are fond of is from the massive castle at eský Krumlov in the Czech Republic. I had won an air ticket to Prague at a tourism event in Sydney showcasing that country as well as Poland, Hungary and Slovakia, and was excited to be able to visit all four countries for the first time (stories are on our website). Prague is a great city and hogs the limelight but eský Krumlov is equally striking, and far more serene - it has a population of about 15,000. It's well worth the 170km journey from the capital and an overnight stay is must. . . Visit Czech Republic Cesky Krumlov #Czech #CeskyKrumlov #castle #TTW EUROPE (visiteurope.com)

17.01.2022 Yes we know that rats aren't always adorable creatures, but we are now in The Year of The Rat, and at least one of the Time To Wander team (the one who scoffs all the cheese at parties) is a Rat according to the Chinese horoscope charts, so let's have some respect for okay . 14.01.2022 Pic 4 of our 10-pic challenge. Bratislava, Slovakia. On my first afternoon in the city I'd been exploring the old town and was taking a different route back to my hotel, only to find myself in a rather grim residential area (although the apartment interiors could have been lovely, for all I know). I felt uneasy and back-tracked a little, and lo and behold, there in front of me was the city's famous 'Blue Church'. My unease turned to joy: it had been top on my list of things to see the next day - I thought it was much further away. I ended up really liking Bratislava - . see bit.ly/Bratislava-TTW . 12.01.2022 Day 5 of our 10-day series of meaningful travel pics. This was my last day in Manaus, Brazil, but my first look at the awesome Amazon River. I'd arrived with two TTW colleagues, who set off for an jungle adventure (see bit.ly/Amazon-TTW) while I stayed behind in Manaus to do a different journalistic assignment, trying to help a Brazilian women find her father (story link below) and to do job interviews at language schools seeking English teachers. Aware that I was running out... of time, and knowing that I could not go all the way to Manaus and not see the river, I dashed down before dark to the waterfront. It's not particularly scenic, but there's something soothing and soulful about this gentle mass of water that still has more than 1300km to go before it reaches the ocean. Next to it, mankind is nothing; it will live long after we've frittered life away on this planet. The river here is actually the Rio Negro, which which a little further east (to the left in the picture) joins the Rio Solimoes to form the Amazon. 11.01.2022 No. 9 in our 10-part series of fond photographic memories. This is the bedroom we'd like to do our social isolation in! It's one of the villas at Las Ventanas Al Paraiso luxury resort in Los Cabos, Mexico ; the 529 sq m (5700 sq ft) One Bedroom Signature Villa With Wellness Room. When we inspected it in 2018 as part of a travel writers' familiarisation trip, we were told it cost more than US$10,000 per night - alas we could only afford three minutes inside . However, it l...ooks like prices have dropped in 2020 - the hotel's website is listing it for a bargain US$5600 on a Friday night in mid-June. Quick, flash your plastic! TTW didn't sleep here but we were treated to a fabulous dinner, and we were very, very comfortable in the two hotels where we stayed. Los Cabos is awesome. bit.ly/TTW-Best-of-2018 . . 11.01.2022 Day 3 of posting pics that meant something to us on our travels. This one is the view from the hilly back garden of Bantry House, and beyond it Bantry Bay. Why is it meaningful? Well, my Irish grandmother liked the song "Bantry Bay" - particularly the version by John McCormack - so I was always curious about it, and when I learned that there was this stunning house in the vicinity, that made the urge to visit even greater. Plus my favourite novelist, two times Booker Prize wi...nner J.G Farrell, spent the last years of his life in the vicinity. Sadly, he died too early, swept out to sea by a wave while fishing from a rock in Bantry Bay. Farrell's 1970 novel Troubles (winner of the Lost Man Booker Prize) was set in a once magnificent but rapidly dilapidating hotel called The Majestic, and when you stroll through the grounds and rooms of Bantry House (which I stress is in a magnificent state) you get some sense of what The Majestic must have been like in its heyday. Spend a long weekend here and read the book!. Written by Bernard O'Shea Bantry House and Garden Visit Ireland's Atlantic Coast Tourism Ireland W

11.01.2022 Day 2 of our 10-day travel photo challenge (see Day 1 below): This pic is from Sibiu, Romania, where a temporary stage had been set up in the main square. I passed through while a Romanian folkloric troupe were rehearsing in their plain clothes: 'must be a national holiday or something tomorrow, I thought'. But lo and behold, the next day the square was awash with colour - dancers from all over Romania, Europe and further afield had arrived for an international dance fe...stival. By far the most striking were the Mexicans (pictured). It was funny watching them walk through the packed square, looking like colourful satellite dishes bobbing on a sea of heads. The festival lasted three days, then the city turned to black: goths and bikies in leather pouring in for a weekend of heavy metal . It was a memorable week in Sibiu Go Visit Bundala National park . 06.01.2022 Greetings, here's pic 8 in our series of tantalising (we hope) travel pics that mean a lot to us. Where's this place? It's all explained at http://bit.ly/BomJesus-TTW but here's a clue . Why does it mean a lot? Because we were there this time last year and had a great time! P.S. We took the funicular.
