25.01.2022 In August, we camped at Wivenhoe Dam, Qld. Camping is permitted at either the Captain Logan or Lumley Hill camp areas. Both areas have flushable toilets and hot showers, drinking water is provided, mixture of powered and unpowered sites and fires are permitted in fire pits (BYO). There are some picnic areas within the camping grounds that are perfect for watching the sunset whilst enjoying a beverage or two. Recently powered watercraft were permitted to access Lake Wivenhoe D...am however there is a strict 6 knot maximum speed limited everywhere. Previously only sail boats and electric motors were allowed. Activities including fishing (permit required), boating (may need permit depending on size), catching yabbies (red claw), there is a small playground and gas BBQs in the day use area and some basic snack items including ice can be purchased from the kiosk / site manager office. We spent a couple of hours having a look at the dam wall viewing area which was a 5 10 minute drive from the camping area. There are some other day use areas near the dam wall that have large play areas, toilets and BBQ’s. Various bird species will visit throughout the day and the kangaroos don’t mind coming up close if you are quiet. A bandicoot decided to pop open our plastic tucker box during the night. Evidently Bandicoots don’t mind Jatz biscuits! See more

23.01.2022 Situated near Emmaville in northern NSW, Ben Falls Retreat is located on a 3000ac rural property. The Severn river flows through the property providing a natural habitat for Murray Cod and Yellow Belly. The property owners have created a standalone dam which is stocked with Bass. A 4WD vehicle is a must to travel through the property and those staying on the property have the choice between two different cabins each with their own perks. We stayed at the cod cabin which was f...ull of character. Lures that had fallen to the powerful surface strike of the cod were left to show future visitors and photos of prize catches lined the walls. An indoor wood heater kept us warm during the evenings, and the cabin was complete with gas cooking facilities, sink, flushing toilet, gas hot water shower, solar lights and backup petrol generator. We chose to do most of our evening camp oven cooking outside using the outdoor fire pit with an abundance of hardwood provided. Rainwater was provided however we had brought sufficient drinking water with us. A 50m walk straight out from the cabin takes you to the closest fishing location from there you can walk the river or drive to a separate location to explorer. An abundance of wildlife including fish, birds, kangaroos, deer, goats, goannas as well as livestock can be seen. Our group of four stayed for three nights and managed ten cod ranging in size up to about 75cm’s all caught using large surface poppers or spinner baits. Phone reception was patchy but a short drive to a high spot on the property proved successful to check in back home. A great destination for the avid explorer where all you need to bring is clothes, food and fishing gear. http://www.bensfallsretreat.com See more

20.01.2022 Big Riggen camp grounds are located about 10 minutes south west of Rathdowney, Qld. The grounds are suitable for tents right through to caravans with some powered sites available. There is a small kiosk which supplies some handy items that you may have forgot. Amenities include flush-able toilets, $1 coin operated hot showers, rubbish and a designated toilet dump point. There is rain water available however it is suggested that you boil before use or BYO fresh water. Wood fir...es are allowed with some fire pits available, BYO wood or you can purchase from the kiosk. Activities include a small bike track, wide open grassy areas and dirt roads for riding and playing sports, exploring of creek and bushland areas, kayaking, fishing (fresh water) bird watching and evening visits from possums! The small bike track proved popular with our kids and we chose to setup about 40 meters away. The grounds had not long recovered from the aftermath flooding of Cyclone Debbie so fresh water muscles were scattered throughout and some interesting items found whilst exploring the wooded areas beside the river! There are no designated sites as such just choose something suitable for your needs. There are two toilet blocks with flushable toilets however no shower facilities.
