25.01.2022 It might look a little scary, but this creature is a scientific find worth celebrating! In collaboration with Murdoch University's Harry Butler Institute, DBCA ...scientists recently completed a study at the Kent Street Weir fishway and found a Pouched Lamprey - the first one seen in the Swan Canning river system since the 1970s. Lampreys are an ancient jawless and boneless fish with an evolutionary history that pre-dates dinosaurs! They have a suctorial disk lined with tiny teeth and feed by latching onto fish and rasping away at their flesh or sucking their blood. Upgrades at the Kent Street Weir have allowed fish and other aquatic animals to pass through the fishway year round and access habitat in the Lower Canning River. Pouched Lamprey migrate to freshwater to spawn, and prior to the fishway being installed the Weir would have been a barrier to the species migration. In WA, this species is often found in the south west between Margaret River and Denmark. Given this is the first sighting in the Swan Canning river system in around 50 years, it's a very exciting find. Scientists observed and filmed this healthy Pouched Lamprey before sending it back on its way into the river. Check the comments to watch the video! 24.01.2022 The 2020/21 West Coast Zone (WCZ) abalone fishing sessions are scheduled between 7.00am and 8.00am on: Saturday 12 December 2020 Saturday 9 January 2021 S...aturday 23 January 2021 Saturday 6 February 2021 Saturday 20 February 2021 The total allowable WCZ recreational catch has been increased to between 28 and 32 tonnes, following stock recovery after the 2010/11 marine heatwave. We would like to thank all recreational abalone fishers for contributing to this recovery. An extra fishing hour has been added in the WCZ so abalone fishers will have another chance to get out and fish on Saturday 23 January. Adding an additional hour is consistent with our Harvest Strategy. Anyone wishing to fish for abalone must have a current abalone fishing licence. If your licence expired since the last abalone fishing day you will have to purchase a new licence to legally fish for abalone. Licences are valid for 12 months from the date of issue. You can check the rules in the Abalone recreational fishing guide http://www.fish.wa.gov.au//licences/rec_licence_abalone.pdf or the online fishing rules website: http://www.rules.fish.wa.gov.au
23.01.2022 It's happening again
23.01.2022 This is still going on 3 Years after we first raised this issue
23.01.2022 Just as I have been saying since I first became involved with them, in fact, from the first meeting.,,, Timmy's bullshit filter was on point that day, indeedy!
21.01.2022 Knowing crew from both boats I am excited AF!!!!
21.01.2022 The Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) has coordinated a rescue approximately 150km off the coast off Exmouth One person reported they were abandoning ...their yacht into a life raft at around 9:30am this morning. A Perth Challenger jet and a rescue helicopter from Karratha responded, and a nearby cargo ship diverted to the area. The person was recovered from the water by the rescue helicopter shortly before 1pm. AMSA thanks all those involved in the rescue efforts.
20.01.2022 COVID, and the con job about the Outer Harbour! G’day folks, It has been a while since I last wrote a piece on the Outer Harbour, and this is one that has been ...boiling away in my mind for the past few months, so here it is, but first, for those that came in late.. There is a push by this State government to build an expensive and unnecessary new Outer Harbour in Kwinana, to replace Fremantle as a working Port. Sounds good right? Lots of employment and no risk to the environment? Yeah right! Insert sarcasm here. The Port will be fully automated, and the loss of jobs from Fremantle will be great. The flow on effects will decimate the already on edge small business’ that service the area and surrounding suburbs also. What about construction I hear you ask? Well we will get the crumbs, as a certain country will bring in its own labour force (as we have already seen at other resource projects), so short answer is, no, not many. This new Port is planned to be under the modern Silk Road, One Belt One Road Project, and attached to this article is a picture of failed and disgraced former Labor candidate Colleen Yates showing a slide proving that it is. So what about the environment, isn’t the Sound already dead? Not at all. Because we don’t have any large rivers here in lower WA to provide nutrients and other inputs into the ocean, the Sound is actually the major nursery and spawning ground for many species of fish, Birds, Marine Mammals, crabs, squid, King George whiting etc, etc, the list goes on. In fact its reach extends way beyond the Metro area, and covers an area from about Kalbarri in the North, to Albany and Esperance to the South and East respectively. That’s a pretty large area indeed. Now the major risk to the area is further loss of seagrass and the benthic micro habitat that it supports. For those interested in Carbon sequestration, it is over 10x more efficient per hectare than a hectare of woodland at capturing and storing CO2. Impressive eh? Without the Seagrass beds the Sound will die and we will lose all of the benefits that it brings. The snapper will not be able to spawn successfully, the Penguins will starve when the baitfish leave, the Kwinana Shelf Dolphins will not be able to adapt to the loss of habitat and will be at greater risk of predation. The list goes on. So why can’t Seagrass be regrown after dredging? The planned dredging depth for the new port is to be between 18 and 22.5m, that is below the depth that Seagrass can grow successfully, as it needs better light penetration for photosynthesis. So the short answer is, no, it can’t regrow there. Plus the silt plume from the dredging will cover and smother any remaining Seagrass outside the dredging area, as I have written about before in other articles. This same dredging will also release Decades of heavy metals, TBT, Mercury and other contaminants bonded in the bottom layers. Remember that the Sound takes about 45 days to flush due to reduced currents because of the Garden Island Causeway restricting the flow. The Fish Army long ago partnered with Ozfish to reseed the Sound with the Seeds for snapper program, in which we harvest the Sea Bananas (seed pods) and give them to the Scientists to do their magic with, after which we drop them in suitable areas to attach to the bottom and form new meadows. Doing this we hope to return the Sound to a healthier body of water and it is no different to replanting vegetation in cleared areas on land. Which brings me to the world of quid pro quo, which I first called WA Inc 2.0 back in February 2018, quite fitting really as it was the 30th anniversary on WA Inc later that Year, and also the PICL site involved was the same spot they now always wanted for the new Outer Harbour. Once again we have the big end of town lobbying for this, but even more worrying in light of recent revelations, a foreign Communist Government deeply involved that hasn’t exactly covered itself in glory lately either, maybe something else far smellier, but not glory, it appears that Panda Pooh does stick to its fur, lol. Our former Federal Trade Minister, Andrew Robb, the same fella that sold Darwin Port to the Chinese then went to work for the Company that bought it, bare weeks after resigning from Parliament, now he openly works for 1B1R, spruiking One Belt, One Road. We also have billionaires, multi-millionaires, Property Developers and Professors planning developments in closed meetings with Government Ministers. History does repeat itself you if don’t learn from it, and each one of us with a WA Drivers Licence is still paying a levy for that debacle back in 1988! So what is the linkage to COVID then? The latest report from the Westport Taskforce, was due out in late March, and they used the opportunity presented by the media attention on the virus to officially not release it. Note I said not officially. I had seen a draft copy back around then (one of those random things I find under my door lol) that had changed all 5 options to Kwinana, with none recommending that Fremantle be maintained as a working port. Now we find out that the last and final report is due in September with no official public comment allowed on this issue. This should outrage anyone with an interest in the Sound to stand up and make some noise. Whilst our Premier is being rightly lauded for his stance on closing our borders, we should all also remember that it was public pressure that brought him to that decision and his new found conviction. Public pressure can also swing his mind around to our point of view, after all an election is coming up.. Now don’t think that I am a fan of the Liberals either, as I think that they are just as bad in this case, probably even more so, as their leader owns a couple of Tackle Stores, yet has never attended one rally nor offered anything beyond words, dating all the way back to the snapper kill of 2015 in fact. I along with many of you value deeds over words any day, especially with pollies of any persuasion. This is why we have allied ourselves with any other affected party, regardless of political affiliations and or leanings, and some staunch allies they are indeed. We have business groups and Unions sitting at the same table, all united in our opposition to this project and the risks to the environment, local jobs, logistical cost increases (higher prices at shops), more roads being cleared, increased emissions due to increased distance between hubs etc. You get where we are coming from here and how serious this is? Also don’t try and hang the racist tag on the Fish Army as we have many members of Chinese Ethnicity amongst us, and we all share the same views. This isn’t an anti-Chinese people’s post, but an anti CCP 1B1R, and Outer Harbour post. We don’t want it. It isn’t needed for many Decades yet, if at all, as technology such as 3D printing will change freight in much the same revolutionary way that containerisation did. Fremantle Port is by far the most efficient Port in Australia and can already handle the biggest ships that service our waters, to a capacity increase able to service a City the size of Greater Sydney, over twice our current population. We are primarily a destination, not a hub. We need job creation projects, not job killing ones. Add work, don’t remove it via automation. What jobs will be left for our kids? Less workers means a smaller tax base, which means higher taxes. The lobbyists also wanted a Special Economic Zone exempt from our industrial and environmental laws and are also pushing for it to be customs and duty free as well. Open borders anyone? The extra land needed to be cleared for new roads to service the Outer Harbour will destroy much needed Carnaby, Quenda, Echidna habitat also. Important Aboriginal Cultural and burial sites will be under threat. The environment can’t support it, the EPA was quite clear about that back in 2006. 18 environmental Red Flags is a pretty big fence to clamber over, and they ended up giving the environment just a 10% weighting in order to give it a tick. I haven’t even touched on the National Security implications of it being located adjacent to where our warships and submarines are serviced, and also staring across the Sound straight at our major Naval Base where they operate from. The Sound needs us...and we need the Sound! Will you help us to save it, and stop this unneeded and environmentally, industrially and economically reckless project? I hope that I have given you some food for thought, and that you will join our fight, and help spread the word? I suspect that this post will be taken down pretty quick so please keep sharing it to keep it in circulation? Cut and paste it to your own profile if you can, they can’t stop it spreading that way. As always, Fights on! RSM #saveoursound #itsnotneeded #saveourport

17.01.2022 Humpback Whales in Kakadu?! Yep! Three! Parks Australia has issued the following statement: Earlier this week we became aware of a very unusual event at K...akadu National Park - three Humpback Whales had entered the East Alligator River. As far as were aware, this is the first time this has happened. Kakadu National Park staff are monitoring the situation and working with NT government authorities to gather data on this unusual event, an expert working group has been set up to monitor the whale and prepare plans for intervention if required. As of Thursday, it appears that only one whale remained in the river. We have put an exclusion zone in place from the mouth of the East Alligator River to a point approximately 30kms upstream (see map) for the welfare of the whale and for the safety of people who may have been considering going to the area by boat. The last thing we want is a collision between a boat and whale in waters where crocodiles are prevalent and visibility underwater is zero. We also dont want boats to inadvertently force the whale further up the river. The whale is not in distress at the moment and it is not an emergency situation. The best case scenario is for the whale to make its way back out to sea. Kakadu National Park and NT Government scientists will continue to monitor the whale in the coming days. We appreciate that this is a very unusual and exciting event, however, our priority at present is to ensure the safety and wellbeing of visitors and the whale.
17.01.2022 As I have always said it isn't needed, and the destruction will by far outweigh any gains. The loss of jobs from the automated port will also affect the Fremantle area greatly, and for many Years to come. Our snapper, crabs and squid stocks will also suffer along with all the other species that use the Sound for a nursery ground.... The local Dolphins (Kwinana Shelf Pod) and the Little Penguins that also forage throughout the Sound will also suffer. The EPA rejected the Outer Harbour back on 2007 as carrying too high an environmental risk, nothing has changed since! Four Years of fighting will come to a head this election. Use your vote wisely, especially in the Upper House. Fish Army will ask each of the parties where they stand in time for the election, so that you can make an informed decision. Tim
16.01.2022 Stoked to see this. Ian and I have caught some great billfish between us, including my PB sail.

14.01.2022 STINKY CARCASS ON LANCELIN BEACH This monstrous carcass, about the size of a small car, has washed up on the beach in Lancelin and boy does it stink! It's in fr...ont of the VMR building at the south end of the bay and is without a head or tail. Locals are guessing it's a former whale and it would be wise to stay out of the water around the carcass as it could well attract sharks. Never a dull moment in Lancelin. 10.01.2022 I was the major speaker at that rally back in 2015. Sneakers there invited himself to OUR rally via a press conference, without even a courtesy call! He then rocked up 20 minutes late and dared to tell me that we were at the wrong jetty!!! ... The wrong Fckng jetty! In fact he had held a press conference not 150m from the exact spot only a few days before. I did question him on this ,and did ask if he thought that I was "FCKNG STUPID?!" After all he is only the local member and probably had regular coffees at the place across from the Jetty? AND being Timmy, I also pointed that fact out too....... lol! I have never seen anyone squirm that much before, and from that moment I have held him in utter contempt!!! Perth Fishing TV also has him on film promising to protect the Sound, at that same rally as opposition Leader https://www.facebook.com/SaveFreoPort/posts/189934979503062?__cft__[0]=AZW7XlUYXfe1K4C8yMNlBhbTPNLajUH0qzGbe92r9intBS4mDSfO783OnRKIkpOClu2Is6sHXFYX4RzJjotQKJjCazxXwD2aY-bXs6StxkfgFa9aOfzzObng11_AV4L7IL-ImC1qIkNLwfmKxJtrt9FSWxZXphDiMK7Qw9BwuxODdg&__tn__=%2CO%2CP-R

04.01.2022 When boating, danger can come from different directions, so maintaining a proper lookout is crucial to boating safely. Statistically it is estimated that about ...one in every 2000 to 3000 waves (three to four times a day) will be approximately twice the height of the total wave height. Therefore, when you are on the water always maintain a lookout for anything that can present danger, including large waves. See more
04.01.2022 Are you getting ready for the opening of the blue swimmer crabbing season in the Swan and Canning Rivers on 1 December? Before you head out to catch a feed, it ...is timely to remind crab fishers to remove the head, guts (mustard) and gills from crabs caught in these rivers before freezing, cooking or eating. This is a general caution because toxic algal bloom events of Alexandrium have been detected in these rivers at elevated levels in recent years and could become an annual occurrence. It is important to take note of new caution signage along the rivers and be aware of health warnings about Alexandrium, an alga which can produce a type of Paralytic Shellfish Toxin which bioaccumulates in crustacea and mussels. Consumption of affected crabs may be dangerous, and in extreme cases can be fatal. For a step by step guide on how to properly clean your blue swimmer crabs, visit http://fish.wa.gov.au/alerts. Watch the video, download the flyer or read the FAQs, so you can be prepared for a clean feed of blue swimmers this season. Please also know your crabbing rules, including bag and size limits.
04.01.2022 EDWARDS ISLAND VEHICLE ACCESS VOTE ON TUESDAY Some weeks ago the shire asked for public responses to their plan to outlaw vehicles on the beach at the Edwards I...sland Point. Remember, vehicles have been allowed on that section of the beach since they were invented. That aside, the shire announced the plans to discontinue that practice and asked you to comment. If you go to page 33 below, you'll see the shire received 113 different written responses. 101 of the individual responses were against the closure of the beach, 12 were in favour although it should be noted that a number of people copied one of 3 responses supporting it's closure and submitted that. The end result is a whopping majority in favour of keeping the beach open, 71+%!. And the responders weren't just locals. Indeed many of those who took the time to write were visitors to the town, visitors who bring in money, who support the local businesses, who go back and tell others, they market Lancelin to their friends and at no cost to Lancelin! They are VERY IMPORTANT PEOPLE. Come Tuesday the councillors, armed with that information will vote on the matter. There is great concern in Lancelin that the councillors will simply ignore the public's wishes and toe the shire line. We will know if that's the case on Tuesday evening. And if they do side with the shire as opposed to mirroring the public's wishes, there will be no more (legal) driving on that part of our coast. See the list of responses on page 33 - https://www.gingin.wa.gov.au//agenda-ordinary-meeting-of-c

02.01.2022 Shark depredation is an issue generating a lot of discussion amongst WA fishers. We understand your concerns and are working on shark depredation and the effect... it has on both commercial and recreational fishing. This year, our scientists have embarked on a RFIF funded project to research how depredation could be mitigated in WA. The first step was to survey charter and boat recreational fishers about their experiences. Results indicated that one in two fishers who fished north of Lancelin had experienced shark depredation and two in three had tried to reduce or avoid shark bite-offs in various ways. One in 10 fishers tried using electronic or magnetic shark deterrents, while the main method was to avoid bite-offs by changing fishing location. The survey highlighted common concerns - the loss of a large number of fish, and the perceived impact on the sustainability of fishing in regions where depredation was highest. Phase two of the project commenced in July, with field testing of three shark deterrent devices at various popular fishing locations from the Abrolhos to the Montebellos.
02.01.2022 GRANT'S FISHY TAILS #8 - THE SHARK THAT NEEDED A REST I have recounted the story of catching and tagging large Tiger Sharks at Heron Island, especially in well-...named Shark Bay. On this occasion, I had tagged a 13-foot 5-inch (4.1m) female Tiger (his largest); eased her off the shoreline, and walked her out into maybe hip-deep water over the reef-flat. Like all her predecessors, she was quite docile, and offered not a shred of danger to me. (Remember, I count myself as a professional coward!) So, I returned to my little research station to catch up with a scientist's inevitable paperwork. Then, I realised that the day's low tide would be exceptionally so; and wondered whether my Tiger Shark might be stranded on the 600m-wide reef flat. So again: I pulled on my always-wet reef-walking gear, and went out to where he released her. And walked out into knee-deep water, searching - at random - for a stranded shark. And I almost fell into a steep-sided pool, about 6m across and 2m deep. We used to call these "fairy pools" out towards the reef edge, when they were colonised by superb living corals. This one? - desolate. But - lying motionless on the sandy bottom, there was my Tiger Shark. This shook me with despair; for I knew that these big sharks were bound to swim, or else they suffocated. I kicked loose a chunk of dead coral rock and tossed it in, landing gently on the Tiger's back. And it came truly, amazingly alive - off the bottom and circling the pool, travelling at maybe a slow walking pace, around and again. I was utterly engrossed to watch her for maybe 10 minutes; then I left her in the knowledge she was unexpectedly safe. Eight days later, I captured her again on precisely the same line in Shark Bay. Clearly, she was unaffected by her earlier trauma of capture, tagging ashore, and release. This is one of the incalculable advantages of being a wet-footed marine biologist: you can learn something new each day.
01.01.2022 Not good at all, here's hoping for the best???
01.01.2022 Westport doesnt want you to see this chart of the environmental red flags for each port proposal. It would be a shame if this was shared everywhere Cockburn... Sound has 17 environmental red flags. Bunbury has 11. Fremantle has zero. None. Save Cockburn Sound and Keep the Port in Freo.
