Drivers and pedestrians are able to assist in protecting ourselves and those around us.... The Road Safety Commission of WA has released the following as things to keep in mind while out and about on WA roads. Accompany Children around roads - Younger children are at higher risk due to their lack of experience and undeveloped skills to cross roads safely. Keep an eye out for adults over 60 - The older adult demographic are also high risk pedestrians due to deteriorating eyesight, hearing and mobility. All of which, make it harder to judge the distance and speed of the traffic. Avoid roads while drinking / Watch for disorientated pedestrians while driving in nightlife areas - Like motorists, a pedestrians awareness and judgement is impaired after driving and reflexes are not as quick. 10.01.2022 It's Road Safety Week We all know that headlights aid us to see our way in the dark. But did you know that your headlights can improve your safety on the road? If your vehicle isn't fitted with daytime driving lights, your headlights can provide similar attributes. The Road Safety Commission notes that during a recent WA study, drivers with daytime driving lights were 8 times safer than vehicles without them. Some of the benefits of using your headlights appropriately in...clude: Assist your vehicle to be more visible on the roads. Especially in overcast/rainy weather, if you're vehicle is a dark colour that may blend with the road and on windy roads. Aid in another road user to estimate your distance from them, especially when overtaking vehicles. As a driver, you also need to be aware that you are using your vehicle lights correctly. Here are a couple light related items that the Road Safety Commission notes: Use of HighBeam lights are not permitted: if you're driving less than 200m behind a vehicle if an oncoming vehicle is less than 200m or has its headlights dipped. Fog lights can be used in foggy conditions, dust storms or heavy rain. Fog and headlights should not be used at the same time. In foggy conditions: Drive slowly Turn on windscreen wipers Don't use high beam lights. Each year approximately 1200 people are killed in a vehicle-related accident and another 44,000 are injured. Last year the Wheatbelt alone had 151 people who were killed or seriously injured. ... Between 2015 - 2019, 809 people were killed or seriously injured. That's an average of 161 people a year. 66% of those were male. 21% of those were aged 20-29 years old. 46% of those were caused by hitting an object that wasn't an animal. 80% of those were on roads with a speed limit of 110km/h. 7% of those were caused by occupants not wearing a seatbelt. In 2018, there were 29 road deaths caused by inattention with 95% of Australians admitting to knowing the risk of distraction but only 48% saying they never use their phone while driving. Make the pledge now to keep yourself, your loved one's and others safe while driving. ... The Road Safety Commission suggests the following as ways to avoid distractions while driving: Turn off your mobile phone when driving. Adjust all vehicle controls before setting off. Turn off your MP3 player when driving. Take a break rather than eat, drink, smoke or groom yourself while driving. Check a map before starting the journey to know what lies ahead. Ask passengers to be quiet if you are having difficulty concentrating while driving. Ensure pets are properly restrained in the vehicle.
